I'm sure every long time video game fan has that one game that you absolutely love, but none of your friends have ever heard of. A few in particular that I own include:

  • Caveman Games (NES)
  • Bigfoot (NES)
  • Uniracers (SNES)
  • Hardcore 4x4 (PS1)
  • Demolition Racer (PS1)

What are some of your personal forgotten favorites?

My top 2 games were both made by Capcom in the 1980's - Black Tiger and Commando. Had there been no Commando, there may not have been Bionic Commando, Mercs or Commando 3. I'm sure it was also a strong inspiration for Ikari Warriors and a lot of the top-down SNK shooters.

Ordyne. I think it was a TG-16 game. But I played it on my Namco Museum Vol. 4 for the PSOne. Ahh....good times.

Well, I love many obscure games, but these are some of them:

Faxanadu (NES)

Hogs of War (PS)

Rampage 2: Universal Tour (N64)

NBA Courtside (N64)

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (PC)

Rayman M (PC)

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (Xbox) (You've probably heard of this, but have you played it? For as far I'm concerned, it's the best Xbox game ever released.)

I first played it on my friend's PS1 a looong time ago. Man, that was a blast. But I was completely stuck on, was it level 4? I think so. It was an arctic-mountain-ish facility...

That counts as a game nobody else remembers? Man, I played that one so much on PC before we got a PS2. And now my brother's obsessed with it all over again for some reason - never mind that he's 12 years old.

He even bought a Dreamcast just so he could get that version of it. I had to make a thread to ask what other games are good for the system, so his investment wasn't just for the sake of a port. :?

Theatre Europe for the Commodore 64 from 1985. A strategy game that had NATO versus the Warsaw Pact. You moved blue or red dots around a map of Europe and could drop nukes on cities and armies. Still remember the first time I won, a great feeling. Pat yourself on the back if you played this game and can still remember the launch code you had to type if you wanted to launch a nuke. I always took out Berlin and Third Shock Army right off the bat to win.

Mat Mania/Exciting Hour in the arcades in 1985. Best wrestling game I've probably played in my life. With just two buttons, you could do everything you'd expect to do in a wrestling game. Will never forget Coco Savage and how much of a pain he could be.

Conflict from 1990 for the Amiga. A political simulator that saw you playing a country in the Middle East trying to survive and disrupt your neighbours. Spent many an hour having fun with this game. Other great but forgotten political simulators that I liked where Floor 13 and Shadow President.

Hunter for the Amiga from 1991. Long before Battlefield 1942 and Grand Theft Auto, there was this game. The first sandbox open world game I remember playing. You could travel from island to island and use different vehicles like a boat or a bike. Can't remember finishing the missions, I just remember how incredible it felt to be able to travel from one area to another. A glimmer of what was to come.

Mini Car Racing for the PC from 2000. Found it at Staples in the discount bin years ago and talk about a unjust fate for a great game. Imagine slot car racing with weapons. It's one of those games that you imgaine growing up as a kid and then somebody makes it and it doesn't stink.

Trophy Hunter 2003 for the PC from 2002. The best hunting game I have ever played. Game allowed for custom maps and there were some great ones made. Sad that hunting games never bettered this effort.

Silent Bomber for PS1 racks as my all time favorite sleeper game. LOVE it. Shame I can't find another copy without the game freezing glitch.

Also, big ups for Dungeon Explorer (TG-16).

I also have a ton of memories playing games for an old Atari ST computer that definitely qualify as sleeper, but that's so long ago... I can't remember a lot of the names anymore.

Not to disappoint you, but I still remember that one. I still haven't played anything Zork, but I have played that one game that first introduced us to "xyzzy", among other things. (Never got very far into it, though.)
A glimmer of what was to come.d_parker
I've seen this game in action before thanks to YouTube, and now I want to play it. Just another sign of how far ahead of its time the Amiga was. Now, as to chime in with some games of my own: -Magic Carpet, particularly its sequel. One of many Bullfrog classics, but Syndicate and Populous get far more attention out of their roster, as does Dungeon Keeper to a lesser extent (not that there's anything wrong with that). There just isn't anything else quite like it, as you're a wizard on a-surprise!-magic carpet in a sort of Arabian setting. The goal usually boils down to possessing mana and building up a castle that acts as a mana vault and respawn point if you die, as well as a health/mana recovery area if you're still alive, but the sequel offers up more varied objectives. Problem is, there are often other wizards you'll have to compete with, and they'll be much better-equipped than you are. Also of note that this game had real-time terrain deformation...in 1994. (That's over a decade before Fracture!) Hurl a meteor into an island? Expect to see a crater where it impacted. There are also spells that let you create volcanoes or rend the earth with earthquakes! -Redline. A 1999 Accolade FPS which practically no one has heard of. The notable feature here? Cars and bikes loaded with guns to hop in or out of at any time. Not the first game to have them by a long shot (see Hunter above), nor the first FPS (Terminator: Future Shock might have had them, SkyNET definitely did, and Shadow Warrior could qualify too), but it was still novel at the time since Codename: Eagle wouldn't even show up until a year later, then add two years for C:E's developer to be acquired by DICE and distill that game's multiplayer into Battlefield 1942. There is one minor feature I haven't seen in any FPS before or since, though-you have one hell of a Swiss Army Weapon from the start, and you never collect new weapons in the traditional sense. See some new ammo? You can pick it up and use it immediately! Also of note is that the melee mode-a spinning blade-isn't completely useless, as in one singleplayer map and in multiplayer, it will let you fly for a limited time, helping to keep you from becoming roadkill. -Rocket Jockey. A 1996 Segasoft/Rocket Science Games classic that maybe two people on this entire forum have played. It all revolves around a rocket bike with grappling cables on the left and right, which you can join together if you've grabbed something on both sides. Using one of these, you have three modes-Rocket Racing, which is self-explanatory and requires you to fly through glowing pylons and making good use of the grappling cables on them to make tight turns, Rocket Ball, which has you flinging balls, hover pucks, and other objects to any goal you can find for points, and Rocket War, where your objective is to cause as much misery as possible to the other jockeys before time runs out. Of particular note is the soundtrack-it provides a nice beat while you're tying rival jockeys to bombs and in-flight rocket bikes, and since it's in redbook format, the game CD itself doubles as the soundtrack CD! (I'll leave it at this short summary lest I get too carried away making a wall of text.)

Caveman Games (NES)j-a-k-777

Ughlympics!

Joe and Mac caveman ninjas (look at my profile pic)joel_c17

Which version? The Genesis version was a pretty faithful adaptation of the arcade version, but the Super Nintendo version was pretty much a different game. There was also an unlicensed Nintendo Entertainment System version as well, if I remember correctly.

-Magic Carpet, particularly its sequel.NamelessPlayer

I thought the first one was pretty well known... though I have to admit to never hearing of its sequel!

My favorite game that no one's heard of would have to be Downtown Special, but given that it's kind of... well... Japanese... the fact that no one talks about it is justified. For those curious, Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no jidaigeki dayo zenin shuugou! is basically River City Ransom with more techniques, more equipment, more weapons, a circular world, and free roaming gangs with better artificial intelligence. Though the game still has equally as disappointing a final boss as River City Ransom.
