Can you have experiences like this on a console?

DayZ, mod for Arma 2 on the PC, is now closing in on 1 million players. Currently at 835,000. It produces the kind of experiences and excitement you simply cannot find in any console game. Whereas there is practically nothing in any console game experience that cannot be found on the PC, only bigger, smoother and more beautiful.

Where PC gaming leads, console gaming will eventually follow of course. For example, Minecraft eventually came to the Xbox360, albeit in a much more limited version. However the PC always seems to be at least two steps ahead, right now it appears to be several steps ahead because of how feeble the current console hardware is.

I've had a lot of fun recently with DayZ, it provides you with amazing experiences. The first time I killed another player in this game, I was literally shaking with the adrenalin. I've played competitive FPS multiplayer games for years at a very high level and have never experienced anything even remotely like it. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Here are some examples of some of the experiences you can have in DayZ currently;

- Thisis an experience seen from two different points of view. A group had been rounding new players up on the coast using a bus to take them to a "refugee" camp and become part of their crew. This first video is the point of view of one of the people they rounded up. To clarify, you spawn with no weapon in DayZ. So must of these guys they pick up are unarmed. You can voice chat with other players nearby in any DayZ server by just holding down capslock, that is how they communicate.

- 2 guys spot 2 sniper bandits on a building and decide to sneak up on them.

- One unarmed guy stalks a group of bandits to their base camp, manages to avoid detection and then calls reinforcements in. Freaks them out by playing scary "I can see you" messages via in game voicechat.

My point is, this is why I like to game on the PC as opposed to consoles, not just because of the superior graphics, the huge library of exceptional games and superior version of every multiplat. It's because the PC is always at the cutting edge. Consoles are fine for sports games on your couch and stuff like that, but the PC is where all the new and exciting things happen in gaming.

I don't know and I'm pretty sure I don't care.

PC has unique games, consoles have unique games, anyone could enjoy both.

I've played it a few times now and I dunno, it seems like finding a weapon and stuff is pretty hard, considering zombies are always around buildings. Usually I die within 5 minutes because I try looking in a house for weapons :(

There is a steep learning curve. I was lucky to start playing it very early, first 20,000 players, when you spawned with a pistol. So I learnt everything then. I know the coastal area pretty much without having to look at a map. I know where buildings are etc. Nowadays when I spawn I can get fairly high level gear, AK or M16 etc, and get out of the coastal area within about 20 minutes. Try playing it with friends or with someone who knows what they are doing if you are struggling. Or even better, finding someone to befriend on the server. First time I played this game I made friends with 8 different people and we went around learning the game and protecting one another.

There is a big difference between console game experiences being potentially viable on PCs (which is as you pointed out is almost always possible) and those experiences actually being available on the PC << More often than not, the games I want to play on my consoles aren't released on the PC at all.Articuno76

Every platform has its exclusives. What I am addressing here are the unique nature of the experiences. Infamous was only released on the PS3, so that experience you can only get on the PS3. However there are a lot of 3rd person action games with relatively similar features available on every platform. The same goes for any console exclusive. The only exception being something like the Journey to some extent. You can play those type of games on any platform. They might have a different protagonist, a different story and different interesting choices. The format however remains largely the same. On the PC you have all of that but the new cutting edge experiences of emergent gameplay that you do not get elsewhere. For example DayZ and to a lesser extent games like minecraft/EVE etc etc. I don't like EVE myself for instance, but I cannot deny the unique experiences that have emerged from its gameplay.

In short, any experience on a console can be found on the PC, just with a different hat on. The same cannot be said of the reverse.
