I'm not the person, I was just making up a purely fictional character (I appreciate the post count shout out though!). So basically our arguement is "bootstraps" I'm so tired of hearing this because it makes it seem like people that work in low wage jobs are just too lazy! I have worked in retail for five years and while I don't make the minimum, I do feel that I'm worth way more in both wage and resposibility, but for some reason, even though I work hard and have been employee of the month twice, I can't seem to get promoted. I live in TX and the only one other person that works for this company of my race is a delivery driver (not talking down to him but management he's not). I think it has to do with race, but you'd suggest it due to my lack of effort? PLEASE!

what ignorant remarks are those? that you work hard and two jobs for a below average salary while still supporting a kid? 'kay

Socialist696

Yes, those ignorant remarks considering I live in FL and if you can even find a minimum wage job out here, you're considered lucky. I suppose you have more to hold your head high about at the end of the day than me? What job do you work, what responsibilities do you have? Id really like to know since youre talking so poorly of an honest hardworking father.

Also put how old you are and if you live alone or with mommy/daddy still. Interest me here.

ah, that lovely bitterness. I'm guessing I hit a nerve? maybe you should have studied instead at working at macdonalds, oh I mean telemarketing, sorry, I get the two mixed up, low social status and all

I said it before in this thread, I'm an accountant, I'm glad I got here, but in the end I'm well aware there are people less fortunate me, the difference between you and me is that I don't laugh or scold those who earn less then me I don't go "lulz u work at macdonalds"

I have to say though, it's interesting you're probably the most bitter 21 year old I've ever met.

An accountant? CONGRATULATIONS, Im not about to say you aren't doing well. How old are you and where do you live and do you live alone yet? And if you reread my posts, you'd see I didn't say "lulz you work at mcdonalds" i said stop complaining about the minimum wage if thats all you aspired to do or have messed up and landed stuck there. Theres a difference.

Well, here's the thing. If you're not getting paid what you "deserve", then what's stopping you from going out and getting a job from someone who'll pay you what you're worth? One employer might not pay workers "what they're worth". But if EVERYONE'S paying you "less than you deserve", then chances are that just means that your labor isn't worth very much.

You're 25. Stop talking like you've led a full life when you're only a slight bit older. For an accountant, you sure are immature. You're smart enough to be a accountant, but not smart enough to talk down to callcenter op and make it hurt? Fail.

Same here. I'm not going to be an ass to someone because of their job. But that doesn't mean that the work they do is "worth" any more than what they're getting. I will say one thing...what one's labor is "worth" absolutely doesn't depend on how hard they work. Sure, wealthy people generally DO work hard, it's a misconception that most of them sit on their asses getting rich by doing nothing. But poor people very often work every bit as hard. It's not that one dude is working hard and the other one isn't, it's that what one guy does is simply worth more than what the other guy does.

A 10% increase would not even bring it to $8 an hour.

MrGeezer

Yeah, see, I'm not even gonna say that minimum wage workers deserve more money. But increasingly, minimum wage is just $***. It seems like it's costing more to make a living, while minimum wage isn't keeping pace. That really seems like that could end up being a big problem for EVERYONE. The less able people are able to earn a living wage, isn't that just gonna end up with stuff like lots more people ending up on government assistance? Or just plain flat out going completely broke and ending up on the streets? This really seems like this sort of thing is just everyone's problem. Yet, thegerg is 100% right. Actually raising the minimum wage significantly would put people out of work. Which, again, is sort of everybody's problem. If raising the minimum wage just a little could solve this, then fine. But as you pointed out, even raising the minimum wage by 10% still puts it at less than $8 an hour. Which doesn't really solve the problem of people being completely incapable of earning a living wage. I'm certainly not going to say that minimum wage workers deserve more. After all, minimum wage is what their work is worth, and they've agreed upon those wages when they took the job. Still, I think this whole debate is an example of something that could potentially end up a big freaking problem if it's not addressed, and simply raising minimum wage isn't the solution.

You are not going to get any argument out of me. Yes, the minimum wage could use a bump to help with inflation, yet, it should not be that which would put people out of work or close businesses (I alluded to this in the thread about raising the minimum wage to $20, though I said it in a very radical way, who knew a conservative could be radical?).

I have no problem with trying to help people better themselves if they want to better themselves and programs to do that like Georgia Works is a good thing, the only problem is, you have to be unemployed to use said program, something that even low wage earners cannot use. I learned about Georgia Works the year I was out of work in 2005. Neat program as one finds a prospective employer to "hire" them while they learn job skills without the employer having to pay any wages with the employer being able to hire said employee after a set period of time. The "unemployed worker" draws their regular unemployment insurance check during said time. The only caveat is, you have to have enough time left on unemployment to be able to use said program.

Still, someone employed can take classes at the local technical or community college to learn a new trade or career. If someone really wants something bad enough, they will make time, if they are not willing to better themselves so they can get a higher paying job, screw them, they can suffer with the low wages that they are making. Give up some of those nonnecessary things like cable TV or internet (public libraries have internet paid for by taxpayers that you can use). Take a bus instead of driving a car (at least if you live in an area with good public transportation as they do in New York City where this strike is going on) and do not start a family. If you can't wrap that thing or keep your legs shut or at least take a pill so as to not have kids, then it's your own fault for your predicament. Do not expect someone to pay you more just because you cannot make ends meet with the job you currently have.

I said it before in this thread, I'm an accountant, I'm glad I got here, but in the end I'm well aware there are people less fortunate me, the difference between you and me is that I don't laugh or scold those who earn less then me I don't go "lulz u work at macdonalds"

I have to say though, it's interesting you're probably the most bitter 21 year old I've ever met.

rilpas

Based on your posts, there's no way your anything more than a book keeper. Especially you're idiotic fixed costs comment. You think the fast food industry has higher fixed costs compared to other industries?

book keeper? the US still has those? We've stopped using those at least 40 years ago

and I honestly could not care less what you believe in, weren't you the one who linked me to a post that said that the wages only accounted for 29% of total costs? lol

You're a book keeper accountant buddy. You probably work for some retail firm doing very basic accounting, especially since they're promoting a cashier to an accounting position. No way in hell you have your CPA.

And to the second part, no. That wasn't me. But it's hilarious how you think fixed costs are whats crucial for a fast food franchise store.

And we can honestly care less what u believe in. You're back and forthing is fun to read, but really it just looks makes you look bad dude.

Anything meaningful to contribute or...?

I don't pretend to know about things, and I'm not versed in this economical talk as much to contribute. Thats most likely the difference between those who just read and laugh about peoples views like me, and people like you who play at it and are laughed at. I only stepped in because it really just grows old watching you go back and forth with these RIDICULOUS posts.

[QUOTE="Socialist696"]I just proved I'm independant and a hard worker who puts food on his wife and daughters table so they can have a good life. I work everyday to support them, have this internet I'm using, this computer I'm on, and more. So please, take your ignorant remarks back before I laugh at you any harder for even trying me on this one.rilpas

what ignorant remarks are those? that you work hard and two jobs for a below average salary while still supporting a kid? 'kay

I can't believe that you are an accountant any more. If you bothered to do the math, you can see that that 21 year old is making abut $48,000 a year, before taxes. Not exactly chump change. He is working to have a good life, even if it takes working 7 days a week (I often work 7 days a week too, but all year).

I'm guessing someone is mad, what's wrong? did you google for a way to bash an accountant?

seriously though, when you have a real argument, come back to me

And to the second part, no. That wasn't me. But it's hilarious how you think fixed costs are whats crucial for a fast food franchise store.

SpartanMSU

exactly, so why would a small increase in fixed costs kill macdonalds? See how you just proved my point?

Maybe you should google a way to bash a callcenter op, because you're too preoccupied with gloating about your accountant status now to come up with any meaningful defense. And, if I may add, look how the tables have turned on Yusuke and Rilpas. Night guys, I'm getting off. I got better things to do than read this garbage all night lol.

That should be not all year. Working more than 3 months 7 days a week is killer and makes one really tired and safety gets lax.

And judging from big time accountants like Rilpas, they need to gloat on forums about their vast knowledge to feel better about themselves. I came to this thread because the subject interested me. At least it did until you started contributing.

I can't wait until I finish my BA in IT so I can be done with these types of job, because they'll never change how they think. People are just an arbitary number to them. I bet half of them wouldn't offer their employee a ride if their car breaks down in the parking lot. So sad that money is the on;y thing that business owners see. If I broke even, but my employees were able to feed their children, I would think I still had a great business.

I'm glad you're still studying, man.

I was actually lucky enough to not have to work while studying, so I can only imagine how much harder it is study for a degree when you also have to juggle a job
