The PS5 Is A Big Console For A Good Reason

According to some recent details, the size is due to an increased need for cooling, among possible other reasons.

When it was revealed last month, many people were surprised by the striking design of the PS5, which abandons the black box design of recent console generations for bold curves and a striking black-and-white color scheme. While it didn't take long for players to start making memes about the appearance of the console, others have noted its increased size over its predecessors, the PS4 and even the original "fat" PS3. That giant size is, according to one Sony employee, because the console generates an enormous amount of heat. With that much power comes a need to keep the system cool, and a huge case was necessary.

When one commenter asked on LinkedIn why the console is so bulky--as spotted by VG247--PlayStation's vice president of UX design Matt MacLaurin replied: "Thermals. This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme."

Now Playing: First Look at PS5 Console | Sony PS5 Reveal Event

However, there might be other reasons for the large size. A leaked patent seems to suggest that Sony is building a cartridge that might work with the PS5. Some observers have speculated that it's an external solid-state drive that will slot into the console for memory management, but there's no official word if that's the case. We still don't know how much the PS5 will cost, or the PS5's full line-up of games, but odds are likely that more details will come out over the coming weeks. Most of its announced first-party games are also not going to be ready for launch. However, it should receive plenty of third-party support out of the gate. This includes sports games like Madden and NBA 2K, and presumably the Call of Duty series. Some of these will be cross-generational releases, and certain publishers are also allowing players to upgrade for free when the newer version becomes available.

The Xbox Series X is also a huge console, but it sports a PC-like form factor that is more familiar to players. The console, like the PS5, can be placed horizontally or vertically. It doesn't look like it will require a stand to do so, however.

Hey as long as it has games, that all I care about.

It could be like the Xbox series X. And have it's greatest feature be the ability to play old games... As a next-generation console... Which is so college text book level of Ironic. So much so, that it should be an example in the official Oxford dictionary.

@illegal_peanut: lol it can play old games and new, don't see your point here, it will be able to play new games like Halo and Cyberpunk(same as PS5), just because Microsoft wants to continue to support this gen, doesn't mean next gen will only play old games lol. I like too, how Sony fanboys are all high and mighty, with their recent event and ugly looking console, yet Xbox 1st party event isn't until next month....

@bababooey12:Let me make this super-duper simple.

Xbox hasn't shown any cool next-gen games that isn't a multiplatform game (Especially from that "gameplay" event). And the biggest thing people keep talking about is the Teraflops and the backward compatibility.

Wherewith Sony all I hear is, "I can't wait to play [insert game here].", "I really want to play [insert game here].", "Did you guys see [insert game here]? It looks amazing.", "Man, that alien from [insert game here] is super cute. I hope we can play as her in the game.", and "OMG they brought [insert game here] back!? I haven't played [insert game here] in years!"

Wherewith Xbox series X all I hear is, "Teraflops", "At least it doesn't look like a router", and "I can play all my old games on it.". I didn't hear a single word about new games.

@illegal_peanut: lol Xbox's event was for third party games, hence the reason we only saw muti-plat, their next event is to show case first party, I guess your simple mind missed that lol...all I've seen about Sony ever since the event was how ugly that console design is and all the memes to go with it. The Sony event was lackluster showed off a bunch of indie titles, some first party games that won't be out for at least a year or two, followed by a ugly console. Nothing on VR, capability etc. They really didn't give much on anything. Yet, Sony fans are like oh my god best console ever, at least the PS4 sold more consoles blah blah lol.....

@illegal_peanut: wut. There’s nothing “ironic” about backwards compatibility. Sony would need it too for me to consider ps5 as my main console.

@Bamda: Come on dude, people arent buying the new console to play old gmae. Theyre buying it to play the new ones while ALSO being able to play old ones and ones they may have missed, this shit is crazy. Because if sony ever says you can play ps1-3 games again, I guarantee people will be all about backwards compatibility all of a sudden after they’d spent years trashing it.

The rumors were all true...Sony wasn't prepared at all.

Series X More Powerful, More features, Better console design and the one with the best value for customers thanks to Full Backwards Compatibility, GamePass, Smart Delivery and Cross-Gen Functionality.

You could say the same about the last generation of consoles and we all know how that turned out. You and your kind are just sold on the sizzle not the steak. LOL

I don't play TFLOP I play games, and Sony has been making better games for a generation.

@johnny0779: Sony’s prepared. Series X is better hardware and has backwards compatibility and controllers without consumables, so much better, but all of that was true of one x versus pro mind Sony doesn’t care.

@johnny0779: They were sufficiently prepared. Xbox has more horse-power but you're acting like we're comparing an X1X to a PSX or something lol. For anyone playing at 1080p (ie, most folks) It's not gonna make much difference.

Xbox will no doubt be playing at the highest resolutions and framerates, but nothing short of a redesign of the entire system will let the XSX do the things that Sony's 1st party is going to accomplish with that 9Gb/s speed. Those games are going to be the high-mark of this generation because of it.

I'm without a doubt grabbing an Xbox because of that power, backwards compatibility, and game pass - but you'd have to be high af on crack to dismiss the significance of the speed in the PS5.

Let's also not forget about exclusives. I personally love Forza Horizon, and my wife adores Halo so we're set there - but a super duper powerful Xbox isn't really gonna hold much value for someone who's favorites are things like God of War and Horizon.

So maybe instead of acting like we have to be on the 'winning' side we can just recognize what makes each system awesome, and acknowledge that both sound pretty fucking great, eh?

@skyhighgam3r: lol once again someone who thinks that the SSD is going to make Sony better, as for your exclusives argument when is the next God Of War coming out or Horizon? You guys have two worthwhile exculsives coming out. That's it the rest will most likely be a year or more away..I will agree though both consoles should be a win, on both sides. The issues for the Xbox Series X will fall with the developers, as Microsoft allows them to do pretty much whatever they want.

@skyhighgam3r: Yes, most probably do by now. 4 or 5 years ago no, but now yes. You can get a good Sony 65 HDR 4K for like $1000 or even less. LG OLED tvs are selling for like $2500 now back 4 or 5 years ago they were running $3500 plus. 4k tvs are a lot more affordable now, willing to bet a lot have made the transition over.

@bababooey12: If you think most people are dropping A GRAND on a TV, let alone 2,500, you are completely out of touch. Get out of your tech-head bubble. A lot of people have 4K sets, but MOST - the majority - are still on 1080p. Just deal with it.

@skyhighgam3r: lol right now most probably aren't buying tvs, you know with the covid-19 going on, but pre-covid sure. Lol you can also get 4K HDR tvs for even around $500. The point is 4k HDR tvs are very affordable, so while you seem to think most are still stuck on 1080p, most have made that switch, especially those that are probably gamers..yea I wouldn't expect the grandma down the street to have switched to 4K, but if you are a gamer, plus big movie watcher, why wouldn't you get a 4K, especially with how AFFORDABLE they are today. People will spend a 1000 plus on a new phone, but you don't think they would get a 4K tv lol. People have no problem spending thousands a year on cigarettes lol but wouldn't get a tv. The fact you think most are still 1080P, shows how naive you are lol.

Yet the older consoles also had thermal issues. Modern CPU/GPU are not nearly as power hungry and don't need to be as hot. Seems to me Sony has some design issues....

@nargg: new die processes give you the same performance for less power, but new consoles obviously aren’t going for the same performance. Both series x and ps5 are (as always) pushing things to get more power.
