I'm thinking of building a budget gaming PC. This would be my first time. Only thing I've ever done was replace RAM he :P So I saw a build somewhere on here (not PC Hardware forums, but Gamespot) so I'm stealing parts from there :P

So here it is:

AMD Athlon X4 640

Sapphire 6850 and Biostar 790X Mobo

Corsair (Build Series CX600) 600w PSU and WD 320gb HDD

2GB DDR3 RAMHP DVD BurnerThat leaves me without a case or OS but this so far costs about 400 bucks. I'm looking to spend 500-ish bucks and another hundred or so on a monitor. So is that the best I can do? Should I replace anything for a cheaper alternative? Also what case should I get? Although I think Windows 7 would cost me around 100 bucks by itself.

Cooler Master makes some pretty good budget cases, look around the $40-60 range and free shipping for some deals if at all possible. Yes Windows 7 usually costs around $100, but if you are a college student or know a college student most schools offer large discounts for operating systems or software like Windows 7.

You could build a beast for £800. Mine was just over £500 (for the parts, more when you consider Windows 7 and a new monitor) and can max out most games really smoothly. Check my sig or my blog for the details.

Hey, ionusX practically built my rig, only thing left for him to do was come to my house and build it :P

Do you have a HDD, pop one on it shouldn't be too much. Maybe get a network card if you want wireless.

Motherboard already has sound.

A bit nerve-wracking sometimes I have to admit. You just never know if it will power on because one of those components came DOA. I've been lucky, 3/3 builds and counting. Lucky me!

Very lucky indeed. I've had faulty RAM and PSU (twice). Luck of the draw I guess. The RMA process isn't as daunting as I thought it would be.

I have a question about fans.

My case has 2 in the front

2 on top

1 at the back

1 at the side (In the window)

Do they all have to be attached to the motherboard? OR can I just plug them in using the PSU cable?

Can I 'piggyback' them? i.e have a few in a line?

Also on the motherboard the fan pins have names, CPU_FAN/SYS_FAN1/SYS_FAN2/PWR_FAN

I know what the CPU_FAN is, but do the others relate to other specific fans and there placement?

Thanks

If you have enough fan headers (which is doubtful) on your motherboard then it's better to plug them there otherwise they'll be at full speed if you plug them directly to the PSU. If you're not bothered with noise then that's fine. I don't think placement matters too much. I have 3 or 4 fans connected to a molex cable from my PSU, so yeah you can have a few in a line.

You can check the way I did my cables if you're confused:http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac57/gedz89/PC/IMG_2061.jpg

The molex cables are at the top and bottom right hand corners

Thank goodness for websites like Newegg.com that make the RMA process a breeze! Tigerdirect.com is pretty good too, but not as customer friendly I guess.

It was also good that ebuyer covered cost to send a courier to pick everything up. I didn't now they did this, so as a consumer I think it is important to research a company to see what they're policy is like.

On a side note, I forgot to mention this guide made me want to do my first build :D

If anyone has a code, could they PM it to me? Posting it just lets the first guy that comes along to use. I need to send it to my buddy, which could take several hours before he's able to actually use it..... Thanks to anyone that might be able to help me out....

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP for making this thread, it was a huge help while I was building my computer and answered nearly every question I had. Took me a little over an hour to get everything installed and running, I doubt I could have done that if I didn't have this to help.

I've been looking into building my very own computer for the first time, can the PC as shown in this forum play The Witcher 1 and 2, Crysis 1 and 2, Shogun 2: Total War, Starcraft 2, and the Warhammer series? I've never been into PC gaming and I know little to nothing about it. Would the PC with all the parts he has shown here also be likely to play The Old Republic whenever it comes out?

The parts in this guide are a couple years old already and I doubt most are even being sold anymore. Your best bet is to make a new thread in the main Hardware forum with a budget and ask people the same question.

It was only 3 weeks. Yeah I'm sure it's fun if you have the time, but it looks like it takes very much time.

Took me about 2 weeks of reading stuff on the internet and lurking forums to get up enough confidence to do it. Actual construction time was 3 hours, 1 hour of which was formating the hard drive and installing drivers for Windows XP. Now that I'm more experienced I can have a machine together and turned on in 45 minutes.

Didn't take me much time at all. I put up a thread on here asking for help to pick out parts, read through this guide twice on my own, and just checked out a few threads talking about the advantages of certain CPU's and GPU's.

Took me about a week to decide on my build and then once I got everything at my place it took me around an hour and a half to get it built and running with all the drivers installed and updated.

This isn't nearly as complicated as many think and the hardest part is picking your parts out because there are so many options. The actual building and everything is rather easy and nearly impossible to mess up.

Unfortunately that GPU was low end when it was released in 2005 so I don't believe it would be worth it to even get it working. Something like these budget cards (1, 2) would be infinitely better IMO. Quite honestly though that rig looks like its been on its last legs for years now. If you want to seriously get into PC gaming I highly recommend saving up $550-$700 and starting over with all new parts.

Looks fine to me as far as parts go, but don't forget you'll need an operating system for ~$100.

Don't unpack a part until you are ready to install it, don't build in an area with carpet, periodically touch an unpainted part of your case to discharge any static build up, and don't touch the pins or any other bare metal connectors on things like your RAM and GPU.

Got a question about picking out MOBOs for a build.

How do you determine which one is better than another? Other than what CPU socket and RAM channels and PCI slots it can hold, what can you use to determine which one is better than another? I don't understand what all the P67, G55 and all that other number/letter stuff means lol.

First and foremost a mobo is determined by your budget. A higher budget lends itself to a more expensive CPU (Intel usually) and therefore an Intel socket mobo. Lower budget tends to be AMD's arena. Then you look at features such as: SLI or Crossfire capabilities (normally mobos have one or the other, sometimes neither and rarely both). Then things like onboard video (if you don't plan on buying a seperate graphics card), overclock capabilities, and RAM speeds. Another important aspect is the brand, because its hardly a dispute that some manufacturers are better than others when it comes to mobos (Gigabyte, Asus, MSi, EVGA, etc.)

Thanks for the very best, complete and easy to follow, directions I have ever seen for doing a computer build. I wish I had seen this before I did my first build. I can't get my new build to do anything but give me a green light on the motherboard. I am going to use these pictures and directions to do a complete tear down and re-build. I hope that works, otherwise I might start screaming. Every part is brand new including the case.

I can't get my new build to do anything but give me a green light on the motherboard. I am going to use these pictures and directions to do a complete tear down and re-build. I hope that works, otherwise I might start screaming. Every part is brand new including the case. Sheriff120

Assuming you didn't forget to plug something in or into the wrong spot (which is typically not easy to do) you might have a DOA part. It happens so don't beat yourself over the head trying to make it work if it still wont post rebuild, one of your parts could be bad.

So these are the parts I will be using to build my computer:

CPU

Motherboard

Memory

Hard Drive

Video Card

Computer Case

Power Supply

DVD Burner

Monitor

Any objections?

So have you investigated using a solid state drive just for your OS? And then maybe use that HDD for other stuff? They're still relatively expensive, but they're about half the price of what they were a year ago. And I think they've come a long ways in reliability. Also, I've only used Antec Signature power supplies in the past. Is Coolermaster reliable for PSUs? Last thing, AMD CPU and Radeon GPU? Is this just personal preference or do you actually get more for your money with those? As opposed to buying Intel and Nvidia. I'm going to be in the market for a new build soon, so I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.
