On principal people who actually contribute to society (doctors, civil workers, soldiers, etc) should make more than athletes, but since this is capitalism, it really dosn't matter. I do however think that actors and music artists should be paid a pretty big wage because they contribute to cultural advancement.

Tokugawa77

Well thats hardly fair.. Some of the greatest cultural advancement was done by athletes.. In and out of the arena..

Maybe it's just my bias against athletes- but can you honestly tell me that Micheal Jordan, for example, affected the country more than lets say, The Beatles? Sports are just for entertainment but the media and music are much more- they can change our world view as a country.

I'm sorry, yes, MJ had about as much of an impact on the country as the Beatles. On the world, as the Beatles, if you really want to get serious. But, that's not much of a social change. I can say that Curt Flood, Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson and a host of athletes, have effect and impacted various social movements enough to change our world view as a country, as you put it.

No one forces people to buy their stupid songs or watch their stupid movies or their stupid sports games..... They provide a service (entertainment)...and people are all too willing to pay for it. So who shouldcare? Who are you to complain?

They pay a @$%@ lot of taxes anyway. So meh. :/

I agree. There should be a limit to how much someone is allowed to make.

What? No. Punishing success isn't fair. (I hope that doesn't make me sound like a Repub >_>)

How is it punishing success:? What half a million isn't good enough for people now. I hate how society isn't content with just enough, more, more, more that's all we want and if we don't have the option to get more we lose motivation to even try. Somethimes I hate western society,

Fine. Leave it then. Go move to Somalia or Pakistan or somewhere. You won't be missed. -_-

Furthermore I can't help but laugh at the irony of statements about it sucks being the west.. They complain about the athletes who actually risk their bodies and do things that most people can't.. But they don't cry about the people behind the scenes that make the majority of the money, such as owners.. How bout some consistency here? If yoru going to be critical, be critical of the whole system.. Not the people who are risking the most, and are getting paid the least!

What's the incentive to perform if you can never make more money? And don't say that shouldn't be an incentive, because it is and that will never change.

I think it's fair to point out that people have been involved in athletics for some time and are to this day without ever earning a penny from it. We have acquired a body of scientific evidence that has allowed us to adapt physical training methods along side nutrition in order to generate athletes of a higher caliber than in the past. There are more resources available to us than ever before in the history of man kind. I don't think it is driven by incentives anymore than it's driven by personal satisfaction of performance and competition. Incentives are not exclusively monetary.

Not really..... Blame the public for watching them. If the actors and athletes did not generate profits they wouldn't get paid as much.

Sure there's some who compete soley for the sake of competing. But most would rather do it on a professional level. There's tons of smaller and semi-pro ball clubs out there full of guys who played in college but, in spite of their best efforts, couldn't reach a higher level. These guys still love to play and compete, so they still do, but you know most of them would love to be in the majors.

It's what they are good at I guess. Not all of us are gifted athletes or have the looks/charm/skills to be movie stars..I know I'll never make money like that.

While these people get paid for playing sports and having fun, firefighters, doctors, and our military save lives and risk theirs for pennies, so what if they worked since they were kids? its not like doctors become doctors in one day. No wonder why we are in a bad economy.

I know they get paid alot because of US paying their salary but that money should be used in more important things than buying a mansion and a golden airplane

Merc009

Meanwhile, you might only see a doctor once or twice a year for a regular checkup. Whereas your garbage man probably picks up your trash once a WEEK. He plays a crucial and important role in ensuring that society doesn't degrade into an orgy of festering disease due to trash rotting infront of peoples' homes.

See, here's the thing...an actor or an athlete might be able to demand $50 million per year if he's bringing in an assload of money is revenue. Tom Cruise gets paid a lot because lots of people buyt movie tickets to see Tom Cruise. He's not easily replaceable, HIS presence gets people to watch money.

By contrast, how much money is your doctor/teacher/garbageman bringing in? If Tom Cruise turns down a role, you can just not watch the movie. But if your doctor quits or gets fired or gets killed in a car accident, you're gonna get another doctor. You don't SPECIFICICALLY need HIM. What you need is a competent doctor. In terms of money, celebrities attract more business than doctors and firemen. The ones who are REALLY profittable are a lot harder to replace than a doctor or a marine.

People in the armed forces are usually highly replaceable. So are garbage men, gas station attendants, and elementary school teachers. And that's why they don't get paid much. You don't get paid in terms of how "important" your job is. You get paid according to how much money you're bringing in, and how easy it would be to replace you. A-list athletes and celibrities are EXTREMELY hard to replace. Most doctors never even get national fame, and teachers are even more replaceable. And as far as your garbageman goes, most people wouldn't care if they killed their garbageman by throwing feces-laces needles in the trash. Doesn't matter how "important" his job is, it's easily replaceable. So someone will pick up his slack even after you unintentionally killed the poor bastard.

Anyone that can fill a stadium and have millions watch them on television by doing 'something' deserves what they get.

On this general topic, I find it funny when people who contribute to pro-athletes salaries by regularly attending sporting events and purchasing team jerseys complain that athletes are overpaid. (I have no reason to think that TC is one of those people, just to clarify).

To further that, who should decide how much is 'too much?' And how much is 'too much?'

Doctors paid more? Yeeeeeaaaah... sure. I agree firefighters should get paid more and military should get paid more if they are on active service on a war zone, but Doctors get paid buckets of money, at least in the US. It's a fair pay currently, mind you, but they don't really need anymore.

Sure, as long as you don't mind limiting all businesses. I assume you are also a believer in extreme socialism/communism. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think you're wrong.

Many of you seem to consider higher taxes a punishment. So the rich in many European countries are being "punished" with those high tax rates, right?

They entertain people, bring joy to many. I think that's a good goal and in the end it can be hard work. Lots of missed and failed auditions, preparing for roles, trying to get ahead in a highly competitive market. Sure military and doctors deserve love, but they get a great deal of bonuses and money themselves, and people go into those jobs knowing what to expect.

Personally I don't have an issue with it, as long as its proper celebrities like Brad Pitt or The Beatles getting good cash, and not idiots like The Situation being paid for being their idiotic selves on TV.
