Everything looks like it should be compatible. But a few suggestions I would have are: -If you're trying to make a budget build, AMD will almost certainly be a better route to take than Intel, as Intel is usually more expensive for their performance -I tend to not trust cases with packed in power supplies, its almost hard to imagine how cheap the quality of either the case or the psu will be if you divide the total price you're paying for the bundle in half. -If you're making a budget build, you might want to consider something from Ati's 48** series. I'm not sure how available they are in Iceland, but I know here they still offer really good performance for their price, especially the 4850.

I know I should probably make a seperate thread for this, but to be honest I feel better asking you. It's probably stupid question too so I apologize:

I can't find the XFX Radeon HD 4850 or 512MBAMD Athlon 64 X@ 5200 Brisbane 2.7GHz anywhere, I'm going to assume either they either sell out really fast or have been discontinued. What would be a good substitue for them?

That exact version of the XFX 4850 isn't being sold anymore as far as I know, but you can find a similar model here. I don't believe the Athlon 5200 is being sold anymore, but if you're lucky you might be able to find left over stock somewhere.

All you need is a PCI or USB wireless adapter. This is the one I use.

These are the items I put together from newegg, please let me know if they will all work together. I would really appreciate some advice on what I should change, I started with a smaller budget but I kinda let it go. Can you tell me how much of a performance difference there is between the gtx 460 768MB and gtx 460 1gb? Is the extra $30 worth it?

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB

A couple things: 1) The performance difference between the 768MB and 1GB GTX 460 is mostly determined by the resolution you plan on running. At higher resolutions (> 1680x1050) the 1GB version would probably a worthy investment. If your monitor is less than 1680x1050, then the 768MB will be fine. 2) The DVD drive you picked out is an older style IDE drive. That means it uses the old big ribbon to plug into the motherboard instead of the now standard sata cables. Try filtering the results on newegg by SATA interface. 3) I'm a little hesitant to recommend Asus AM3 boards right now, because the last one I had to work with wouldn't post regularly unless I manually set the RAM timings. If you are a beginner this might be a little over your head, so you might try a Gigabyte board instead, since they also tend to have better labeled front panel connections. Other than those observations the types of parts you picked out should work well together and it will end up to be a solid rig.

Great looking guide, not sure if it'll work in practice but I'll trust it whenever I start building my own computer. (after my current stock machine goes out that is)

Been working on putting together my first computer, going on 4 hours. I got up to the part of hooking up my gpu and motherboard to the psu. All the other cables weren't so obvious for me. I know I have two case fans, my hdd, and dvd drive to hook up to my psu, and then I have to do some sata connections. I'm gonna go to sleep and continue tomorrow.

Thanks so much for putting together this step by step guide. This was my first time building a computer, following this guide and with your additional support I was finally able to get it all running. Can't thank you enough and all the others here who helped out along the way!

Phenomenal guide, thank you very much for all the effort into writing up all the steps. I'm planning to upgrade my CPU but I never did it before other then video card and memory swaps and I was little intimidated not to do it incorrectly or damage the CPU.

Thanks again, I'll do some video research as well. ;)

so if I were to upgrade the gpu used in this guide (the same kind, but with 1GB instead of 512MB) and upgrade the RAM to either 4 or 8 GB, and use the other components used in this guide, would it max out current games out as well as stay in good performance for at least a few years to come? Thanks

More than likely, but unfortunately that particular CPU isn't sold any more and AMD's cheapest option is now Socket AM3. You will pretty much need to replace nearly every item in the example build because the parts have been replaced by newer models and aren't sold anymore.

so I'm missing an OS and CPU thus far

and I think the HDD does not include a SATA cable, but I found a $15 coupon for the specific model, so I figured it will be worthwhile.

thanks. hope I didn't fudge it up too much....:(

So far everything looks good, that motherboard is a bit expensive if you aren't planning on running two video cards you can probably get a cheaper option and not miss out on anything. (Also you will need to get an ATi card if you plan on keeping that motherboard and running two graphics cards in the future.) For the CPU you can pretty much pick anything in this list that fits in your budget, just remember that any CPU pictured without a box will not come with a heat-sink. You will also need a graphics card. I recommend the following in this order from least expensive to most expensive (pick whichever fits in your budget, but remember that the graphics card is the most important part of the build for gaming, so you might want to adjust your budget accordingly if you are close to getting a better model): Radeon 5750 Radeon 5770 Nvidia GTX 460 Radeon 5850 Radeon 5870 Nvidia GTX 480 -I couldn't see your selected power supply, so I can't comment on it. -SATA cables are included with the motherboard.

I made a thread a little while ago asking for advice on the build I had picked out, and I didn't want to make another since I made some changes so I decided to post here. But first, this will be my first time building a computer from scratch, and this guide has helped, so thanks for posting this. Now, what is your opinion on the parts I have picked out?

Looks great, though IIRC you could probably get the i7 920 for a bit cheaper and not see a noticable difference or you will be able to overclock slightly to make up the difference. Also I assume you have a case picked out?

They would be even cheaper now, the problem would be finding them, as almost none of them are sold at retail anymore.

Hmm.. I suppose in the next month as I save up for this stuff I could look around. Wouldn't Newegg be a great spot to find all of them, though? I don't know much about the site, but you'd think they'd have older products too

Newegg is a great place to buy from, but unfortunately it too has phased out nearly all of those parts, you can find similar parts, but IIRC they only sell OEM versions of AM2 cpu's now, so the cost of buying a heatsink seperate will negate any savings. Which means you will probably have to go the AM3 route, which usually means a slightly more expensive motherboard and DDR3 RAM.

well, I built my rig. and I really didn't have too many problems. the processor was such a breeze too, I was relieved , except the heatsink mounting was a pain in the ass.

have Windows 7 ready to go too. biggest problem I had was getting the 5.25'' plate off for the DVD bay:lol: it was so sad on my part, but my case had such a confusing bezel. it doesn't come off like other cases, so I did plenty of useless net rummaging there.

just need to get some wires organized and tied appropriately and pick out a GPU in the coming months, and I'll be 100% good to go.

so thanks for the guide and advice General X, and thanks to the one poster who helped me with a better mobo alternative in my one thread.

think I learned a lot:)

Everything looks like it'll work great together, I just have a couple concerns. First the quality of that hard drive seems to be a little iffy, and second that case you've picked out is a Full Tower case, which means it is really really big, most people don't need full towers so double check if you have the room for it.

well, I built my rig. and I really didn't have too many problems. the processor was such a breeze too, I was relieved , except the heatsink mounting was a pain in the ass.

have Windows 7 ready to go too. biggest problem I had was getting the 5.25'' plate off for the DVD bay:lol: it was so sad on my part, but my case had such a confusing bezel. it doesn't come off like other cases, so I did plenty of useless net rummaging there.

just need to get some wires organized and tied appropriately and pick out a GPU in the coming months, and I'll be 100% good to go.

so thanks for the guide and advice General X, and thanks to the one poster who helped me with a better mobo alternative in my one thread.

think I learned a lot:)

Alright, since no one's answering my thread, I'm posting here. I'm planning to get the PC set up below for my sister. She doesn't really game, so I decided to go for low-med end build. She plans to mostly for movies/TV, like an HTPC, but she doesn't really need a TV tuner, plus some of the HTPC cases seem very limiting. She is also planning to hook it up to her 32" HD TV, so I may actually be inclined to use it sometimes (lol), though I already have my own PC. I do want some room for upgrade in the future, which I why I put an Phenom II setup, DDR3 and a 550 PSU.

Any suggestions or changes you'd recommend?

The total is $664.20 CAD. With shipping and tax, it's $791.65 CAD. She had a budget of $1K, but I don't think she needed it considering she wants it for basic use, and she can just put more of the money on the the TV (which we will buy separately).

PSU

OS

DVD Drive

GPU

Looks fine to me. One minor thing is I'm sure you can find Windows 7 in a combo deal with one of the parts you picked out, or a similar part to shave off a couple more bucks.

Thanks! I tried looking for a combo with Win 7 - but it was mostly with Mobo's for $15 savings. I tried to reconfigure, but I already have my CPU with the Mobo in combo for a $30 saving, so I think I'm better off. It sucks because I bought Window 7 last year for my own PC and opted for 1 liscence vs. 3. The three liscence was like only $30 more, but I didn't think I needed it.

Anyway, at least it did encourage me to seek out other combo's - I found this OCZ PSU/RAM combo which shaves off about $5. It's basically the same as my previous RAM, so I went with the combo.

I'm happy too that I have 4 mail in rebates now equalling $55. I don't know the reply rate to those, but Sapphire, Asus and OCZ seem reputable enough. Damn you Newegg and your irresistable deals! I just need the final thumbs up from my sister before checking out.

:)

This guide is great. :) I've read it through so many times that I've memorized it, and now I can build easily. :P

The 1 pack gives you a license that can only be used on a single computer at any given time. The 3 pack gives you 3 of these licenses to be used on three seperate computers. (Note: you can install the single pack on a different computer(s) in the future, but you're not allowed to use it on multiple computers simultaneously).
