U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials

A resolution to encourage breast-feeding was expected to be approved quickly and easily by the hundreds of government delegates who gathered this spring in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly.

Based on decades of research, the resolution says that mother’s milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes.

Then the United States delegation, embracing the interests of infant formula manufacturers, upended the deliberations.

American officials sought to water down the resolution by removing language that called on governments to “protect, promote and support breast-feeding” and another passage that called on policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that many experts say can have deleterious effects on young children.

When that failed, they turned to threats, according to diplomats and government officials who took part in the discussions. Ecuador, which had planned to introduce the measure, was the first to find itself in the cross hairs.

The Americans were blunt: If Ecuador refused to drop the resolution, Washington would unleash punishing trade measures and withdraw crucial military aid. The Ecuadorean government quickly acquiesced.

And not a single part of that sentence was sarcasm.

In the end, the Americans’ efforts were mostly unsuccessful. It was the Russians who ultimately stepped in to introduce the measure — and the Americans did not threaten them.

When even Russia has the moral high ground you know you are doing something wrong. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised, the American government is basically run by corporations. This particular thing has nestle written all over it.

At this point the world should just give up on the US. Maybe call them back in a few years, go out for a drink. Who knows.

The world should give up on America because some random tabloid newspaper in a slow news day reported the US did not want certain words in a resolution that has no meaning what so ever.

lol ok

But i do agree the left should just give up.

Yep, we agree 100% there

If Europe can rely on their own strength against the Russians and Chinese, it´s so much better for the world and world peace.

We're not, you just hear about the 0.05% of people that actually are triggered by the sight or idea of a woman breastfeeding in public. I'd say it's rare enough, but also common enough, to be counted as some sort of social disorder. Lactophobia? Mammarania?

"OH MY GOD THAT WOMAN IS BREASTFEEDING! NUDITY = PORN!"

I don't know nor have I ever encountered any fellow American that thinks that way. Hell, my sister is breastfeeding her kid, she did it in the middle of a restaurant the other day and nobody did so much as bat an eyelash.

I mean, not that it happens, but there's nothing to stop a mother from breast feeding anywhere. It has never been an issue that I know of, but I know law pretty much says they can do it wherever and whenever they want. I mean, hypothetically, imagine if you went to a movie, and person right next to you started doing that, be kind of distracting, sure, but is it worth striking down this resolution in such a heavy handed manner, threatening another country's military aid?

@lamprey263: You wouldn't believe the amounts of doctors paid by Nestle that tell the mother what kind of formula she must buy for her newborn baby without even asking her if she's considering breastfeeding. There's no medical consideration, it's not about whether the woman can breastfeed or not. It's all about that big fat check from Nestle. THAT is the real issue. It is happening around the world right now.

It would be distracting mostly because I'd spend the whole movie worried the baby was going to throw a fit and ruin the movie for me :p

Well since you're not American I don't think you know what you're talking about. Hospitals encourage breast feeding and hire staff to help new mother's learn how to do it properly. Stick to what you know. Which is not America, Americans, nor our politics.

I have an 11 month old and my wife is breastfeeding

Formula is garbage and should only be used as a last resort. Breastfeeding confers immunity. Formula fed infants end up small and sickly. They have a much higher risk of childhood cancer because their immune systems don't develop properly. Breastfed babies have superior brain development. They end up being significantly more intelligent than formula fed babies.

I get it. Some women can't breastfeed for various reasons. But not breastfeeding when you are capable of it is practically child abuse. You are setting your kid up for failure.

Oh and poop from breastfed babies doesn't really smell like much of anything. Poop from formula fed babies stinks. Yet another reason to breastfeed.

Agreed. Never understood why those that can don't, then wonder why my 9 month old looks like a two year old, and their 12 month year old is struggling to be double their birth weight.

Weight increase is different yes. However those two cases are just anecdotal. They make as much sense as comparing the kids to one of my neighbours. Their second kid probably gained weight twice as fast as the first one.

Well, your case is clearly not a sign of the normal average.

https://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-true-that-breastfed-babies-grow-more-slowly-than-formu_8829.bc

On average, breastfed babies weigh less at age 1 than formula-fed babies. However, by the time they're 2, the gap closes and breastfed and formula-fed babies weigh about the same.

On average, breastfed babies weigh less at age 1 than formula-fed babies. However, by the time they're 2, the gap closes and breastfed and formula-fed babies weigh about the same.

You know, I think that is more so a case for white babies, than it is for black babies. Every time I've heard it that has been from a white parents who are surprised my kids are breast fed and their size. A comment from a black parent is always, "Oh, you can tell that's a breast fed baby."

Also, I do know my case is different, my children were always going to be big as I'm 6'10" 250 lbs. and my wife is 5'9".

Well, your case is clearly not a sign of the normal average.

Ahh, ya I guess there is a difference between black and white babies, and also it matters who provided the genes :) considering you are 6:10 and 5:9 for your wife is bigger than some men.

Your offspring are bound to be a lot bigger than someone who is 5'6 and 160

I have an 11 month old and my wife is breastfeeding

Formula is garbage and should only be used as a last resort. Breastfeeding confers immunity. Formula fed infants end up small and sickly. They have a much higher risk of childhood cancer because their immune systems don't develop properly. Breastfed babies have superior brain development. They end up being significantly more intelligent than formula fed babies.

I get it. Some women can't breastfeed for various reasons. But not breastfeeding when you are capable of it is practically child abuse. You are setting your kid up for failure.

Agreed. Never understood why those that can don't, then wonder why my 9 month old looks like a two year old, and their 12 month year old is struggling to be double their birth weight.

Well, your case is clearly not a sign of the normal average.
