Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off Actor On The Impact Of Director Swap

"He wanted us to be comfortable with our vision."

When Ron Howard took over directorial duties from Chris Miller and Phil Lord on the upcoming Star Wars spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story in June last year, it was reported that there were only a few weeks of principal photography remaining. However, Howard continued to film for another four months, leading to rumors that he was was reshooting the majority of the movie.

Now Lando actor Donald Glover has commented on the issue and stated that despite the lengthy production, little about the film altered after Howard came on board. "It didn't really [change]," he said during the Television Critics Association press tour. "I think we were never faced with anything like that and [Howard] did a good job of coming in and didn't want us to change what we were doing at all. He wanted us to be comfortable with our vision."

Glover also spoke his excitement about being on the Solo set, and hinted at one of the moments that Howard directed him in. "I remember going on set one of the first times. He was like, 'Yeah, I want to follow you onto the Millennium Falcon and do this thing. I was like, 'I don't think I've ever seen the outside go into the inside.' He said, 'Yeah, no one's ever don't that shot.' As a fan I was really excited. I know there's been a lot of talk in the press about this movie, but, for me anyway, it was a dream and also it looks really cool to me."

Glover isn't the first Solo actor to deny that a lot of the movie was reshot. In November, Thandie Newton stated that, "Ninety percent of my stuff is with [Lord and Miller]. And it certainly wasn't about, 'Oh we have to start again and do it all over.'"

Nevertheless, the scale of the reshoots meant that at least one role had to be recast, with Paul Bettany replacing Michael K. Williams. Bettany himself commented in the issue recently, and said that Howard "reshot a lot more than was originally intended."

Last week, Howard tweeted a new image from the movie. As with most of pictures that the director has released it doesn't reveal much, but it does suggest that Han might pilot a new vehicle--possibly some form of speeder.

Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Emilia Clarke also star. It hits theaters on May 25, 2018.

If Disney hired a new director then they obviously were trying to change the movie, so what Glover is saying doesn’t seem to be the truth.

@pj80: Because you know more than an actor involved.

It really took me by surprise how good the recent 3 Star Wars movies were, but with this (Solo), I really have my doubts... I'm gonna see it day one, since Lucasfilm earned my trust again after the atrocious prequel trilogy, but I'm definitely keeping my expectations in check with this director change and other production problems. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised again though, we'll see how it turns out.

@Elranzer: yea I’m surprised they didn’t make it December to begin with. TLJ would’ve been a great time to show even just a teaser but the timeline is starting to feel a little tight around the collar

With this set to release in May I think its going to put some audiences off star wars especially after The Last Jedi. I still don't know if I can be bothered seeing this one in cinemas.

@gamingdevil800: Not to mention, Avengers: Infinity War is also gonna be a major hit this May. Before TLJ hit theaters, everyone was asking this, who the hell ask for Solo movie? This is one of those SW spin-offs I'm not excited to go see.

@davillain-: They haven't really wow'd me so far with the spin offs. I mean Rogue One was pretty good but the whole concept of that movie wasn't overly exciting to me.

@gamingdevil800: Na be fair compared to the prequels TFA and Rogue one were pretty decent. TLJ made me realize how amazing TFA is by comparison.

@Bread_or_Decide: Agreed, take away the TLJ's title and all the preconceived notions of what a Star Wars film is supposed/expected to be and look at it objectively and it's head and shoulders above most Star Wars films. Honestly most Star Wars films aren't good movies by conventional film standards, it's just Star Wars so everybody loves it. I found the TLJ to be a breath of fresh air that wasn't afraid to take some risks and I applaud it for that, even if some scenes didn't hit the note *cough* leia's scene *cough*. This is coming from a lifelong fan btw.

@Bread_or_Decide: Or it will be forgotten like the prequels. Awkward though as it's in the middle of a new trilogy.

@jonsin1459: Empire was also hated when it was first released. Now it's beloved. I don't trust people who only watch something once, overreact, and then rage on the internet about their one view opinion.
