Movies have made me cry before but can books make you cry the same way?

I dont think books would make me cry. Im assuming that, because movies make me almost shed a tear for how epic some of them are but books have never made me feel any emotional connection to them. I hear of people crying when people die in books, I dont know if I would though.

I may get touched but never cry.

The only movie that made me shed some tears was... Cast Away. WILSON!!!

Only book that ever made me cry was The Diary of Anne Frank. It was just one sentence too, kind of strange. Only sobbed for a few seconds though.

I always thought you'd be comatose too quickly for anything to register as pain.

I hadn't cried while reading a book until last year when I read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

It wasn't the saddest book in the world overall, and Of Mice and Men definitely trumps it for most super-saddest moment, but just in the context of how much you grew to know the characters it could bring out all the feels.

I can't think of an example right now, but I'm sure they can. I get more connected to characters in books than I do in movies.

mmm so far no. only book to ever get my heart racing with worry was the The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe.

only certain songs (upon being in the right mood) have made me cry, and an extreme few movies, like Frida, Across the Universe, and Les Miserable.

many movies and few games had my eyes well up.

Absolutely.

For me personally, books (or written stories in general) have the ability to draw me in more than any movie can. So yes, it's very much possible. Though I suppose it really depends on how each person uses their imagination.

Suspension of disbelief is all that is needed to draw a connection to the characters and the events they take part in. Having a good imagination helps.

As a kid a couple of books scared me half to death - I remember reading Haunting of Hell House during a thunderstorm and getting really scared. As an adult "Salem's lot" and "The Shining" did the same thing.

But cry? (Oh, ok, I MAY HAVE shed a tear over Dumbledore - but who didnt? DANG didn't see THAT one coming.)

Aboslutely. I don't break down sobbing uncontrollably, but I may shed a tear. The most recent example was toward the end of "This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It". I also find that Dostoevsky novels have a habit of making me tear up.

The only book that has made me cry is The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. It's not the most emotional book I've read, but I had to pull an all-nighter to get it read for a class I had the next day, and it all got a bit emotional at the end. I've read more books that have made me feel physically sick. I don't do well with castration in literature.

Books? I suppose so. With sad music in the background even more so. I tried muting the music on this Lost Odyssey Dream Sequence, but it wasn't the same.

If you are able to make an emotional connection with the narrative then yes. But you have to enjoy reading for that to happen

i don't cry from books, movies, video games, music, or any medium really (or at least, i haven't yet). i guess i'm just reserved that way. still, i do get emotionally invested and the medium doesn't really effect that outside of maybe being more familiar with the language of one medium than another.

Nah, books never make me cry. They can make me smile and laugh though. I've almost cried during the end of a very dramatic movie though.

They have yet to, I think. I guess there's a distinct difference between an actual visual of the events taking place versus my own imagination.

At least to me.

Books definitely make me cry more than movies, Prehaps it's because there is a more mental and emotional attachment to the places and characters in the stories, since you have to use your own personal imagination to create them.

Never made me cry, but I've never cried from watching movies either. I read Survival in Auschwitz and the sh*t he had to do to survive was insane. Also the dude killed himself later. Still didn't make me cry though.

But yeah that was one book I couldn't handle reading for more than about half an hour at a time.

Ya, in "A Storm of swords" (part of the A song of ice and fire series- or more commonly known as the Game of Thrones series)
the Red Wedding was pretty sad because of Rob's fate, what makes it more sad was what they did with the body- the attached Grey Wind's head to Robbs body. A final insult.
