They aren't as good as today's movies in terms of acting and so on, i agree. Anyone who disagrees is clearly being too sentimental.SolidSnake35
with a statement like that i doubt you have seen more than 2 movies from before the 80s or probably havent watched more than 200 movies in your life time

Hmm.. two Jack Lemmon movies blows your theory out of the water. Days of Wine and Roses, and Glengary Glen Ross. *scratches chin*

yeah i did enjoy the movie but i was seriously annoyed at the lame 1 dimenional characters. especially the guy who wouldnt vote not guilty, just lame plot devices there to get a messgae across, instead of actual real characters.

Yeah....I don't think old movies are terrible. I think you expect too much out of them like some modern day movie or something. That's like sitting down to watch Goldfinger and expecting it to be just like Casino Royale.

Broad, sweeping generalizations about topics made by individuals lacking the depth of experience to fully analyze the topic matter make me laugh.

And TCM is Turner Classic Movies, an American cable channel. I watch it frequently and I do not believe it has ever shown Stallone's F.I.S.T. I wouldn't necessarily consider that a "classic" movie, and I doubt TCM would either.

I suggest you broaden your movie-watching experience and re-evaluate your broad generalization. You might want to try watching actual films that TCM regularly broadcasts, such as:

To Kill a Mockingbird
The Bridge Over the River Kwai
An American in Paris
Singin' in the Rain
The Sound of Music
To Have and Have Not
8 1/2
The Bicycle Thief
The Maltese Falcon
2001: A Space Odyssey
Gigi
Charade
A Nun's Story
The Caine Mutiny

There, that will give you a start.

It's one thing to say that you don't enjoy them but it's another to state that they're "terrible" as if it's a fact. I can understand having opinions and different tastes than others, but I think you're being a bit pompous stating everything as if you have some sort of better judgment than the rest of the world. There are plenty of excellent older movies. It's too bad that you can't enjoy them, but that's your problem.t3hrubikscube

You have a wonderful way with words. Also, I agree entirely.

I wouldn't say they are terrible, and there are still some good older movies, but acting and cinematography was definately held to a lower standard back in the day. Almost every older movie is comically over acted by today's standards.

ur watching the wrong type of movies... fist really? You could have chosen a much better stallone movie....like tango and cash... cliffhanger or rambo 3... and i cant agree wih u at all... maybe if u said anything prior to say.... 1975 i could agree... but 80s and 90s are the best years for film..ever. 2000s suck with their rom coms and cgi focused films... ashton kutcher must be in at least 10 romantic comedies

Everything in this thread is so wrong.

Acting was bad in older movies? Have you heard of Marlon Brando, Chaplin, Keaton, "early" De Niro.

Cinematography bad? Have you seen a good movie from these years?

Bad plot? Oh jeez, I don't even know where to start. 2001, Lawrence of Arabia, M, 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, Nights of Cabiria, The Seventh Seal and on and on.

This is shameful if this is what the general public thinks. Actually I take that back, its utterly despicable.

How is "new" or "old" even a meaningful classification?

It doesn't even make sense to say stuff like "cinematography in old movies sucks" or "acting in new movies sucks", because those movies have absolutely nothing inherently in common. Great movies were made the entire time, and crappy movies were made the entire time. It's not exactly like they're all the freaking same just because they happened to be released during the same decade.

TC's problem seems more like he gave himself a false delusion that movies will be good just because they're old. And that he then started watching a bunch of bad old movies and somehow got the impression that old movies just suck. If that's the case, then that's his fault for indiscriminately watching bad movies.

Don't get me started on that again. I'm all for older movies, and I actually loved THIS movie when I was a kid. But I recently watched it again and it SERIOUSLY pissed me off.

Though this is less an example of "older movies not standing the test of time" and more an issue of "CHILDREN'S movies not standing the test of time".

Wolfetan

you need to put it in context.

We (or at least, I) never said acting and filmmaking was bad back in the day. I never said old movies are bad.

What I did say, however, is that by today's standards, they do not hold up well. Film is an extremely young art, and a lot of the films before the 1960s were pretty much pioneers of filmmaking. They were fortunate enough to get in early and essentially set the standard. THey are respected not just because they were good (for their time), but because they were lucky enough to be good first.

Not everyone (most everyone, actually) is a film buff. We can't watch a movie from Russia made during the 1950's and put or minds in the correct state to appreciate the subtle rebellion against communism the director is making during Stalin's reign. Its not ignorance, its naivety. So when someone says an old movie is boring or they think the black and white film looks too old-fashioned...guess what? They are right.

Movies of the first 2/3 of the 20th century were made for that type of audience. Baby Boomers, people that survived the Great Depression, people that fought in WWII and Korea, and more. And that was fine. But now its time to appreciate current movies as well, and to not hold them to a dated standard, but to hold them to their own standard.

I refuse to compare every vampire movie to Nosferatu, every Western to The Searchers, every romance to Gone With The Wind, and every comedy to The Three Stooges

There are plenty of good ones, and the bad ones are certainly better than the bad films 30 years ago. People who say that old movies are the best are just blinded by nostalgia

Sure they could be blinded by nostalgia, or they could just be serious. Besides, you could also say something similar about the people who think that only newer movies are better, that they are just blinded (and being slightly biased) due to their youth. In 30 years time their kids will be saying how movies then are so much better than movies made today. My dad personally dislikes the majority of movies today because they're to heavily dependent on CGI, he just thinks directors have become lazy and he's right.

So you think Van Damme is not prevalent in the cinema? Go back to the late 80 early 90s and try again. He made some pretty good films that still to this day people learn from and take mental notes from..My movie taste is just fine my friend..Its ok to think MAN movies are movie GOLD. OR so it was in my day. NOw days if you are a guy you have to be all emo, girlie, like chick flicks, and decided if you are team Edward or team Jacob..srs..

My list of movies is just fine...I have zero concerns..The only thing I should be punished for is not including TLOTR trillogy..fantastic movies..
