. . .Despite the fact that it's true.
Well, we had that topic about whether or not you can call yourself an African American if you're white and from Africa; now we have our answer. Behold the PC Era.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
"He said some classmates and staff members at New Jersey Medical School found it offensive that a Caucasian man would call himself ``African-American'' and that the fallout led to harassment and eventually his suspension from the school." :|
"He said some classmates and staff members at New Jersey Medical School found it offensive that a Caucasian man would call himself ``African-American'' and that the fallout led to harassment and eventually his suspension from the school." :\DivergeUnifyIt's ridiculous that it's offensive. Are they ignorant to the fact there are white people in Africa?
This is the problem with people attributing race to skin color. Then again, "race" itself is so broad and diverse that we can't accurately categorize people
Many of us probably have matching DNA with people from West Africa even if our skin color is nowhere near dark enough to be considered what we call "African American" or "Black".
Serodio, who lives in Newark, said some school employees and students told him not to describe himself as ``African-American.'' In the aftermath of his comments, Serodio said, flyers were hung around the school mocking him, he was assaulted and his car was vandalized.
- assualt, flyers and having his car vandalized , aside from being suspended because of his remark is really going overboard...
lol stupid people being stupid people. always entertaininglolwotrickrollI find it depressing, not entertaining.
That school is sooooo dumb. Seriously, people from Africa are African, if they are from Africa and are American Citizens they are African-American, is that so hard to comprehend.. Most the black people in America can't really call themselves African Americans because the fact their ancestors have lived in America for over 100-150 years now.
Political correctness is racism.
This man is not allowed to celebrate his heritage due to the color of his skin. That is RACISM. Political correctness is racist, even moreso than some other racist policies because some of those actually blatantly admitted "Not all people are equal", but not political correctness.
Its even more racist because its masquerading as a policy for tolerance.
I will never, ever understand where the term "African-American" even came from. I can't seem to find this one poll on self-identification, but it basically said that most black people just call themselves "black", and that "African-American" was only used by some 25% of black people. The introduction of the term was basically attempting to fix something that wasn't broken in the first place and making it worse in the end, although I suppose that tends to be what government is best at.
All those terms are stupid because it encourages segregation by implying they can never be 'American' It's stupid how that works in Canada too. In other countries you become assimilated. There's nothing un-PC about calling someone Black, White, or Brown.I will never, ever understand where the term "African-American" even came from. That is dumb. Black is a better descriptor for black people since there are black people everywhere. Same with every race.

Black describes skin color, not race.
Yes, and skin color is exactly what people are talking about when they say "African-American", making it a rather stupid term as a result.
Race is an incredibly ill-defined concept, anyway.

"Black American" is a bit more accurate than "African-American"
but this brings up the question: Who is "black?"
He's not technically right. Race is about genetic history not geography or nationality. Of course kicking him out of school, assaulting him, and vandalising his property over the statement is pretty effing stupid.
My guess is there's another side of this story where this guy is an ass, and justifiably kicked out for several reason none of which have to do w/ this comment.
Pretty much. The comment must had been the water drop. And anyway a guy that calls himself african-american must be looking for some trouble... if you`re an American citizen, you`re American, point. No more discussion. I find calling people like African-american or something-american silly. Its practically trying to distingue the other person, because of his origin. He's not technically right.
