Is Mission Impossible better than James Bond now?

I prefer Jason Bourne series more grounded then both James Bond & Mission Impossible combine. Though I will say that I find Mission Impossible more action towards then James Bond.

I really like them both but I voted for Bond. Those movies always have a certain charm to them, whereas the Mission Impossible series is more of a classic, though top notch, American action franchise.

They're both, overall, lame. Really wish they'd get better writers involved in Bond and take it back to the Cold War. I would have fired Neil Purvis and Robert Wade after Die Another Day. They're STILL writing the movies. Casino Royale was as good as it was because it was based on a book. Didn't care much for Quantum or that one that came after and never bothered with Spectre.

Yes, think the problem is while it's totally surpassed Bond when it comes to stunts (and part of this is Tom Cruise doing his own stunts), never really find myself attached to the characters at all. Any of them could die at any time and wouldn't give a shit.

Daniel Craig has this problem as well barring Skyfall where the whole "he's getting on" and Judi Dench as effectively his mother, works really well in tandem with the villain.

Spectre is especially bad. Tries to come up with some integrate plot to force him with a woman (who does nothing) and have a rivalry with Blofeld, who is his evil brother, because of course.

Quantum Of Solace was actually pretty invested in Camille Montes, she had a pretty good story, better than Bonds in the movie.

It has to be said as well, Tom Cruise is great at the stunts, but it's Tom Cruise. That's who you see. The scientology mentalist man who jumps on couches.

Mission Impossible (1996) and Goldeneye are the best of the bunch.

James bond movies has this sexual charm that mission impossible does not have.

It could possibly, if that nutjob wasn't the star of the Mission Impossible movies.

Can't say I agree here, but Goldeneye is unquestionably Brosnan's best movie. Almost everything is perfect barring a couple of plot-holes. There's also a setup that the car will be used, but it never gets used, dude just drives off with it. It's weird.

Tomorrow Never Dies has a decent first half with a few great action sequences, I love the bike chase, almost as good as the tank sequence, but ridiculous and creative using largely practical effects. Final act sucks.

Aside from the fish tank blowing up and that pretty awesome train sequence, can't remember much of the original MI.

@heirren: Yes. The second John woo, the third JJ Abrams. These three movies might as well be different franchises. It's a lot more consistent now.

James Bond I get it, he's been around that long you expect change.

The MI movies have always been, with the exception of MI2, pretty good IMO. TBH I really enjoyed the slower pace of the first movie, the focus on espionage over action, compared to the latter movies. With that said, the later movies have been incredibly fun and great and well-acted and well-written (but I am not a writer so take that with a grail of salt). Love the bad guys, love how there's this small, intimate group of characters and villains but there's always something massive on the line (like, say, the Kremlin exploding).

Bond movies have also been fun, but frankly I don't like my action movies to take themselves that seriously. Craig is an excellent Bond as well, and Dame Dench as M has been a good dynamic

I don't know, man, I think his acting makes me forget that. I'm not saying he is the greatest actor in the world, but I think he does a well enough job being different in each role. I mean, there are a lot of actors out there that play the same person and generally are a bit too much of themselves (i.e. Nicolas Cage is always weird ol' Nic Cage in his movies...), Tom Cruise doesn't do that.

@mrbojangles25: Not saying he's dislikeable, he clearly puts his heart and soul into these. It's just, well, it's Tom Cruise. There is plot stuff in the latest one where you're suppose to give a shit about his relationship with his former wife, but it's very "who cares"... part of that is unfortunately down to him and also partly down to her character being, well, boring. Fallout would have been better if they just snipped that shit out.

Craigs great for sure, but the only one where I've been invested in the character is Skyfall, and part of that is a terrific script and as you mention, Judi Dench. Javier Bardem as well of course, who's actually relevant to theme of the movie than some-evil-bloke. He's basically a better written Scaramanga.

Spectre, uh. Missed the mark big-time.

The older Bond films are great and over-the-top but now I would rather watch a Mission Impossible film. Craig just isn't my cup of tea.

Anything is better pre-craig. Cannot wait till he fucks off.

It worked better like that imo. Directors had more freedom because there was less of a story to cling to as more films were made. Much of the cast has grown tiresome.

These are the only 3 standouts imo with the first film being a classic.

Take the "now" out of the question.

Mission impossible movies are superior to James Bond movies period.

Don't mind returning characters as long as they are engaging. I mean Bond basically had Q for something like 60 years and never got bored of seeing him and he was in all sort of differently toned movies.

On the other hand, Léa Seydoux character will be returning once again, while she was very pretty, she really was pointless and forced. The Craig movies have been fixed on having a continuing narrative (largely barring Skyfall) where they try to spiderweb everything together and just doesn't work.

Apparently the new MI movies will be filmed back to back, so presumably it will be an Avengers: Infinity War type thing. Who knows.

Let's see how Mission Impossible goes after Tom Cruise retires from that series. But that could be a good decade b4 that happens.

Couldnt tell yah the last Marvel film I watched. Looks like a daytime soap opera from the outside. Its why i dont really bother with tv; dont bother with streaming services. I lost interest in Game of Thrones around season 3. It turned into a soap opera drama and tbh i cant fathom how people are so engrossed in it, though to be fair i personally knoe people that spend theor own time getting up in other peoples business so to each their own.

A film, even within a series, should still stand on its own. MI5 felt like a fresh start. Good introduction of a female interest for Tom Cruise. The follow up then brings his wife up with next to no exposition. Waste. Doesnt hold up.

But yeah money is money and these corporations see this formula thats been so successful on the tv/streaming format that they follow that.

Game if Thrones...........aweful. laughable.

No, but the John Wick series is a better Action series than either.

That's fine....simply a difference of opinion. Personally I loved the John Wick movies, my favorite Action series of all time. James Bond with Connery and a couple Roger Moore movies were excellent as well.

As for Mission Impossible...weeeeell, never could get into them, not a Cruise fan either, but that's not the reason

Action movies are not usually my cup of tea, I prefer it's brother genre the Thriller, which generally has slightly less action and is less straight-forward, instead tends to be more twisting and thought provoking.

My issue with the first John Wick is that it just went on too long. The last 30 mknutes felt like it was done by a different director.

Only thing Tom Cruise can see is James Bond wee-wee cause he is so short.

Mission 2 is the second best in the series. Really dig a few segments of the score, as well.

Timothy Dalton gets a bad rep partially because he was a replacement for Brosnan, who was originally suppose to play the role much earlier, but was wrapped up in a contract for a renewed Remington Steel.

That and people had been so conditioned to Roger Moore that the idea of a more realistic less light-hearted Bond wasn't wanted at the time.

He basically is the second best Bond after Connery imo. The only thing that falls flat is the humor, but it's nowhere near as bad or forced as Daniel Craig. Living Daylights and License To Kill are two of my personal fav Bond movies, lol screw those people.

on Majesty's Secret Service is also (again opinion) one of the best movies, but like Dalton it's maligned by a one time Bond and feeling way ahead of it's time, that it's like watching a Dalton or Craig movie in the 60's, so it became something of a red headed step child only to be reassessed decades later. Sure, the Bond does suck ass, he literally wasn't an actor, Diana Riggs and Kojak are superb. The action sequences as well inspired people like Christopher Nolan with Inception as well as future Bond movies where they tried to replicate sequences over and over. Like, when that avalanche happens, they do set off explosives on the side of a mountain.

Roger Moore movies basically copies this twice, and The World is Not Enough has a really poor version with no tension.

But yea... Timothy Dalton was awesome, he was contracted to do more but it never went forward.

The lead of MI - is Tom Cruise, and it will be forever, he's a good actor and perform all tricks himself, no doubt it's cool and worth to respect, but common, the only one actor for almost 24 years?

At the time it probably did need a new Bond refresh as there was such a huge gap just like Craigs reset of Brosnan.

At least Dalton can say he reign didn't burn out with deteriorating quality. He also didn't have to act alongside Madonna.

Brosnan has both the best and worst bond films imo.

There is an oddity in there. I forget if its World is Not Enough or Die Another Day, but the first act where he looks like a prisoner of war is of much higher quality than the rest of the film. Leaves the impression that there was some directorial issues between parties.

@heirren: Yes. The first quarter or so of Die Another Day (barring that god awful theme tune) is pretty good.

It was to mark the anniversary so they felt the need to go completely overboard, setting the dial to 11 and ham-fist any reference they could.

The director also believed (quite correctly actually) that CGI was the future. So they tried to replace all the traditional stunt work with CGI PS2 stuff that just looks terrible.

By comparison Goldeneyes tank sequence got complaints from Russians because they genuinely thought Saints Petersburg was torn up.

Well not quite. The script was written and they asked him IF he wanted to come back. It wasn't actually written for any specific actor.

He had been their last Bond and they did ask him if he wanted to come back after the script was done. Least that's what Barbara Broccoli stated. But they wrote the script for a movie no matter who played it.

Actually they tapped Brosnan first but Remington Steel decided to stay on because of the publicity and he couldn't play Bond.

As with most things, 007 lost a lot of its luster the further it strayed from the Dalton version. I would have loved to see him play the lead much more than his minimal outings even going as far as doing the job over Mr. Remington Steele. Goldeneye and such weren't bad but I could never get into the current day Bond. The progression after late 80's Bond wasn't for the better. Losing Cubby did it in, IMO.

@Solaryellow: I at least agree when it comes to the music. Goldeneye had a really cold war steely beat to it, but the music score afterworlds (barring the title sequences) have been instantly forgettable.

Living Daylights was John Barry at his peak. Every sequence is used perfectly, even when some dude is throwing explosive-milk bottles, which should be the dumbest shit ever, but the entire sequences works (and is awesome) because of the music score.

Ha, saw that randomly about half a year of so ago, was shocked to learn it was Disney. Basically categorize it as a horror film.

Both Glen and Hamilton are a big part of why the 60's through 80's Bond films were spectacular.
