6 British SAS members have been detained in libya, interesting considering the SAS have been sent it to secretly train rebel/guerilla armies before.

it said that they are there to get the uk government in touch with the rebels trying to topple the Gaddafi regime.

I would rather have the skilled SAS just eliminate the threat rather then train the rebels. Would result in quicker stability.

Apparently they were just there to escort some diplomats who need protection due to all the unrest and violence, not there to do any fighting. They've been released now. :)

But in all seriousness, I'm glad they got released.

Looks like it was just a misunderstanding between the SAS and the Rebels. A military helicopter arriving with a handful of highly trained, heavily armed SAS personnel doesn't really say "let's establish diplomatic relations" does it? :P

Seems to me that the Rebels weren't really sure who they were, but then realised what the SAS were doing and let them go.

"Freed" implies they didn't murder ever single person within a 2 km radius of where they were held before assembling a small cruiser to sail back to Britain in. I can see where some would make the mistake of calling that being "freed".

It would actually make more sense to train the rebels. At the end of the day you are essentially teaching people to fend for themselves so you don't have to constantly intervene every time some tyrant takes over. Hearts and minds campaigns have always been more effective than shock and awe strategies.

It's a possibility, a lot of SAS go on to work for personal protection agencies and tbh nobody is better suited.

They have done bodyguarding in the past when dealing with very serious threats like the IRA. It may have been unauthodox and temporary but SAS do just about anything when necessary.

they do actually, they have security courses in the SAS. they're sent as bodyguards to the prime minister and high ranked people, but only in unstable countries which require more security than usual.

Not read the article not read the replies but heard on the news they just let the SAS people go. They didn't want to have all that on their hands, you can understand why.

yeah I thought that was kinda obvious. According to BBC "Most of the group were dropped by helicopter into eastern Libya on Friday but were later seized by opposition fighters and found to be carrying weapons, ammunition, maps and passports from four different countries."

Doesn't sound like a simple security team protecting a "diplomat" being dropped in the middle of the night. SAS failed, Spetsnaz would have done a better job and probably wouldn't havebotched this mission:P

Yup, considering the Rebels aren't at war with us there was no need to go in like this. There was a military guy (think he was ex-SAS or something) on BBC radio today who said that they could have just boarded HMS Cumberland, arrived at a port and walked in openly. The Rebels have continuously said they don't want foreign intervention so I've no idea what my govt was thinking. All they've done is reinforced Gaddafi's claims that Westerners are interfering.

I think any special force that did that would get caught also, so stop thinking you're superior Americans. They basically landed in front of everyone, if they were to go un-noticed then they would have been more discreet.

CIA historically never did this directly they merely planned and put together pro forces in the region to fight the government... They never acted directly.. Now this isn't to say I condone or find this acceptable most times, just saying.. If the SAS moved directly it would be an act of war.

CBR600-RR

The Spetsnaz wouldn't have gotten caught. In fact, the spetsnaz most likely would have dressed up like libyan rebels, captured a bunch of clueless SAS chumps, disrupted their plans, turned them over to the local militia, and then returned home to play a quick game of chess with Kasparov.
