Star Wars: Squadrons Has A Space Combat Campaign And Multiplayer With No Microtransactions

The Star Wars dogfighting game has an original story and a multiplayer mode with cross-play across PS4, Xbox One, PC, and VR.

After confirming that a leak on the Xbox website was legitimate last week, Electronic Arts has officially announced Star Wars: Squadrons. Described as an "immersive, first-person space dogfighting experience," Squadrons is scheduled to release on October 2 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC for $40. The game will also be playable in virtual reality on PS4 and PC, though EA did not specify which headsets will be supported beyond PSVR, nor did it say if it will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X.

While EA is officially announcing the game today, the company is holding back the first gameplay footage until EA Play 2020 today, June 18. [Update: The first Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay has premiered at the event, and it looks very impressive. We've also gotten further details on why Squadrons locks you to first-person and other interesting tidbits as part of our Play For All interview with Motive's Ian Frazier.]

Now Playing: Star Wars: Squadrons - Official Reveal Trailer

Squadrons is developed by Motive Studios in association with Lucasfilm, and it will feature a dedicated single-player mode, and multiple multiplayer modes with no microtransactions.

"We created this game for every Star Wars fan who has ever dreamt about soaring across the galaxy in their favorite starfighter," Motive Studios creative director Ian Frazier said in a statement.

In multiplayer, you play as a starfighter pilot who will control a number of the "iconic" New Republic and Imperial ships. Together with four others in your squad, you'll take part in "strategic" multiplayer space battles. The end goal in the Fleet Battles mode is to take out the other team's flagship. Another mode, Dogfights, challenges players to work together to take down as many enemy ships as possible.

Squadrons will feature "rich" cosmetic and game-affecting customization options. Players will earn these cosmetics through gameplay exclusively, EA said. That's an important distinction to make, in part because Star Wars: Battlefront II was heavily criticised for its microtransactions.

Players will unlock new weapons, hulls, engines, and shields as they rank up. The cosmetic items, meanwhile, can be applied to your cockpit and ship exterior, while you can also change the look of your fighter pilot. Squadrons will take players to "never-before-seen" parts of the Star Wars galaxy, including Yavin Prime and Galitan.

Squadrons features cross-play between PS4, Xbox One, PC, and VR, so you can play with friends no matter what platform they are on. It marks another cross-play game for EA, following the recent addition of the feature to Need for Speed Heat.

In terms of the single-player story, it's set after the events of Return of the Jedi, during the final days of the Empire and the beginning of the New Republic. The game tells an "original" story, but the press release announcing the game did not say if it is officially canon.

More specifically, Squadrons takes place after the Battle of Endor when the Rebels destroyed the Death Star II. The story is told from multiple perspectives. In some missions, you'll play as a pilot who flies in the New Republic's Vanguard squadron; the other is a pilot for the Empire's Titan squadron. Both are customizable.

In total, EA is promising an "authentic story" that features a "diverse cast of original characters." There will also be cameo appearances from "familiar faces," and based on the trailer, those include Wedge Antilles and Hera Syndulla.

Pre-orders for Star Wars: Squadrons are available now. Squadrons is not a full-price game; it will cost $40 USD. EA and Origin Access subscribers can play the game for 10 hours at launch for free, after which they can buy the full game for 10 percent off. Origin Access Premiere subscribers, meanwhile, will get the full Squadrons game at no extra cost. You can also pre-order on the Xbox and PlayStation digital storefronts, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and major retailers starting today.

5 vs 5... well its close to my wish of 500 vs 500. honestly even 50 vs 50 would have been more than cool. but 5? not even 8 per side was doable even if 16 player match has been the base standard ever since year 2000? what?

the one thing i need to know now is how many ai pilots there are? if its also like 10 per side then this is just epic fail. space battles with 30 aircrafts flying in space... probably to keep things even a bit intense the play area is also limited to one squaremile after which magic missiles destroy deserter ships

or is the whole point of this to give some superhero feeling and have the space filled with non-intelligent targets and the one who shoots thr most wins.

but at leas5 i have some interest in the game so kudos there

They should release the single player version separately at a cheap price.

I love how "no MTs" is now a noteworthy selling feature.

@Barighm: im waiting for the uproar of people who demand mts in games. based on all things i keep hearing business figureheads saying there is a huge group of people who have no patience and want buy all instantly or want 15 million customization options. to them the words no mts means no buy

i mean i can understand mts if the base game has 500 armor pieces or somethinf and after launch some artist is kept to make 1 armor option per week or so meaning its actually extra

Seeing as Motive made the atrocious campaign of Battlefront 2017, I am very skeptical about this. If Criterion or the defunct Factor 5 made this, I would be more optimistic. I am sure they are literally stripping the Squadron play from BF 2017 and just making it a separate package to sell. EA's track record for SW games isnt that good since 2015 (besides Fallen Order).

@tman08: The flying portions of BF2 was the best part of the game. I'm totally cool if it's just an expanded version of that.

These games sound great in theory, but in most cases, the execution gets clunky. Will spaceship customization be as simple as the car customization systems in NFS?

Will we be able to quickly download designs created by others, from the internet and apply them on my own?

Will there be any proper missions, or the game will focus more on multiplayer?

These are some key questions.

@attirex: better go buy a good vr kit and a big storage of food then. then just barricade in home and play until either the food ends or the internet/electricity architechture collapses. we can even bet on whichever happens first

Super excited! I've always wanted another Rogue Squadron game.

That being said, DO NOT PRE-ORDER this, or any other game.

My hope would be that you can land and get out of the Ship and move around the Hanger, interact with other characters etc as this would break the monotony, maybe between each 'Mission' etc you know... land get out, have a walk around, maybe go to the next mission briefing and so on..

I am afraid the single player mode/campaign will be lackluster and all future updates will be multiplayer centric

If this gets at least close to the old Tie Fighter / X-Wing games but with better graphics it will be amazing. The campaign/story mode was excellent.

Not getting too hyped about it as people being asking for this for ages and so far nothing, we'll see!
Fingers crossed!

I think you mean they didn't say enhanced for PS5 or Xbox series X as in both cases the game will automatically work on the new consoles regardless it is just being EA most likely you will have to pay for any upgrades they decide to do if you don't buy it within a set timeframe.

As a veteran of X-Wing and TIE Fighter I have zero interest in this. The only reason to not make a singleplayer game is to rake in that loot box money. They need to ask fans what they want instead of just churning out crap. Dump EA already.

@Wraith3:

A) There will be a single-player mode

B) There will be no loot boxes

C) I'm sure EA needs the advice of random internet commentors who can't bother to read the headline of an article

D) Many, many people like multiplayer games, you don't have a monopoly on the series because you're a """veteran"""

Do. NOT. Trust. EA.

Why are so many always surprised when EA abuses them every time they give the company another chance? They’re that boyfriend that says they’ve changed and people always believe them.

@rawkstar007: why is "trust" even a factor in this? If it comes out and is good then buy it, if not don't. Nobody should trust any corporation ever, doesn't mean they can't make a good product on occasion.

@icing: That is true but the thing is to wait and see how it flows first and do not buy on impulse. Wait for any playthrough, multiple reviews and if their will be an limited free play.

@rawkstar007: EA isn't always all bad. When they completely screwed up on Battlefront 2 they owned up to it and fixed the game. The game how it is now is a fantastic game.
Not to mention that Anthem was a horrible launch mess and is actually getting a full remake with a new company. EA is like many large companies which at some point do **** up as it's going to happen. Don't think there is any big game company that has not fucked up at some point. I mean you got Blizzard who went from a fantastic game company to shitting on their fans. Then you got Ubisoft who's known for insane downgrades on graphics from E3 events. Hell, you got Riot Games which because of League made them one of the most well known companies out there. They have major sexism issues and other problems yet League is still one of the most played Mobas ever made.
