Consistently Inconsistent

User Rating: 3 | Far Cry New Dawn XONE

In games past, the only two antagonists of the FarCry games that I didn't hate were the Jackal from 2 and Vaas from 3. Jackal was untouchable and he proves it halfway through the game, Vaas' personality sets himself apart. All of the others have been bad, and I don't mean "bad guys," I mean just general dicks that I'd love to pull the trigger on from the start of the game, but ultimately it never comes to that satisfaction. The twins of New Dawn are no different: they're badly-written and give zero motivation for their actions and they only enjoy having power by killing people. They're a step down from Joseph Seed in the previous installment where he gives reason for his actions all throughout the game while it's shrouded in mystery. The twins' entire motivation comes from "because Pops said so."

Hope County has been transformed into a gorgeous wasteland but it feels cramped, it's a smaller map and placed all throughout are semi-destroyed remnants of the pre-apocalypse (who knew a grain silo could withstand a nuclear bomb?) that only house materials needed for guns and cars with the occasional Easter egg mentioning a character or event from the past. The gameplay remains the same with the exception of gun and enemy ranks, which range from throwing spitballs at titans to mowing down weaklings with one shot. It's this imbalance that the game pretends to bring a deeper aspect to strategy but really all you have do is shoot, hide, reload, shoot more and you win the fight. However enemies must be mutated humans with hawk eyes that can see for great distances because stealth isn't really an option, somehow they always see you when attacking a base no matter careful or cautious you try to be.

Traversal through the map isn't fun either, the vehicles are no fun to drive and once you unlock fast travel they really have no means unless you want to use them. The wingsuit is good for a handful of jumps but with the amount of trees that are placed on the map getting close to the ground is a hard sell. Scrounging or finishing missions for materials only prolongs the game and besides the achievements don't hold any weight overall within the ludonarrative. You upgrade weapons, get kills for new skill points, done.

New Dawn could have, and should have, been another expansion for 5 since there's really not much new going on here. If you're a fan of the FarCry series then it's worth playing. If not, don't bother even if it goes on sale: it doesn't complete a story from the previous game and it doesn't feel like a part of the series. It's like another studio took over the license and created something using a few new assets.

It's a fart in an elevator: you hold your breath and wait for the ride to be over.
