I disagree, even though it's not a true Zelda game.

Either of the Atrocious DS titles will do. I mean come on, I loved the gameboy top-down Zeldas but PH and ST make me cringe.

I would have to go with Minish cap, as it is one of three zelda games I have not beat, and really tried to. Still a great game though. I have yet to play a bad Zelda. I even love the DS ones.... Oh wait, Zelda 2. It is the worst. By far.

Assuming that the CD-i trilogy doesn't exist (which it doesn't, and anyone who says otherwise is clearly delusional):

The original Legend of Zelda. Yes, it was good for its time, but it's been outclassed by every single Zelda game released afterwards. Going back to it after playing later games is kind of jarring.

I played the first LoZ not too many years ago, and I didn't like it at all. It was probably great for its time, but too many years had passed for me to enjoy it.

To give a more fair answer, I'll go with Wind Waker. The art styIe was cool (though not very fitting for a Zelda game if you ask me), and I digged the exploration, but in terms of game design it just felt rushed. They outright deleted a dungeon with some lame excuse, and the whole Triforce quest was obviously an afterthought as well. Not to mention that many of the dungeons seemed lame in comparison to the Zelda games that preceeded and succeeded it. The first two dungeons especially bored me to tears.

i havent played the portable ones, but id rank twilight princess as the worst even if i think its great. it didnt have the big spin on the series like majora's mask, it wasnt as cohesive as wind waker or skyward sword, and it didnt have the magic of ocarina. plus the bosses borrowed too much from the past games for being designs more about puzzle solving than execution.

The DS Zelda's... I just couldn't do it. Simply terrible.

And unfortunately.. I'll add Windwaker to this list. I tried four, four different times to beat this game and ended up at the Triforce Quest each time.

That quest is just so unbearable.. what were they thinking? Still, even w/o the Tri-force quest, it was the least enjoyable console Zelda experience for me.

Spirit Tracks for me. Got it a while ago, it's the first Zelda I've stopped playing because I was tired of it. Although, I'll give it credit for the creative boss fights, probably the highlight of the game for me.

PH wasn't great as Zeldas go, but it was more engaging than its sequel.

A straight answer to that question is, besides CDi, Zelda 2. In anyway I try to compare and decide which is worse, that's the one.

After that it gets tricky. Zelda 1 is horrible to play today, but I can't dismiss it because in its day it was an incredible game, but I don't care for it at all in 2011.

Besides those obvious ones, almost impossible to tell. Maybe Minish Cap, I felt that it was abit too basic and easy.

They were thinking it was the right direction to the franchise, but then they realized that the first game had a better formula and was more critically acclaimed.

Developers experiment with games all the time.

Although I think this game gets way too much hate, I am going to have to with Zelda II. There were just so many cheap, frustrating moments that made the game quite an annoyance at times. Take those dang iron knuckles for instance, those guys would move their shields up and down so fast you could never get a hit on them. It gets worse though, later on in the game they gain the ability to shoot laser beams out of their swords, making them even harder!

There were also some parts of the game that pretty much just required you to use a online guide. I remember in one dungeon, you had to walk through some invisible hole in the wall. Seriously, how was I supposed to know that I could jump through that part of the wall? There was also this one instance where you had to find a mirror under some completely random table in some empty house.

I should also mention that the final palace is probably the most frustrating dungeon in any Zelda game sans the Cdi Zeldas. The whole thing is just some huge labyrinth filled with bird versions of those annoying as hell iron knuckles. This was before Zelda games had maps, and so it was very easy to get lost and find some dead end while overpowered enemies slowly kill you to death.

That's not to say that this game is bad, however. All Zeldas are good, and I can say that I really enjoyed playing Zelda II despite its annoyances.

My vote would be Spirit Tracks. Some of the dungeons were fun, but I didn't care for the controls (this goes for Phantom Hourglass too), and I HATED the train. Hated to the point that I couldn't finish the game. I refuse. It is easily the worst Zelda game.

On a side note, I didn't really get into the oracle games. I got bored for some reason. Haven't finished either.

Zelda II wasn't so bad in my mind, just hard. So I haven't finished that one either. Got bored with Zelda I. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I had played it on the NES with the map, and could have easily taken notes about where things were.

After the righteous hate for Wind Waker's hideous graphics and dumbed down kintergarten level gameplay has subsided I'd actually put the worst so called "Zelda game" as a toss up between Majora's Embarassment and Skyward Snore.

The original Legend of Zelda. Yes, it was good for its time, but it's been outclassed by every single Zelda game released afterwards. Going back to it after playing later games is kind of jarring.

Zelda 2 is a cop-out answer.

The Zelda series can be split up into 3 types: top down, 3d rendered OoT style, and the side scrolling weird ones like Zelda 2 and those 2 CDi games. There is such a radical difference there that you have to split them up.

Worst top down: Oracle of Ages. LttP was great and OoA ramps up the gameplay to the point that is just redundant and you want it to end. Link's Awakening was far superior because it recognized that the handheld instalments of games should be simpler. Metroid Fusion also was good for this reason. Some people do say that the worst one is the original Legend of Zelda but imo that game holds up to this day. As much as I loved the linear direction of LttP, the open world of the original has a huge appeal for me, and the combat is still as satisfying and challenging as ever.

Worst 3D Zelda: Twilight Princess. For many MM would be the answer, but I'm one of the people who love the game (too much). This category is tight because there aren't that many games (only OoT, MM, WW, TP and SS) and they are all very excellent with a lot of time and thought invested. The difference for me is that TP is just such an easy game to beat and even excel at and it really is hardly innovative in the spots that matter. I'll say this about TP: the best dungeons in the series, of any Zelda type. I will also say this about WW: worst combat in the series- which almost overshadows where it excels

Worst side scroller :Zelda 2

Best side scroller: Zelda 2 (I don't count ... those other games)

Not sure if you were talking to me, but fine, here's some details. I can tell from your reasoning you like a fair challenge in your Zelda.

Zelda 2 has terrible difficulty design. From the very beginning, my hate of the game flowered. I was never sure where to go, and tried entering a few caves, but they were dark, and I kept getting killed by invisible enemies every 3 seconds. Didn't help you needed to get through one of these caves to get the candle. First dungeons, weren't that hard, just a bit annoying, but Death Mountain kicked my ass for 6 years before I finally beat it by leaving the dungeon and leveled up by finding random enemies to kill, and the leveling up takes forever. I just never thought Zelda needed an experience system, and this is the reason why. The later dungeons were hard as all hell, but I could manage due to leveling up and getting spells and such. I HATED darknuts and those enemies that throw the axes. Bosses were the best parts of the game, just because they were very difficult and when you beat them, you felt invigorated, but they were the only things I found truly enjoyable about the game. The map was just nonexistant, so I never knew where I was, and the secrets were just crazy to find. I know no one who has beaten the game, and I gave up on the last dungeon. Never even made it to Dark Link. It has been 7 years since I played this game, so sorry if I'm a little fussy on the details. I'm not thrashing the game, just venting my anger about it. It has some great qualities, I just never thought Nintendo used them to their full potential... or use it right in the EXP case.

Your choice on the worst top down I have to disagree with. I think Capcom did a wonderful job on both games, and the time travel aspect made the game rather difficult on the right level for me, but it is the poorer of it and Seasons. I did hate Symmetry Village because of the rock climbing section. My choice would be Phantom Hourglass because I just didn't think that sailing needed to exist in the DS games, I hated the time limits in the Ocean King Temple (or whatever it was called), and the boss fights until Bellum were a joke. Still a great game, I just was very annoyed by the sailing. It works in Wind Waker due to the eye-level perspective and amazing music, but it was just kind of bland in PH.

Also have to disagree with you on 3D, although I definitley know where you are coming from. It was very easy, but it had an amazing story, great dungeons, fun items, and a great art style due to the realism. I still hate Majora's mask just because the game felt unfinished to me. It felt like they didn't have time to really iron out the difficulty, and just got it to a point a gamer could figure it out with some moderate problems along the way, then released it due to their tight schedule. Fun game, just very difficult. I love the masks, the characters are colorful and slightly scary (Happy Mask Salesman), the story is dark and dreary, and the premise is just mindblowing knowing they thought of it and created it in such a short amount of time. There is no 3D Zelda that is bad, but this one is by far the most annoying.

THAT is why I don't like these games.

I could have sworn you said tell why in your first sentence. It seems you edited it out.
