Are You Ready For 4 New Consoles in 2013?

After a long several year cycle, the seventh generation of consoles is starting to come to an end. Just on the horizon there are several new gaming consoles by new and old gaming companies alike. 2013 looks to be a very promising year for gamers.

1. Steam Box

   Im sure youve heard by now that Valve, the makers of the Half-Life and Portal series, are planning on making a gaming console of their own.
   
   
   Valve took their first step towards the Steam Box with the introduction of The Big Picture earlier this year. It allows gamers to play their Steam games on a TV.
   
   Valve already has a patent for a video game controller that has a similar layout to the Xbox 360s controller. One cool feature of Valves potential controller is that you can move some of the buttons around to fit your play style.

   This is sure to be an interesting console, especially because its coming from a PC developer.
   

2. OUYA

   Another new console developer coming to the market next year is the OUYA system. It has a unique feature in which all the games will be free-to-try and all will be downloadable. It was well overfunded in its Kickstarter campaign, which had an original goal of $950,000 and ended up getting $8.5 million.
   
   
   The system also has a similar controller layout to that of the PS3 and the Xbox 360. The system is on track, with developer units already shipped out, for its April 2013 release.
   

3. PS4

   This is one of the big systems coming to the market. With the success of the Playstation systems its no doubt that this system will be highly supported with games and franchises you know and love.
   
   
   Developer kits for the system have already gone out, and there have been lots of talk and analysis about the Xbox 720 and the PS4 releasing soon over at Kotaku, which gives good hope for a 2013 release.
   

4. Xbox 720

   The Xbox 720 or the Xbox Durango is the other big player to the console market. Developed by software and hardware powerhouse Microsoft, its no wonder that it will be a highly polished and highly backed system. With a lot of franchises under its belt and the success of the Xbox 360, its also sure to have a large following of gamers.

   Although it has not been officially announced by Microsoft there have been several clues to its inevitable release. Microsoft has said that the Xbox 360 is designed to have a 10 year life cycle, but because of the failure of their most recent product, Windows 8, release of the Xbox 720 could be pushed up to as early as 2013.

Ouya is trash, and not even in the same league. It runs Android and promotes hacking. It'll be filled of flashgames and the same ol shovelwares that's on Android.

ill stick to my normal 3 big boys , ----nintendo sony microsoft but i say nintendo wins the gen because they have the right mindset-eg take time deliever cheap but playable system with awsome games ill get one next yr one the following yr im not buying 2 in one year like last gen

Because it will be a closed system, in a console-like packaging, designed to be plugged into a TV and played with a handheld controller.

I am quite curious as to what kind of games it will be playing. Will they need to be specially developed, as if for a new console? Or will it just play PC games? And if that's the case, how it is going to cope with being a closed system, and likely having very limited (if any) potential for hardware upgrades?

I already got four PCs with Steam, I'm not getting a Steambox as I know it today.

Not interested in option Two at all.

That leaves the predictable PS4/720 which I will buy on launch day like I've done with their earlier consoles.

ouya is pointless anyone can make a android pc. Steam box at this point is just a rebranded pc, console gamers wont buy it and hermits will build there own.

Exactly. That's why I'm kind of interested in it. I just want to know what they're actually going to do. If they try to just make a small PC that is "easily hooked up to a TV", I think it'll be a colossal failure, because PCs already do that. Any PC built in the last several years can hook up to a TV with no more effort than a console.

Probably. Looking at your sig, your system is identical to my roommate's new tower we just built, except he has a 3570k, which is at 3.4 ghz (haven't tried OCing yet). He crushes pretty much all games with it. although he's already talking about wanting another 560 to SLI.

1: 720 and ps4 will come 2013-early 2014. sony needs to release right there not a year later.

I'll get a 720 and that's probably it. I'm not surper hyped for the next console gen but when the next gen comes out, I'll buy one.

I don't buy systems at launch and there are still many games from this gen I want to play,they will tide me over till I get a PS4 after its been out a while.

Ouya won't do anything spectacular, it likely won't do much at all. 720 will be the first out with PS4 coming the year after I imagine and steambox, well I dunno about that.

Steambox looks interesting, but I doubt it comes out next year. PS4 might never exist. Ouya? :lol: 720? Not interested.

I'm getting a Wii U next year, and I'll get a PS4 when it comes out in 2014.

I might get a 720 somewhere down the road as well.

I want to them to come out out so that multiplats on PC will start getting more graphically intensive but I won't buy a new gen console for another 2-3 years. Hell, if things keep going the way they have been going for me the past few months, I simply won't have time for games at all.

Meh. Ouya and Steam Box have no appeal to me. And the way Sony and MS are going Im skipping them next gen. Possible rumored reasons: no BC, blocking of used games, and with dev costs skyrocketing again with stronger hardware I wouldnt be surprised if PS4/720 games released at 79$. If people think the mountains of DLC is bad now, it is going to get even worse later.

The Steambox is going to be an interesting challenger. It is quite a bit different from the normal console, but is still trying to imitate it in many ways.

How is the steam box different from a normal console? Does it go along with a PC or is it a system of it's own?
