I remember buying Aliens vs Predator for my PS3 even though I knew it would probably be bad and all the reviews were mixed/bad for it. But I just love the franchise so had to buy it. Any of you had similar experiences?

Lost Odyssey. Though this game got decent reviews more or less. But seemed to of been ignored by american gamers. I really enjoyed the game however. Far more than I have the last few Final Fantasy titles at any rate.
A more recent one was Splatterhouse. While I did find some fun in the game despite it's extreme lack of polish. It was a shame to see a classic series like that get such a shoddy revamp.
Blood Stone 007 got mediocre reviews across the board, but it looked cool to me so I bought it. And I'm glad i did, it's much better then what critics gave it credit for IMO.
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawnis noteworthy too i guess. Gamespot gave it a harch review, though most critics liked it. I was planning to buy it regarless of the reviews anyway. It's one of my favorite games now.
after reading this topic i have discoverd....ALL GOOD GAMES GET HORRIBLE REVIEUS and all thows overly advertised main name shooters suck ass
I purchased Drakensang even though it was rated a 7.0, and enjoyed it.
The sequel is even better, and it was just released.
Sometimes I become sold on a game based off its previews provided that the game and its concept sounds ambitious enough--hence to the point where I ignore reviews completely.
But then again this is coming from me - someone who actually enjoys poking fun at flaws, oddities and bad game design.
That said, Alpha Protocol is one I can think of.
When it comes to "Big name" franchises I always go with my prior experience instead of the review score, which is why I always play Ratchet and Clank games (despite the inevitably low scores from some sites) and I always ignore Call of Duty (which always gets high scores but sucks IMO).
The last games I bought regardless of review scores were Singularity and 3D Dot Game Heroes. Both games had a Meta in the mid-70s and some scores were as low as 6/10, but I loved both of those games.
I bought Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers. It's mindless fun, repetitive, and lame, but I've played it more than I should have. I also bought FF7: Dirge of Cerberus and found it to be pretty mediocre. And the Star Ocean series, with the exception of the second one which is supposedly the best in the series.
I don't read many reviews anyway. I read as much as I can from previews, what other people think of the game and watch videos of it, and if I think it looks and sounds good I buy it. I never go by review scores as it always depends on who is reviewing it and what they like really, 1 person could give a game 8/10 and someone else would only give it a 4/10.
I never base buying decisions on review scores. I only consider what is actually written in a review, past experience with a developer's games, gameplay footage, and word of mouth. So yeah, I can think of a lot of low scoring games that I bought. Some of them were great, some of them weren't. Just like the high scoring games, sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't.
As for AvP, neither low review scores, bad reviews, bad looking gameplay footage, or bad word of mouth could keep me from getting it. I am too big of an Aliens fan. And yeah, it is definitely a game that only a fan could enjoy. But, I knew that going in so I'm ok with my purchase. (When I know I'm about to buy a game that has a high probability of being bad, I just make sure I wait for it to hit clearance first.)
Silent Hill Homecoming. It was met with lukewarm reception, but I boought it anyway cause I love horror and I'd never played a traditional SH before. (I'm pretty sure Shattered Memories wouldn't be considered a traditional SH.)
Every purchase I have ever made? I don't read reviews from professional sources, and cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would when there is such a wealth of information about gaming these days.savebattery
This This and This. :)
I don't need to watch review's to decide if a game is good for me or not. I do my own research on the game.
Any game prior to the PS2. I never looked at reviews like I do now. Sometimes they are helpful, sometimes they aren't, but back in the day they weren't even needed.

I never even thought about it like that. You speak the truth. Game reviews mean more to me now than they did before
Almost every game I've bought is like that. The exceptions are Burnout Paradise and Battlefield Bad Company 2.mrmusicman247
the ironic thing is that both those games are crap
anyway, I dont even acknowledge what critics say. most of the time they are dead wrong. it doesnt even enter my mind as I buy a game.
