  • Definitely some great actors and catresses have come from Australia. What' be more interesting, though, would be for Australia to step up its production game and challenge Hollywood and other American outlets. With the cost of producing going down and down and down as cheaper technology makes the endavour more accessible to more people, let's see Australia pump out some good flicks. I really liked this simple action/Western movie called Red Hill, it was all Australian.

Are you nuts? Australia does not have the budgets to match Hollywood. Hollywood spends more money on marketing one film than what some entire AU films are made for. That said, a lot of these people should come home and support their local industry. Mel isn't exactly rocking anyone at the moment. Get the Gringo was utter ****

Wait, what? Isn't Australia a very rich country and it can't afford to make big films as Hollywood?

Don't know much about that sort of thing here. But I think it's really more to do with the industry than anything. Such endeavours are often more profitable when done overseas. It's like with our gaming industry. Most developers don't get much more than national recognition because of how much more profitable it is elsewhere in the world.

Ignore the silliness, Australian movie makers can make great movies. Yes, they likely won't make blockbusters like Avatar or Lord of the Rings or Titanic or whatever (isn't Peter Jackson from Australia or New Zealand, though?) because the big money is typically reserved for Hollywood, but those movies all suck, anyways. As time goes on, we'll see more and more great stuff coming out of Australia.

Actually Australia enjoys certain advantages over America with respect to it being a cheaper country to operate within. It's cheaper to make films in Australia than in America, generally speaking. Hollywood used to make the majority of its films in LA and elsewhere in California. Unfortunately, socialism is destroying California and making it very expensive to produce movies there, with more producers going elsewhere. Unfortunately, Australia is pretty left-wing and will likely make life more and more expensive as times goes on. In the meantime, hopefully we'll see some great stuff come from Australia.

The Arts do not get enough funding.

They are seen as FRIVOLOUS.

We are getting rich by raping the earth.

The arts don't need "funding" from the government. The arts need to be appealing enough to a sufficient amount of people in order to be sustainable. If you can't get a voluntary audience and require government funds to stay afloat, you probably don't have a good product.

Fool.

Translation - Your nonsensical leftist talking point of "arts needing more funding" gets shattered and now you're upset.

Oh yeah, I've known it's been a common thing in recent years for a number movies to at least produce parts of their film over here. But I guess I was referring more to soley Australian made films. It's quite hard for us to make a movie that'll make a lot of money on a more international scale. And that's why all our actors and actresess basically head over to America once they get their big break.

Well, "a lot of money on an international scale" may be a little too ambitious for most domestic Australian movies, but they can still be profitable if they market sufficiently within Australia. There is enough of a movie-consuming customer base in Australia, I think, to make such an endeavour profitable if they put out a good film. I'm just saying that the potential is there and I think that in the future we'll see more high-quality films from Australia. I hope so, anyways.

A good product? Sounds more like a popularity contest. Justin Bieber would obviously beat out Mozart any day of the week in popularity, but who exactly is the genius here?

Not really, Mozart's works have certainly generated far more wealth than any Justin Bieber products. It's not my fault that you're ignorant of philharmonic performances that cost hundred of dollars to see that sell out consistently. And that's to say nothing of other ways in which Mozart is monetized. Either way, if a product is popular and sells, a la Justin Bieber, who are you to say that this shouldn't be the case? You're not-so-subtly advancing this elitist position where you think superior bureaucrats should decide for us where our money goes with respect to the arts, because ordinary folks just aren't smart enough to support the right stuff - we need super-duper-smart people like you staffing these arts endowment projects which fund unpopular (but higher-quality) with our tax dollars that regular folks like myself just aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate. Please sir, guide me.
