SOMA

It offered an experience unlike any other game, even for someone who is not a big fan of horror games, or games where you do a lot of walking, but I was just sucked in by SOMA.

Storywise, gameplay wise, audio design, setting, ... it nails all the things I like in video games.

SW gonna SW.

Man, even if you hate the combat which admittedly was the weakest part, blazing a fatty and wandering around taking in the game world should have still been good for some entertainment.

Hmm I would probably place BotW slightly above Witcher 3 but not sure... They are both incredible though. I actually have a Witcher themed wallet (and as a Dutch person my wallet is like my sidearm so it means something).

Wow really? I'm very bad with horror games and I wanted to try it on my Vive XD But so far I've been too scared to even try the opening. I played through the opening without VR up till the point that you meet Mr. Alien. The environments looked beautiful, faithful to the Alien movies. I should set up my Vive again, in case I get a brave moment.

This.

Literally the only thing that could ever come close to it is an official Streets of Rage 4, because Mania is the game I've been wanting for over 20 years.

It does to some extent if you play it using a keyboard/mouse instead of a controller. And better graphics and framerate NEVER hurts. That said, I played HZD on PS4, but prefer most RPGs on the PC.

Our framerate goes to 60+... Yours is 30 so its basically double better fun.

lol "double better fun"...

fyi, I'm currently playing Nioh at 720p/60fps on PS4. Tried the 1080p/30fps option before. I, myself, prefer better framerate over visuals but it isnt the critical disparity that hermits claim it is...

And games like Nioh actually benefit from better framerate cause it has faster combat... TW3 combat though, as much as I love the game, is rather mediocre. 30fps or 60fps in a game like TW3 is really not much that big of a deal

Relax man I was using humour to calm you down. What people prefer or do shouldn't bother you much. Its objectively a better experience on better hardware... Its simple as, the game is the same though so if you don't mind 30FPS its all good.

I will have to separate my personal GOTG and the game that actually in my opinion defined the generation.

My personal GOTG would be Persona 5. I was shocked by how amazing the game is. Its graphical stylization, the sheer amount of gaming time it takes to finish it while not being boring for a second, the best story twist in gaming history, how all the characters come to life. It was the game I personally enjoyed the most.

Overall though the game that defined this generation and will be remembered in years to come is clearly The Witcher 3. It is a pinnacle in most aspects of what gaming should be. Excellent graphics, beautiful open world, remarkably well written story and dialogues even for the tiniest sidequest, etc. Compared with previous generation, which was all about cinematic corridor shooters, Witcher 3 kicked off this gen with a loud "thud" and turned it into festival of openworld games. Some games came close, some even beated it in some aspects (like Horizon: Zero Dawn), but Witcher 3 will forever be the landmark.

Best game overall ... ? Witcher 3 easily. It had it all. From graphics to soundtrack to massive open world to great and memorable characters and story to great quest system to length to voice acting to .. you name it. Easily the best overall game this gen, we like it or not. It had it all.

I have had a real hard time to get past a few hours of this game. I feel as if I mastered the combat fairly quickly and it was rinse and repeat on everything. Have my shield up. Put in a couple of slashes. Jump back and let the enemy throw some hits while I jump back and repeat.

I’ll have to play the Witcher 3 I guess. But I honestly feel like it won’t resonate with me. Can’t say overrated based on me not having played it, but I usually hate things that others love unless I experience them first myself.

It’s almost like the expectation of greatness sours me on the experience.

@Vatusus: Do you own a gaming PC? It's much more enjoyable to play at 60/120 frames than 30.

Low FOV/low framerate actually makes your eyes tired and for some people including me nauseated after hour long playing sessions.

Divinity Original Sin 2

The amount of TLC put into that game.... DOS2 has it all: Awesome soundtrack, extremely deep gameplay, rewarding exploration, the freedom to do whatever you want, great voice acting, fun narrative, cool characters. It's a damn masterpiece.

Honorable Mentions:

  • XCOM2 War of the Chosen
  • The Witcher 3
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Hollow Knight
  • Prey
  • Dark Souls 3
  • Bloodborne
  • Nioh
  • DOOM
  • Cities Skylines
  • Stardew Valley
  • Kerbal Space Program

Early Access Honorable Mentions:

  • Factorio - Plenty of content, I put in over 100 hours. It's so much fun and even more so on a private server with friends. I don't care if they every fully release it, they keep adding more stuff.
  • CrossCode - I can't can't wait for this to come out in early 2018, check it out if you haven't heard of it.
  • RimWorld - Great sci-fi colony sim similar to Dwarf Fortress but on the lighter side and with actual graphics. Still extremely deep gameplay that can suck you in and leave you wanting just 5 more minutes......

No, I've a good enough laptop that lets me play the games I want on PC. As I've stated I played Nioh on both framerates. Yes, it's better, but it's definitely NOT the game changer PC elitists like to say it is. From the comments of these PC gamers one would expect TW3 on PC was like a complete different game then the console counterparts... wich is not. Some games dont really benefit much of higher framerate and W3 is one of those. Why? Because its combat is mediocre, at best. Framerate is a game changer on actual games with fast and/or precise mechanics like Bayonetta, or Nioh, or DMC, or Dark Souls.

When people talk about why TW3 is so good what are the first things they mention? Story, world building, characters... how exactly does 60fps "overwhelmingly" benefit those? It doesnt.

At least on TW3 case, 60fps is better but it isnt a game changer by any means

@Vatusus: It depends on the genre. It's brilliant for first person shooters and action games.

I'm usually more lenient on frame-rates for open world games like The Witcher 3, as you mentioned.

@sHaDyCuBe321: The Witcher 3 is great for all the reasons people mention such as graphics, story-telling, voice acting and every side quests feeling freshly written and performed. It's not the best playing experience, and generally you won't see people mentioning that about the game so it depends on what you're after. If you're looking for good side quest and mainline stories with romance, comedy, action and folklore, it's worth a go.

Between indies and AAAs, i have already played literally hundreds of great games this generation. This gen has been insane (and probably the best) when it comes to quantity AND quality!

My favourite is still The Witcher 3, which is also one of the best games i have ever played.

You can get mods on PC that completely revamp much of the game.

https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/2521

This is just one blurb from the changes.

"Probably the biggest change in the mod, the way these work has been changed completely too. There are absolutely no things in the game that are leveled anymore. Not the equipment, not the quests, not the enemies and not even Geralt.

You can explore anywhere and take on anything at the beginning of the game with the potential to be successful in your endeavors instead of being completely barred from content.

Geralt's progression happens organically through gameplay by using his innate abilities, like performing fast and heavy attacks, blocking, countering, creating alchemical items, casting signs, etc. These all increase the skill progression of their respective paths, granting you talent points for use ONLY in that path. If you brew many potions, you will be good at brewing potions. Makes sense."

Most people will not mod the game, but they can change it quite drastically.

HMmm tough call, I'll just list my personal top 3

Cities Skylines
Factorio
Kerbal Space Program

PC, of course.

I think if I was being objective, factoring in quality more than preference, I'd have to say The Witcher 3; very few games deliver such quality in such a huge amount. The side quests, the game world, the characters and story....all huge, all more detailed and rich than any other game for years.

@DragonfireXZ95: It's the Breath of the Wild mod. ;)

Seriously though, mods are taken for granted and are great for many PC open world games like Bethesda RPGs and The Witcher 3. In fact, like you said, you can nearly redesign complete aspects of a game to make a fresher and different experience, which in itself creates an incentive to replay games with different systems and design paradigms.

The big reason I knew I was going to love The Witcher 3 is because I played the first one way back in 2007 and absolutely loved it. Then 2 came, and I loved that, and the rest is history.

@jumpaction: Yes, mods are huge. They can completely 180 a game in some cases, or make games from the past playable if they aren't on newer systems. Dark Souls 1, for instance, had a severe problem where players on console and PC both had to put up with sub 30 FPS and 720p resolution, but a simple day 1 mod that someone created allowed PC users to experience 1080p+ and 60 FPS almost right out of the gate.

@DragonfireXZ95: It makes sense too. Players know what they want out of the games they play. Given the means, they will implement them. :)

While The Witcher 3's combat and lack of game-feel may not be repaired by frame-rates, theoretically that could be fixed with mods.

To be honest, I liked Fallout 4 better than The Witcher 3. Building and managing the settlements plus the economy that binds them together certainly helped. That gave enough of an edge to Fallout 4 so that I was able to finish it.

In contrast, by the time I got to the part of TW3 where I was supposed to recruit allies for a big fight that's coming up, I was getting a feeling of sameness that just sapped any motivation to keep going.

Obviously, my tastes played a major part. I like first-person perspective and modern weaponry. I like modern surroundings or at least, the remains of modern surroundings. I like being able to utilize 3D space which means being able to go up very high and then interact with the objects below. The latter shows in other games such as Far Cry 4 and GTA V. No surprise I love them too.

Someday, my tastes might change and I'll get the urge to finish TW3. I felt the same way before with Bioshock. It took three tries before I warmed up to Bioshock. Same goes for STALKER. I disliked it a few years ago. Now? I can't get enough of it. ;)

@Vatusus: Ok, so you haven't played TW3 at 60 FPS and are talking out your ass. If I'm playing on DM difficulty I want the fastest reaction time possible and I couldn't imagine parrying multiple attacks at 30FPS in many situations, not to mention the input lag. It's not DS, but regardless it's not an easy game at high difficulties and low levels. The combat lacks depth, not difficulty unless you spam quen all the time. But that's lame.

Also it goes without saying that graphics are one of the biggest highlights of the game, and TW3 on ultra/pc is probably the King of the Graphics Hill next to the newer DICE games. PC and console TW3 look worlds apart.

Also. Mods. TW3 is like Bethesda games. On PC and console they could barely be considered the same game sometimes.

Jesus, arent you dense... I already TOLD you I played a game, Nioh, that actually benefits from higher fps count, on both framerates (because its combat is, ya kno... actually good contrary to TW3) and still didnt think it was that much of a game changer. What part of that didnt you understand?

Remasters often present more polygons, better visuals, technical performance, better framerate, etc, etc, etc then their older counterparts but its not because of that that they are considered different games, or is it? So now tell me why is TW3 PC a different game then the PS4/X1 versions?

I played SotC on PS2 back in 2005 and several years later played the better version with actual stable framerate on PS3... was it a better experience technicaly speaking? Yes. Was it a different or even better overall experience? No, not really

So dont come and tell me I would have a completely different experience if I had played TW3 at 1440/120fps, cause I'm pretty sure I wouldnt

The first thoughts that come to my mind are The Witcher 3 and Zelda botw. Botw had too many glaring flaws that hold it back from being as great as it could have been. Still it's hard for me to choose.
