I've read from multiple sources that oil could possibly reach $130+ a barrel this year, which would have a terrible impact on the world economy. What do you plan to do in such a scenario?

I'm considering getting a good road bike and trying to do a 20 mile commute every day. It's not so much that I can't survive paying $5 per gallon, I just really dislike being at the mercy of any particular market. If it were worth it I'd buy a hybrid or electric vehicle, but it wouldn't make sense given that my car is paid off and has decent gas mileage.

Per gallon, yeah.

Countries in Europe have it worse than us if you do the conversions but it still blows.

Park my Acura TL and carpool with my wife in her Prius. Or, I might just ride my bike to work even though it's ten miles away for the exercise. Or, I'll just eat out less and continue to do things they way I do it now since if it was five dollars I could still afford it.

Aaah cheers.

Well the average here today (Melbourne, Australia) is $1.43 per litre, so I think we're already over the $5 mark.

$1.43 AUD = $1.50 USD (per litre)

There are 3.8 litres per gallon.

$1.50 USD * 3.8 = $5.70.

Sucks for us :(

also I will hope more people do this. I personally don't have the money to buy an electric car. Or any other car right now.

idk, there isn't much i would be able to do about it. the places i need to go aren't close enough for me to bike to and still have time to do stuff or not get drenched in sweat

maybe buy a motorcycle, one that isn't too expensive.

If that happens I might not be able to go on a road trip with friends to Chicago this summer, which has been planned for quite some time.

Nothing, since I plan to buy a bike. I can get a full tank of gas for $20 at the moment and that'll take me a few hundred kms.

I'm thinking of getting a good road bike mainly as just an emergency backup in case things really go crazy 1970s style. It would be pretty rough doing 40 miles round-trip every day but I hear that people do it and get used to it.

Ride down the street on my bike shouting "F*** YEAH!"

In reality: take the bus or carpool because I'd get run over even if I wasn't intentionally trolling drivers.

I don't pay for my own gas, so essentially I wouldn't do anything. However, it's not as if I can just stop buying gas. I'd try to conserve what I can, but I'd do what you always do in changing situations: adjust.

I would not be sad at all. $5 per gallon gives people incentive to buy more fuel efficient cars, which is better for everything in the long run.

I've been struggling with this dilemma for the last few weeks. Since gas is around $4/gallon for premium here, I've had to consider cutting back some expensese.. namely trading-in or selling my 07 350z. I love the car to death, but I don't think I can afford to make my car loan payments, insurance, AND pay $5.00/gallon. I may humble myself, cry a little, and trade it in on a used Civic SI or Miata. If I can save $90-$110/month on the car payment, $30-80/month on my insurance, and get better gas mileage, I will have changed my financial situation for the better. I might actually be able to afford to drive somewhere too.

I'll do what I've been doing which is filling up when I need gas and driving wherever I want to. On the bright side there will be less traffic so I'm cool with it. Traffic already seems a little lighter.

what else can you do? Maybe move closer to work or use public transportation if it's available. You can even invest in a hybrid/electric car. Those are solutions but I'll probably just pay it and cut back on something else, complain and continue with my life.
