What sports do you feel women are the most equal at to men?

Here is my list of Olympic sports I'm personally interested in that I think women do a great job at. Of them all, I think the women are the most equal in Gymnastics, Skateboarding and Tennis. They all play on equal playing fields and the people who care about them sports, they care about who wins. I don't watch a ton of women's volleyball but I've always known women to be better at the sport.

Gymnastics - Probably only sport people unanimously care more about the women than the men

Skateboarding - They don't go as big on same obstacles but people have love and respect for the competitors

Tennis - Billy King/Serena give them a good name and people care just as much about women as men

Volleyball - I rather watch women than men whether indoor or outdoor

Golf - Don't know much but I'm sure LPGA is popular with golfers

Figure skating

are you asking in terms of media attention or skill talent in the particular sport?

i would agree that something like gymnastics and figure skating the women's programs garner much more attention from audiences, but does that mean physically women are at the same level as men?

maybe marathons? i think i remember reading somewhere the there is potential for women's wr progression to surpass men's as women have different physiology to better cope with extreme endurance sports.

In terms of both popularity and ability the women's game is far behind the men's.

The best female tennis players are no match for average men's players.

This was proven with Kaarsten Baasch vs Both Williams sisters, he beat them both with ease while smoking in intervals and generally not taking the contest seroius and being disrespectful. He was ranked 203rd in the world and before the match had played a.full morning of golf and was injured from a.bar fight the previous evening.

Only example I can think of were a woman won was Billie Jean King Beating Bobby Riggs back in 1973.

However it was more likely youth defeating age with Riggs being past 55 and was long time retired at the top level.

King was 29 and in her prime.

There is also a good chance Riggs threw the match to pay off gambling debts by betting agaisnt himself, despite his age he was the favourite.

Do trans women count? Some have broken records in their respected women’s fields, rivaling men...

If so, then any sport.

Woman are good looking, they beat men at that.

I was thinking of all this after Women's SLS Finals. Originally women didn't even compete at X-Games period and women didn't get street skating til 2003, even then, I think they use to make separate street courses and don't even think they even aired them on TV, cause I barely remember them competing in 00's. Even SLS didn't have them at first in 2010, they didn't compete til 2015 and unlike boys who do multiple stops for overall season winner, they were just there for the final stop.

Womens street skating is now an Olympic Sport, and will do every stop at SLS as qualifiers. I think Women's Snowboarding had a similar start and rise, although think Skateboarding has surpassed it. Despite this greatness, women park is a blip on map and women's vert and big air isn't really a thing just like Women on any of the bikes. Compared to other sports like basketball, no one cares who wins WNBA, nor do they compete equally at events, people who watch NBA Finals, don't watch WBNA finals. I love basketball but never seen a WNBA game in over 20 years of its existence, only know of a few players, but I've seen a dozen womens street skate comps and know of most the competitors.

Either way, don't think many cared who won for years, and why should they a lot of events didn't take them serious. This changed several years ago as they got better and got more respect to point people actually cares who wins and they watch their events. They been skating the same stuff this whole decade whether Xgames or SLS and although they aren't getting 9's in SLS they getting 8's and generally good enough to watch. I think like with Tennis and superstars like Serena, Street Skating has girls like Leticia Bufoni who helped put spotlight on womens skateboarding.

Overall, I think Women's Skateboarding should be next to Gymnastics, Volleyball and Figure Skating, maybe people don't care more about the women, but I think they've earned just as much respect and more watchable than nearly any other women's sport.

I believe women can do anything as well as men - that is the correct answer to this thread.

Having women’s sports versions of any sport isn’t equal. If you want equality women will have to compete alongside men in the same events. Imagine if we had separate sporting events for tall and short people just because the short people were disadvantaged and less likely to win? I doubt ‘short’s sport’ would draw as much interest. Same could be said for any area where people have a natural advantage: Blacks and whites could compete separately – imagine the reaction to that! But it is true. Boxing - Your Joking ? How many events do you see on PPV or with full arenas with a woman only card? The odd time a woman's fight is on a big event its towards the start of the event and its a good time for people to go out and get refreshments. In terms of ability men and women are miles apart there would be accidental deaths every week if men and women competed agaisnt each other in boxing.

Rugby - Are you seroius, Woman's Rugby gets virtually no coverage, in short no one cares. In terms od ability use common sense.

Football - same answer as rugby

Truth is there arnt any sports woman outperform men in, and majority of sports the men's game is more popular.

OP, you need to better define your question. Do you mean better in regards to skill or better in regards to preference?

If it's skill, I cannot think of a sport where it wouldn't be lopsided in favor of the men.

@Peasly: The OP wasnt really clear on what he meant, weather he meant sports were women compete at a similar or higher level to men, or sports were the women's game is equally popular.

Your boxing example doesnt suggest womens boxing has any kind of of Following, an event that isn't the Olympics that is only women's boxing wouldn't have any interest for it to be viable in small arenas.

Katie Taylor is unifying all the World titles on Saturday, wouldn't you think every single title being unified would be a main event on its on evening and not one of the first fights of the under card of a men's event ?

In short, women's boxing is pathetic and thats the reason there is little interest in it.

However, if you said women's MMA, thats totally different, there have been big successful events with Rousey headlining her own events before she went to WWE. Woman's MMA was actually getting pretty good numbers on BT sports. Its the only women's sport I can think of that can fill an arena and sell PPV's on its own.

Rugby/Football - getting a very limited amount of coverage, still miles behind the the men's game and in general pretty dismal.

To put it into perspective, the Womens FA cup gets around 45,000 attendance at Wembley, half full were as the men's gets 90,000 and would sell more if the stadium held more. It was only a few years ago they held the Womens final at Loftus Road.

If I'm to interpret this question as in which sport could men and women compete against each other and not have the men completely dominate. This rules out any sport where strength is a major factor. Perhaps the more artistic sports you get at the Olympics, like ice skating or synchronized swimming.

I also don't think it's simply a matter of male physical dominance. Men are more competitive than women on average, so when you're talking about the most elite of all sports people, this tends to skew things significantly in favor of men.

Absolutely. Some, very vocal, people were just dismissing reality. Men generally have more muscle and bone mass. Some women may have similar or more compared to the average man, but they are anomalies. Having trans women compete against women gives the trans women a huge unfair advantage. I'm all for trans people competing, but why not just have them compete against each other?

Anyways, to answer TC, I would have to say any sports that do not involve strength as a major factor. Not that many: darts, racing, esports, cards (poker). I wouldn't say tennis as @thehig1 made that one clear.

Sports like swimming come to mind... women can get very close to men's times in this sport.

E sports and chess: probably another one but males still seem to have the edge here as well.

You'll find this with every sport that requires strength. Stamina, Speed etc.

Looking at Swimming look at the top of the sport, that would be world records.

The 100m freestyle world record for men is 5 seconds faster than the women's.

In longer events the gap is even bigger, men coming in around 1 while minute faster.

Figure Skating and Tennis I would say women are great at. They are also really good at long distance running.

I wager anything that doesn't rely on outright strength is a sport where a woman can be near-equal to a man; I say near-equal because, all things except gender being equal--training, experience, and so on--men and women will rarely be physical equals. Soccer, tennis, a fair amount of track and field events, billiards (if you can call that a sport), curling, gymnastics, and so forth.

That's not to say athletes don't need to be strong in the above sports, just saying you don't need to be very strong, more agile or with great endurance. Men will generally be better golfers because they can drive the green, men will generally be better baseball players because they can hit the ball further, and so forth.

But relative to other sports I think women fare pretty well against men in swimming. I remember hearing something a while back about how in some ways women's bodies are actually better designed than men's for swimming. But obviously their smaller size still means that they can't compete with men.

5 seconds is a long time at the top level of the sport, its not close.

The time is just not comparable with Mens.

Put it this way, could a decent male swimmer (but not professional) swim 100m within 5 seconds of world record time? Highly doubtful.

But could a decent (but not professional) male tennis player/ boxer/ athlete/ weight lifter/ soccer player ... (you get the idea - pick almost any sport) beat a PROFESSIONAL female in any of these sports? Probably, yes!

Because interest you have to look at mainstream and more hardcore interest. Tennis is one where women and men have equal interest from the mainstream. Gymnastics is heavily towards female even though not a lot care. Skateboarding, volleyball and Golf , well outside the male PGA tournament and Tiger Woods, no one could probably outside of hardcore fans mention one female pro golfer.

As to physical, there is no competition there which is why male/females are split up

So I don´t know if you know a lot about this sport, but those times are nowhere close to each other. Sure these are WR and results of peak conditions from the athletes. But let´s take the last World cup in swimming here 50m´s winner for men was 21.49 and for women, it was 23.83

I remember reading that ultra marathon is perhaps one sport where women could run faster due to storing more fat naturally. Yet at the shortest distance, 50km / 31 miles, the difference is 25 minutes and it only increases as the distance is longer. 100 miles and it is close to 2 hours.

@Jacanuk: The main question was most equal in skill and talking professional athletes. I don't need to ask about grade school or college cause I know women can beat their peers and know professional women can beat average man, but have read of professional woman mma fighter losing to a amateur who she should have whooped. So I figured there is reason to look at popularity and draw, cause even if we are better and can out class them in every aspect, does it matter if no one cares and women are a bigger draw.

So talking post-college and mostly professional vs professional, I don't believe that many women can consistently compete with the men. Like I imagine the best WBNA player is better than the worst NBA player, but doubt you could win a championship with a woman starter getting 30 minutes a night. However I think a woman could coach a team to a title.

WWE has the women main eventing Wrestlemania and they are just as big of draw as the men. I don't think Skateboarding is that far, but women and street skating is becoming super popular and people respect all the women. But, fact is, the women at WWE are sawft and couldn't compete with the men, however, the tough girls like from Lucha Underground/Mexico, they convincingly fight the men all the time and not talking Chyna like women. As for the women in skating, none of them could ever beat Nyjah Houston.
