This is just a hypothetical topic. Suppose that for whatever reason you had to convert to another religion. Doesn't matter how much you love your current theistic choice, you've got to choose a new one now. Which one do you choose?

Note: Atheism and agnosticsm aren't choices since they aren't religions. Also, if you happen to be atheist or agnostic, it's time to pick a religion.

As for me, if I had to choose a religion, I'd probably go with buddhism or convert back to christianity. Actually, now that I think about it I'd probably go with buddhism.

Buddhism seems like an interesting choice from the limited knowledge I have of it.

Christiantity, because nowadays, a lot of "christians" go to church once a month, and thats all they do religiously.

I don't really have one right now. I guess I could go back to considering myself a Christian, assuming I don't have to go back to my old church.

If that counts as a religion in here then I'll go with that.

Buddhism, I suppose. I'm not really sure, because I can't really see myself in another religion.

Buddhism, or janism, but that would take a lot of courage to have to change my lifestyle so drastically.

Hinduism. Specifically, Advatia Vedantic Hinduism. It makes the most sense... out of all the religions I've surveyed. It doesn't approach religion in the same sense that most other religions do. It doesn't claim that it is "right" and you should convert or burn in Hell for eternity. It claims it is "right" and encourages you to find out for yourself, why it is "right." Instead of blindly accepting it through faith, it attempts to show you how other people have reached the same conclusion.

It, along with its derivative religions (Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism), don't claim they are the "one true" religion, but merely one of the many paths to the same goal.

I would not likely join an Abrahamic faith, because I do not like the idea of being watched over by some cosmic father figure, ever judgemental of my actions, and demanding my respect. To me, that says man deserves not to be his own master, that we ought not to own ourselves.

Well, some churches aren't so bad, but any that take the Bible literally or who do not seriously question the fundamental concepts of the faith (for example, the trinity, which is a BS cop-out in my mind. A monotheistic god is one, not three.) would not be worth my time. Unitarianism might be worth a look.

The other one that I've considered looking into is ISKCON (Hare Krishna, colloquially.) I think that I could live be the precepts of that faith, and I think there is a lot of merit in what they have to say. The idea of living a good life of one's own volition to achieve unity with the supreme is much more appealing than being a good boy to avoid eternal damnation.

That's downright offensive, ignorant, and pig headed. What's the difference between saying that and "If you happen to be religous, it's time to give up your faith and except a godless universe..."

But since you insist, I choose Satanism.

1. I'm atheist

2. It's called "jocular language". Perhaps you didn't read the rest of the post?

3. The word you should have used was "accept" not "except"

Buddhism for sure, because it can be practiced non-theistically.

I'm agnostic to the core, but imo Buddhism absolutely pwns every other religion on the market.

I wouldn't join an organized religion, I'd simply be monotheistic. When "seeking a religion" I am essentially seeking after truth. I cannot logically comprehend a world without God and I can't imagine that this God would be completely impersonal - aka deism. I also have issues with New Age beliefs, Eastern religions, Islam, etc.

One could argue that I'd be a Christian without the Bible or Jesus. ...which immediately depresses me to think about it. I can't imagine my life without Christ.

does changing denomination of christianity count? if so, i would change from Lutheran to baptist so I could say: "Amen brother"

if I had to completely change religion i'd go with judaism, because they believe in the same god, just no Jesus. :(

I'll show with an example. Your logic applied to Christianity, gives us something along those lines: "In Christianity they worship a dead jewish zombie".

See how ridiculous this logic is?

PS: Mods dont mod me as I dont believe in that zombie quote. I used it for demonstrative purposes. Thank you.

No one wants to convert to Islam for the 72 virgins in Paradise? In all seriousness though, I have to go with the Baha'i faith. I don't know much about it, and I don't like how they believe that God is unknowable, but I do like the unity that they promote.

The central ideology of Buddhism does not revolve around worshipping the statue of a Buddha. The statue only serve as a manifestation of all of Buddha's virtues and as a visual representation of Buddha to all who aspire to emulate him. One way for a monk to become enlighten is through meditation, he would conjure up the image of Buddha and all that it represents and recite (out loud or in silent) passages of prayer as an attempt to cleanse oneself of "sin" or "karma". Basically, it is easier to use the image of Buddha while one meditates instead of thinking about the abstract idea of "goodness", more practical that way.

I would admit there are many self proclaim lay Buddhists out there who think of kowtowing or worshipping a statue of Buddha, in and of itself, will bring them luck and lead them to "heaven"... to me that is just "idol worshipping" at best. The practice is comparable to if a Christian only worship the symbol of a cross or a statue of Jesus Christ as an end to itself while neglect or outright disregard the actual teaching of Christianity, it is not sufficient to lead anyone into heaven.

The theory of evolution so emphatically destroys the doctrine of karma it's not even funny....

Anonymous_2

Um... how exactly? Karma is cause and effect... and that is most certainly something that can be objectively proven. The whole "rebirth" thing cannot, but from I've read, I've got far more of the causality vibe from karma than the rebirth thing, especially in the Upanishads. The Vedas definitely deal with a lot more mythological ideas, but Vedanta is much more philosophical. They try to unemphasize any sort of supernatural connotations throughout.

I have thought about it and I honeslty can't see myself as part of any other religion.
