It's actually like 50/50, one side being atheist trolls, and the other being newbies who want to explain relgion and convert us.

Often when I see a person (atheist or religious) going on and on, trying to convince another person of the opposing view, I wonder if they are really trying to convince that person...... or themselves.

That's why I don't read most religious threads anymore, it's usually the same statements and arguements being repeated over and over again :l

NiKva

Your obviously biased, if you go through the threads you will find a lot of anti athiest or 'why athiests are wrong' threads etc, or indeed a lot like your own thread here, this cartoon sums it up.

I hate these threads, especially if they're opened by atheists... Why do atheist bother with religion or do you notice that atheists blah blah blah...

I've said this before, religion is something that can't and shouldn't be ignored. The questions dealt by religion are important and you can't just leave them at the hands of theologians and local priests.

The atheists who don't bother themselves with religion were probably never impacted by religion and as such, don't have much to say about it. Instead they prefer living in the clouds of neoliberalism - you do what you want and i'll do what i want.

Pretty much this. All those "Some nuts at some church did something screwy" threads don't really register with me, but a good "atheists read this and respond!" type topic is usually good for a chuckle.

There's also selection bias. Most reasonable atheists will not be found in religous threads. Those kinds of threads tend to select for the more aggressive/vocal proponents from each side. You dont see the reasonable theists/atheists because they dont feel the need/desire to push their personal beliefs on others. As for me, Long Live Odin!

That's because the Internet is a safe haven and recruitment tool for atheists.

Your reaction to atheist exposure is significant on the internet because in the real world, there's little to no opposition to the overwhelming christian marketing in the U.S.It's difficult for any faction outside christianity to break any ground. When was the last time you saw a muslim billboard? Most marketing agencies refuse to sell billboard space for any theist/atheist sponsors outside christianity.

Atheists believe that there's a large casual population that only claim they're christian because they grew up in christian households. Showing them the other side, is enough to plant a seed, make them ask questions and eventually annouce atheism.

There are tons of stories of casual christians turning atheists every day because of the internet.

You realize that there are also plenty of people getting baptized as adults during Easter Vigil at Catholic churches, right?

What does that have to do with what I said?

You made it seem as if Christians 'converting' (for lack of a better word) to Atheism is a one way street. I was merely pointing out that there is another side to that coin.

No, I don't really sit around and tabulate the number of religious threads and the specific belief of each thread creator so I can make a thread subtly implying that one side is worse in any particular aspect while adding on a generic sentence at the end about how I don't read religious threads so that I look more neutral and reasonable while hoping that nobody notices that I couldn't have accurately determined the nature of a thread and its creator without reading it.
