If it's harmful to others or effects them negatively, yeah, it probably is.

Only if you're okay being anti-social (or non-social, if there is a difference).

See, up until about a month ago I was fine being a loner and non-social, and now, while I still don't like going out, I hate that I didn't keep any good friendships with people. After a bad break up I'm all alone and I just have no one to turn to and help me out (except online friends, which is obviously not the same). So that sucks. Big time. I'm pretty quiet and a bit awkward in conversations, but I like to think this adds a little bit of charm to me. :/ Otherwise, I guess it doesn't and that's a bad thing.

Indeed.

I don't think so it depends on how much I guess I'm more of a loner than anything, but I do hang out with friends quite often. I like being alone more though

It's ok to be anti-social on occasion I think. Sometimes you just wanna hang out by yourself. Tonight is a perfect example for me. I could have gone out, and I almost did, but I decided to stay in and relax. Wasn't really feeling going out tonight.

depends on your views. i'm not exactly anti-social, but i'm rather untalkative. i find that mixing with people can be somewhat of a hassle, but i still need to, like any human, interact with people every once in a while.

on the good side, people like me are less prone to peer pressure. while at college, those with big groups of friends tend to smoke together, since i'm not involved in a particular group, smoking doesn't seem like an obligation to me. aside from that (my top reason), i can do whatever the **** i want, and no one can give a **** about it.

Being anti-social can only be bad for yourself, unless you want a life of solitude.

Non-social, no. Anti-social (disorder) means you have no remorse and are a threat to a society.

It's been a few years since I've taken any psych classes, but antisocial personality disorder means that you basically lack a conscious or a heart. You might here it being diagnosed to criminals. I don't remember if nonsocial is the proper term or not, but there is one where the individual prefers to be isolated and away from others. I maybe wrong and antisocial itself has its own meaning, but when I hear it being thrown out, I think of the personality disorder.

Yes, antisocial behavior is bad, though I have a feeling that there's confusion over what antisocial behavior is.

Internet says, "unwilling or unable to associate in a normal or friendly way with other people". I'll go with that.

Yes. When a person can't form and maintain relationships, it's bad.

I looked it up in a dictionary.

"1. unwilling or unable to associate in a normal or friendly way with other people
2. antagonistic, hostile, or unfriendly toward others; menacing; threatening
3. opposed or detrimental to social order or the principles on which society is constituted
4. Psychiatry. of or pertaining to a pattern of behavior in which social norms and the rights of others are persistently violated"

Im neither introverted extroverted (its spelled differently but i can't remember) however most the people where I live are usually some of these; shallow, stupid, D-bags, boring, try-hards, sychophants, annoying, spoiled, ignorant , unfriendly, bit**y or I just simply couldn't find any reason why I would want to or wouldn't want to talk to them. So most the time I end up looking introverted (i think thats what you mean instead of non-social?)

INTROVERSION

"1. the act of introverting or the state of being introverted.
2. the quality, tendency, or disposition of being introverted.
3. Psychology.
a. the act of directing one's interest inward or to things within the self.
b. the state of being concerned primarily with one's own thoughts and feelings rather than with the external environment."

Love that dictionary.

A defining chracteristic of intorverts is that they do not need nearly as much human contact as other people. They for the most of the time prefer to be alone, which is exactly what a couple people here were saying about "nonsocialists".

thats what it was termed on this thread D: I didn't come up with it and I know its wrong which is why I offered introvert as a better description than non-socialist. D:

I wouldn't say it's a good thing. Human interaction is good for the spirit. If your alone all the time, it's gonna be hard to stay happy, and you'll end up talking to yourself...who wants that. If you prefer being on your own, that's fine, no one really has a problem with it. But it's just strange. I love talking to other people.

I dunno what's wrong with me...people say I'm anti-social but after reading some of these definitions, I'm not so sure...

I hate talking with people (I even have problems talking online with people)

If someone tries to have a conversation with me, they end up getting a lot of short answers with no explanation:

"Yes, No, I don't know, I guess, I don't care"

Most people who meet me think that's about the extent of my vocabulary...I've never been comfortable talking to people...the only friends I ever made I made at school...most of which I no longer talk to...there's a small group of friends I still hang out with but even that is once or twice a year...other than them, I've got no friends...

My mom and my sister are basically the only people I talk to anymore...and I'm not even very comfortable talking to them! I hate most of my family...but even the ones I don't mind, I don't talk to very much...

Heck, I haven't talked to my father in 2 years because we changed our number and I find it too uncomfortable to call him and tell him the new number...and after 2 years, it would be very awkward to call him out of the blue and say "Oh yeah, we got a new number 2 years ago...just telling you now..." Never been too comfortable talkin' too him...I don't know why...

It's difficult for me to buy stuff...it's hard for me to walk up to a McDonald's employee and order a cheeseburger! That's how bad my problem is...

I need to get a job but I can't...not because of a lack of skills but because I can not talk to people...I don't know why I can't talk to people...I've been like this my entire life...it seems to be getting worse, though...

Oh, yeah...there was a question...

Is it bad to be anti-social?

I don't know...

humans are social beings by nature. anti-social people are likely to become depressed or have mental disorders.

@majin~ or whoever the guy is above me. dude. you dont sound like you hate talking to people by the length of your post. you're simply afraid of interaction because of possible rejection. i call anxiety.

Well, I can post really long explanations like that as long as it's not directed at any particular person...plus I like writing...couldn't say that all out loud...

And I do hate rejection pretty much regardless of the situation...but I don't think my problem is quite as simple as that...

Yes, it is. Humans rely on the ability to work together for survival.. isolating yourself and being excentric is only become acceptable in modern society where populations have grown so large that one can afford to isolate themselves without being noticed.. this would never be acceptable in a hunter gather society.

I've been anti-social for a year so far; it's killing me. I can't even go to a gas station to buy a candy bar or something. I'm very xenophobic, and I always get into arguments since I expect everyone to agree with me on a matter. I have no friends, and I haven't met a single one of my old friends for two years. The only people I can talk to with an open mind are my older siblings.

Social life is essential for everyone; whoever doesn't have it has serious issues.

There's nothing good about it. A couple years ago I was completely unemployable, and even to this day I battle anxiety. Anybody who says they're fine with it is full of ****, point blank, period. If you're simply an introvert, that's fine.

It's not bad to be anti social to a certain extent. If it's to the point where you're imagining friends and talking to thin air like someone is there because you just can't deal with the loneliness anymore, then you need to seek help.

It's not good to be anti-social so I guess it is bad. Not a life I could live, I enjoy being around people too much.
