Ok, so I had to be one of the first to post this on Gamespot.  This article is intersting as far as a dvd format goes, but it means little at the moment for PS3 owners to be worried about.  It's kind of like when everyone got a boost of confidence when the porn industry was supposed to support blu-ray.  Before anyone gets up in arms and starts the great fanboy discussion... it's still several months off before anything like this will happen.  DON'T GET YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD PEOPLE!  Your (and my own) PS3 is still safe and secure for a couple more years.

This is a waste of Wal-Mart's time and money.  The HD-DVD players are already cheaper then blu-ray players but blu-ray is winning.  Plus those HD-DVD players will probably be made so cheap that they'll break constantly (maybe even worse than a     X360)

Latest online numbers show that HD-DVD sales have spiked above BluRay again... They say its due to the fact that lots of PS3 owners bought a BluRay movie to try out on their the new PS3 and the sales have dropped off a bit.

I checked out the HD and blu-ray sections of several walmart stores around where I live. A few months ago there was an equal number of movies on both formats. Now, there is 3 times as many blu-ray movies as HD-DVD ones so it seems as if HD-DVD is almost extinct already so its puzzling as to why Wal-mart would embark on such a deal. I guess there are still companies out there desperately trying to turn the tables but I doubt it will work.

Actually, the translation was fuzzy and if you actually check it out it's hard to tell wether they are blu-ray or HD-DVD drives. Plus, I could of swore that it was 299 not 199... Anyways, why would walmart want to sell so many HD-DVD players?

actually that's because hddvd owners gathered together and brought hddvd's at once to make a spike.

For example

The HD DVD players are selling better than Blu Ray players and if you think everyone that buys a console for movie playback then you are wrong. People need to get off their Chocobo because either format is not selling well. Most people are sticking with DVD.

yeah just saw your EDIT the moment after i posted that! that's kind of funny a mass buy like that! well i may be neutral in the console war. the format war on the other hand, Blu-Ray really is the better choice.

It was from ONLINE sales like I said.. based off amazon.com sales. HD-DVDs spiked above Bluray, this was after the news about the 9:2 sales (which is a very odd way of measuring.. its like 4.5:1 basically :P) The link RahKayne provided sheds some light on the subject.. dont have any other links at the moment.

BTW people don't buy PS3's for BD player, however if you buy a PS3 you get a bd player and I'm sure that does help out in urging the customer to buy a bd movie

From the beginning post and the title is says Blu-Ray done!?! ,  it was just a ploy to get people coming.  Bluray isn't done cause of a hddvd spike.  that's what I'm proving.  the spike is temporary.

The people reporting this news has just declined their statements, stating that it was blu-ray players and not hd-dvd players that they sold for 200 $. This might mean that a huge price drop for ps3 might occur, and that ps3's will cost 400.

Well noone knows that the surge in BluRay sales isn't temporary due to new owners of a PS3.. this argument can go in a constant loop. Its not worth going back and forth over. I said good info you posted... why are trying to argue?

That's freakin' funny, but I don't believe it is going to help HD-DVD that much.  Especially since Sony owns a big portion of the movie studios and Blu-Ray really is a superior technology over HD-DVD.  To be honest I haven't bought one Blu-Ray because it's hard to buy a movie for $30 when I can get it for $15-20.  I believe "Casino Royal" will probably be the first Blu-Ray I buy.

The people reporting this news has just declined their statements, stating that it was blu-ray players and not hd-dvd players that they sold for 200 $. This might mean that a huge price drop for ps3 might occur, and that ps3's will cost 400.

Last I heard about that was that they arent totally sure if they meant BluRay or HD-DVD but HD-DVD was specifically said in the article. The confusion came when they said blue laser.. which is also used in HD-DVD players. BTW.. your link doesnt work for me.

[QUOTE="Cellien"][QUOTE="d14m23"]This is a waste of Wal-Mart's time and money. The HD-DVD players are already cheaper then blu-ray players but blu-ray is winning. Plus those HD-DVD players will probably be made so cheap that they'll break constantly (maybe even worse than a X360)Cellien

Latest online numbers show that HD-DVD sales have spiked above BluRay again... They say its due to the fact that lots of PS3 owners bought a BluRay movie to try out on their the new PS3 and the sales have dropped off a bit.

actually that's because hddvd owners gathered together and brought hddvd's at once to make a spike.

oh yeah?

i provided a link of an example

or you could do a google search to find out more

Even if that accusation is true (the link is a theory based on a forum).. sales are sales.

that's why I said an example, I'm not gonna spend the time to "prove it in court", but I just provided and example and/or possibly the reason why you heard of hddvd doing better than BD. Where did you get your info from?

BTW people don't buy PS3's for BD player, however if you buy a PS3 you get a bd player and I'm sure that does help out in urging the customer to buy a bd movie

I dont have a link, got an email update from a HD digest email update. Your link pretty much states what I was saying anyhow.. whether it was an organized mass buy or not... Still HD-DVD ended up getting up above BluRay sales. I understand you were just showing an example :) Good info.

you said:

They say its due to the fact that lots of PS3 owners bought a BluRay movie to try out on their the new PS3 and the sales have dropped off a bit.

therefore I was just proving the same thing

that spike in hddvd sales is really nothing, it'll go back down to where it was. It's just a media strategy. Imagine if PS3 and BD fans did the same?

From the beginning post and the title is says Blu-Ray done!?! , it was just a ploy to get people coming. Bluray isn't done cause of a hddvd spike. that's what I'm proving. the spike is temporary.

Well noone knows that the surge in BluRay sales isn't temporary due to new owners of a PS3.. this argument can go in a constant loop. Its not worth going back and forth over. I said good info you posted... why are trying to argue?

sorry I'm not trying to argue, but i'm trying to say that the BD sales and that hddvd spike are infact different

meaning I would have to disagree with you on that BD sales are temporary.

They are gradually going up, because PS3 owners are buying bddvds,  but that hddvd thing is just a SPIKE not a gradual increase over a long period of time.  Of course people can argue that, so whatever have a good night.

After looking up TDK all I can find is Blu-Ray recordable media and no Hd-dvd stuff at all.  So more than likely it will be a Blu-Ray player since TDK is helping make it.  Not saying it couldn't be a HD-dvd player but it seems TDK would go with Blu-Ray since they are already supporting it.

it says:

--- Sorry for the previous News but we were lost in the transaltion , We had to read Blu-Ray HD DVD... an in Chinese it is 藍光 = blue ray ---

So it can't be more obvious that HD-DVD is the loser but not BD

It's unlikely blu-ray will fall to hd-dvd, as last time I saw, blu-ray was outselling hd-dvd 9:2, and by technical aspects, the blu-ray is dominant, as well as in terms of studio support.  Both Disney and Fox are exclusive to blu-ray, and seeing as the output of these two is so large, it seems the market is decided for the most part already on which format will be allowed to stay alive longest.

The reason HD-DVD spiked was because of an organized effort, on AVS forums, to buy HD-DVDs on April 15, the format's birthday. This "buy-a-thon" was planned about a month in advance and had no kind of spontaneity whatsoever. If you look on amazon.com, HD-DVD sales did spike, but they sharply declined and about 3 days later, Blu-ray was the leader again in every category. This HD-DVD spike will be somewhat insignificant at the end of the month when the total sales numbers come in... Blu-ray continues to slaughter HD-DVD.

Besides, HD discs are still very much a niche, right now; DVD is still the format of choice. It will really start to matter when HD media gains mass acceptance which most likely won't be for several years...I'm guessing 2010 or later

Im not acually concerned in the slightest about this - $199 for a stand-alone HD-DVD going on sale march next year ...

March next year -- i think you'll find Blu-ray will be priced competivly then ... expect PS3 to no longer be the cheapest BD player ... Also expect Universal to be netural by then ...

I believe it is still in Blu-ray's favor 9:2

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/9316.cfm

Where are you getting your info?

9:2?  WTF?  Why are people still using those numbers?!  The 9:2 ratio was for one freaking week!  One week!  And that 1 week was over a month ago!

God damn people..
