Zelda: Wind Waker 2 Was Cancelled By Nintendo

Because of a horse.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was originally meant to get a sequel, but Nintendo cancelled it in favour of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

That's according to an interview with artist Satoru Takizawa (translated by Nintendo Everything), who says, "we had begun the initial steps towards creating Wind Waker 2 … However, demand for a more Ocarina-like game was growing by the day."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Wind Waker 2 Was Canceled By Nintendo

The reason for the cancellation of Wind Waker 2 and subsequent development of Twilight Princess instead is an odd one: horses.

"Wind Waker 2 would have taken place in a more land-based setting, rather than on the sea, so that we could have Link gallop across the land on a horse," says Takizawa. "But Link's proportions in Wind Waker weren’t very well suited for riding on horseback; he was too short, and an adult version of Toon Link did not seem appropriate either.

"High-budget live-action fantasy movies were also huge at the time, so with all things considered, we decided to have at it [and switch to Twilight Princess]."

The interview comes from the new Zelda: Art & Artifacts book, which is released in the UK and US in February but is already available in Japan.

Wind Waker never got a sequel, though it did get an HD re-release in 2013 on Wii U. You can read our The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD review here. Twilight Princess also got an HD Wii U version, in 2016--read our review of that here.

A more cartoonish Link, similar to the one seen in Wind Waker, returns--on horseback--in the newest Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Would you have enjoyed a Wind Waker sequel? Or are you glad we got the more 'realistic'-looking Twilight Princess? Let us know in the comments.

I would have played it if it involved picking up the storyline alluded to in the conclusion of Wind Waker where Link and Tetra were going to establish a new Kingdom of Hyrule.

Well i played Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. And from the experience both are good games of course, some have their disadvantages to the other but that depends "of your taste". Both have sweet stories, but i have to say that the gameplay of twilight had a lack of difficulty, was "TOO EASY" and "OBVIOUS" and the figth with the enemy and bosses was a joke, of course Wind Waker wasn't that difficult but had more Challenge a difference with TWP (Im not saying they have make the zelda's game like a dark souls). Now they choose to make a sequel of TWP in the next zelda game we don't know how is going to be. But looking how they made Breath Of Wild (didn't played it fucking country and crisis), maybe it's going to be great, we just have to wait for it. But really i don't mind to see Midna again.

There's only 2 Zelda games that I never was able to finish because I thought they sucked so badly, I couldn't bear to play another minute of it, and one of those 2 was Windwaker. Those cheesy cel-shade graphics and terribly annoying characters. It was like the game was made for toddlers. It's something you would see on Saturday Morning cartoons with Bob the Builder and Barney. Terrible game.

So yes, I'm extremely happy they decided to go with Twilight Princess and not a sequel to Shitwaker.

@raunsmith: Damn, you're a big boy aren't you? You need some big boy games, huh?

I can handle people disliking a game, because we're entitled to our opinions and stuff, but when you're saying shit like "The graphics look childish" it makes you look like a c unt. Give me a good reason that you don't like the game other than "I'm an entitled twat who needs edgy graphics to stave off my 12 year old needs".

I can only image what the other game you don't like is.

@raunsmith: When you can't even form a rational argument because you probably haven't even played the game and are shitting on it because it's cel shaded.

You know what else is cel shaded? Breath of the Wild. The contender for game of all time. You're argument is invalid until you give me real evidence that you don't like the game.

Also, I literally stated I don't care if you don't like the game as long as you give a good reason so you just kind of look dumb.

@bhdude: I mean seriously , can yo not read? Or do you just read what you want to see? I just gave two valid reasons why the game sucked (shitty cel-shade and annoying characters) . Just because you don't believe they are valid reasons doesn't make them invalid you nitwit. Who the hell are you to decide which are valid reasons why someone should dislike a game??? If anyone is looking dumb its definitely you.

And your only excuse is well breath of the wild is cel-shade.??? That's all you have? Just stop now dude. You're not going to change my opinion that I think Windwaker is crap.

I've tried playing Windwaker at least a dozen times. I own it on GameCube. I can't get past the fact it just plain sucks. The cheesy graphics, the terrible characters, I mean it looks like it was meant for little kids. Why do you think Nintendo cancelled the sequel? Because fans didn't want another little kiddie Zelda game. They wanted something more darker and adult themed, and that's why we got Twilight princess.

@raunsmith: Wow I can't believe I'm having this discussion.

So what, you played 5 seconds of the game and decided it was too childish for your "adult" needs and went to play Call of Duty or Hatred or some other edgy game? Are you five? Stylized graphics don't determine a good game. You can say you don't like it but it's completely invalid to reject a game bases on it's style. The game play is rich and the world is full of islands to explore. The combat is fluid and the game's bosses and dungeons invest you into exploring and puzzle solving mixed with combat...

..and you won't play it because "is bab game lol need dark gam". Is Wind Waker perfect? No. Traveling the sea to get from point A to B (until you get fast travel, but even still) is a fucking bore when you don't want to stop at every island and it's a bit on the easier side of the Zelda spectrum (the turning point from Majora's Mask to Twilight Princess where the games went from reasonably difficult to literally the easiest thing ever). But I believe the pros outweigh the cons.

I also think Twilight Princess is a mediocre game. I think it's plot with Midna is very interesting and the characters are, well, passable, but the game play and dungeons are dumbed down, the over world is so bland and empty and there's really little incentive to explore, and it tries so hard to be Ocarina of Time that it's embarrassing when it fails to compete with the game. Items have no use out of their respective dungeon, which feels wasteful, especially when a linear game like TP knows exactly what items you will have at what points. What about pacing? Lol who needs decent pacing, amirite? Certainly TP thought so because it sucks in that regard. I'm not even going to touch wolf link. Oh, and Ganondorf has no reason the be in the game other than "lol is Zelda needs Ganon fight", which is actually pretty easy but whatever.

See what I did there? I didn't mention the graphics because I'm not a little twat and instead shared reasonable subjective opinions as to why I don't really like Twilight Princess. I make a rational case and put it to dispute, covering the multiple aspects of what makes a game good. Whenever someone makes a review of a game, there are a PLETHORA of things a reviewer has to consider to make a review valid. That's objective fact and you whining about it won't change that.

I don't hate people who like the game, as I'm sure you don't hate people who like Wind Waker, but at least try to defend your case. But knowing you, your next response is gonna be "Shut up Wind Waker is a baby game and I represent the entire Zelda crowd in saying Twilight Princess is the REAL Zelda game" despite it being trashed by many people and reviewers "also you're dumb and I'm right and reason is for little kids who play Wind Waker also it's for babies I'm bored of this conversation i'm gonna play CoD and clean my fidget spinner collection"

Here's an idea for you, how about you get over yourself and realize your opinion isnt the only one that matters.

Opinion is so divided on Wind Waker. Nintendo didn't help by demoing Zelda on Gamecube at E3 as being more realistic. So, when they switched to Cel-da, a lot of people including myself, were disappointed. When I played the game, though, I loved it because of how much I was reminded me of A link to the Past's style. It's unfortunate that Nintendo doesn't listen more to fans, though, because it remains one of the best art styles for Zelda and what really made it tank was how many dungeons there were(n't). That said, Breath of the Wild is bringing some of that back, and I can't wait to play it!

So, was Phantom Hourglass chopped liver? Pretty sure that was a sequel to Wind Waker.

So glad it was canned. Wind Waker was the worst of all the Nintendo-made Zelda games. Even getting beyond the cel-shaded graphics fad, the game was really easy to get through. It was the Star Wars: Phantom Menace of the Legend of Zelda series, complete with obnoxious supporting characters (Tingle)

99% would agree that it was a good decision. Many think Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game ever made and I think it's one of the best though my favourite is still A Link To The Past.

I didn't play Wind Waker and Twilight Princess until this year when I bought a WiiU. Started off with Twilight Princess and would have to say it's a great Zelda game but it hasn't aged very well. The graphics look very outdated and bland and riding the horse was a pain.

Wind Waker, on the other hand, looks lovely. Nintendo were ahead of time when they released it. Look at mobile games today - many of them have exactly the same graphic design as Wind Waker. The game looks pretty good by today's standard. I downloaded OoT on my WiiU but I don't think I'll be able to play it, the game is simply too old and outdated but it would be awesome if they could release a remake that uses today's gamepad/gameplay mechanics.

My biggest problem with Zelda games is that they are too easy and kid-friendly. Wind Waker was extremely easy - boss fights you usually kill on the first or second try. Same with Twilight Princess. The puzzles are also a bit repetitive, many of the puzzles are the same once we saw back in the SNES era.

I'm looking forward to the new Zelda, it looks great and it's the type of design that can appeal people 10 years from now without it looking old and low-res like Twilight Princess. I do hope, however, that Nintendo at some point in time makes a more challenging Zelda game where enemies aren't so easy to kill and where boss battles actually are a challenge. Think how great a Zelda type Witcher 3 could be (in terms of leveling up, crafting things, challenging boss/creature fights).

Worth nothing although is a bunch of games was made for the ds based on this game engine so in a way it got a lot of sequels. But yeah the art design got some critic at the time when it was released. But yeah, personally I think a manga approach usually is good in games as you get rid of problems like the system taking up a shit load of resources just because it needs to draw every hear on someones head and stuff.
But yeah cares if I want to watch hair I watch a shampoo commercial or something like that, personally I just want to play a cool game whit great gameplay and an immersive world.
But when it comes to Zelda I prefer the more mature approach Skyward sword and the new breath of the wild uses.
Also Xenoblade Chronicles X is another game that uses a manga approach that just looks asome. In that game for example they used those resources much better by making the world incredibly alive and vibrant whit plants, enemies etc.
Could perhapse be the most "alive" open world game ever created. But yeah the new Zelda game seems to be having the same type of "alive" open world.

@isimitaiwo: Its a generational thing. If you sorted the votes for best Zelda game, you'll see that most of the Gen X gamers will vote OOT, whereas the millennials will favor WW, because they were very young when WW came out, and they were the target audience. WW was a slap in the face to the older gamers, who were shown a very high detailed Zelda tech demo and given WW instead.

@bardkieran: i have played every zelda game(major one) since NES. i played the first one around 1991,and i can tell you it wasnt slap to older gamers(windwaker),the reason people were cry over ww was because you think a mature looking game is always better than a expressive looking game.i bet you are also crying over botw. as far i am concern ww will always be remembered over twilight..be it,its animation, atmosphere and environments, the design of enemies and boss. please look at bpth games and tell which one holds up better visually.

Here's an idea, why not make the horse smaller? IMHO Wind Waker is the best looking zelda on a graphic design basis. Hard to pick on gameplay and dungeon design. My second favorite would have to be the original NES in full pixel glory. Works of art.

According to the Zelda wiki, Toon Link is an adult, so I'm a little confused when he says they couldn't make Toon Link an adult.

As mentioned, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are direct sequels to Wind Waker. All three games are listed as part of the "adult" Link timeline.

@bat725: no toon link is twelve years old. Its called the adult timline because in ocarina of time link travels seven years into the future and becomes and adult, stops ganondorf and then zelda sends him back to his own time, but the time that he saved seven years in the future continues to exist and then later toon link an entirely different character saves the world in windwaker.

@bat725: While cannonically Toon link may have been an adult going by the art style it was a very kid like depiction. So when he talks about making toon Link an adult he is most likely basing on that art style depiction and referring to the idea of turning kid looking toon link into a more clearly adult variant.
