A Hell of a Game: "I'm on a highway to Hell!I'm on a Highway to Hell!"
the action takes place in the small village of tristram,somewhere in england in the...12 century perhaps,somewhere around there.i can feel it.under this village,lies hell itself.poor villagers of tristram,you were the most unfortunate.but there is hope,'cause a warrior,a rouge & a sorcerer will solve this nightmarish hell...they are the ghost busters,hired by deckard cain(probably).
there are 8 villagers to whom you can talk & trade:deckard cain,member of the ancient order of the horadrim.old & very wise.the main guide of yours throught the whole series that identifies items fro you.peppin the healer.where you can heal & buy potions.griswold(poor griswold...)the man where you can buy the arsenal & repair the arsenal.ogden,the owner of his tavern,you just speak to him.gillian,ogdens wife.shes useless,she only speaks about her mother & guiding me to speak with the others about info. for the quests & stuff.farnham the drunk.probalby the single light in the whole game.it makes you laugh.wirt,a little boy to whom you must pay 100 gold to see what special item he has for you & finally adria the witch,living outside the village in a cottage:) she's the master of potions & spells.
there are 4 ways to get out of tristram:through the church(or dungeon whatever),through a crypt,through some stones,rocks & through fault from the ground that leads directly into hell.you will unlock this 3 entries as you progres in the game.
the cow level from diablo 2 was created after a mith from this game that says that if you click 5 times on one of the cows in the village,you will open a portal that leads to the secret cow level.blizzard denied this & confirmed it by introducing the cheat code,"there is no cow level" in starcraft,lol!& so the cow level from diablo 2 was created!
in this game,you can't sell anything to anyone.for example,you can't sell wands & potions to griswold.he accepts only weapons & stuff.you must sell to the respective person.
the game has 16 levels so it has "a just right" lenght-not too short & not too long.the game is hard overall.for example,at the begining untill 12 or so,you will barely survive with the weapons & accesories you have.the gold you will find will be in small quantities.the biggest amount of gold that you will spend throughout the game will be on life & maybe mana potions too.if your a warrior or a rouge,your life & mana are not regerated,they sit still.
the graphics are great,rich in details & everything is gothic.the music is also gothic creating an horror atmosphere with all those monsters & dungeons.
the worst thing about diablo 1 is that you can't run.it gets frustrating at times.the best part,a part at which diablo 2 lacks is that the monsters are not re-spawned.once you kill them,they're dead for good.you'll won't see them again.
in tristram,you have no stash where to deposite the goodies like in diablo 2.you have only your inventory.an interesting fact about the gold:you can have piles of 5000 pieces each.you can't exceed this amount.you the gold will occupy a semnificative part of your inventory but since you don't find so much items on your way,it's not such a big problem.
after you finish the game it's over.there is no nightmare or hell mode.
killing diablo himself was the easiest task in the whole game-it took me under 1 minute to slay him with a sword.i almost laught!the great diablo proved to be a wimp...but he has a fatal ace on his...forehead.the soulstone.this is the biggest threath.after you will kill him,you will take his soulstone & be corrupted by it's power.it will also revive diablo.this was the biggest mistake.diablo's soulstone should have been destroyed like it was in part 2.i wonder how diablo will rise once again in part 3.
tristram will be destroyed in part 2.griswold will be become an ordinary monster that you must slay.you will also find the wood leg of wirt,an item that helps you to open the cow level.
the first boss is memorable-the butcher that says:"flesh meat!" he's also pretty hard to defeat since you will fight him at level 2,where you are not properly equiped & skilled.
i think that diablo 1 is showing it's age mainly because you cannot run.making those small steps creates this feeling that the game is outdated.i can fell that diablo 3 is not going to be better than diablo 1.i don't know to explain it,i just fell it...
matt uleman,the one that composed the music & sounds is a genious:every sound is absolutely frightening & it makes you wonder.if he's no more for diablo 3,then you can already kiss good-bye.no other man can replace him for the soundtrack.
man,imagine that you're living in a small village & that beneath it lies hell itself.this story is better than all the stories from all the horror movies.if diablo would have had spawned a movie,it could have been of the greatest horror movies ever created.it can't get better than this:medieval,gothic,village,hell,descend,diablo etc.it creates a lot of scenarios in my head.wow,now i see:13 years have past since it's release & i can never give it up.i come back for more hack & slash.slaying monsters in this game is like jumping on goombas in mario:) it's plain fun.
if you haven't played diablo,then you can't call yourself a true rpg fan.
