Red Dead Redemption 2's Release Window Doesn't Matter, Take-Two Says

"Consumers are consuming entertainment year-round now; they don't stop in the summer months."

The holiday season is usually a popular time for new game releases, but history has shown that games, or consoles for that matter, don't need to launch then to enjoy success. In an earnings call today, Take-Two president Strauss Zelnick said this is also true for Red Dead Redemption 2.

"For a title like this, I don't think the launch window really matters," he said when asked about a potential summer 2018 release for the highly anticipated action game.

No Caption Provided

Zelnick pointed out that 2010's Red Dead Redemption was released in May, and it went on to become an "extraordinarily successful" game for Take-Two.

"Red Dead Redemption went out in May and was an extraordinarily successful title," he said. "Consumers are consuming entertainment year-round now; they don't stop in the summer months. We believe that if you give people an extraordinary experience, they will show up for it."

Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced with a Fall 2017 release window, but yesterday, Rockstar announced a delay to Spring 2018. Delays are nothing new for Rockstar-developed titles, as the original Red Dead Redemption was also delayed, while GTA V was pushed back as well.

For more on Red Dead Redemption 2, here's the reason why Rockstar delayed it.

I don't mind waiting, but I'm not a fan of Rockstar always delaying games. Yeah, the release doesn't matter when we're talking about huge games like Red Dead or GTA, but that also means there should be no reason to delay them. Just release them when they're done, or at least pick a date when you're certain you can deliver. Fallout 4 is a perfect example of how Rockstar should probably be releasing their bigger titles. Instead, they keep using that old method of building up a game that doesn't need to be built up. They give us a BS release date and then we wait for the inevitable delay. The process is the annoying part. Happens every single time and it's completely unnecessary.

"Delays are nothing new for Rockstar-developed titles, as the original Red Dead Redemption was also delayed, while GTA V was pushed back as well"

It's hard to overstate how hard you missed the mark on this statement. Virtually every game Rockstar has developed and/or published in the 21st century has been delayed. Max Payne 3, LA Noire, GTA Episodes, Beaterator, Chinatown Wars, Midnight Club LA, GTA IV, Manhunt 2, Bully...hell, I'm tired of typing them and I'm only back to 2006.

Polygon wrote an article about it yesterday and even they didn't cover everything: https://www.polygon.com/2017/5/23/15677612/rockstar-games-delayed-red-dead-redemption-2

I wonder if they said the same thing about stocks taking a hit when the delay was announced.

How about porting Red Dead Redemption to PC/PS4/XONE so we have something to play while we wait.

The correct statement is "the release window doesn't matter for Rockstar." Rockstar is in a special place in the industry where their brand is strong enough that they can release their game and practically be guaranteed massive success. For everyone else the release window matters for a variety of reasons. Rockstar is just one of the exceptions to the rule (up there with Bethesda and certain Nintendo titles).

@Celiria_Rose: It's because Rockstar creates really great games that are pretty much timeless compared to all the yearly sequels most other big publishers focus on. It doesn't matter when they release their games because they don't have to take advantage of holidays to get people to buy their 327th sequel, people buy them because they're great games, no matter what season it is.

GTA5 is still selling really well, too, which you don't see too much with the yearly COD games simply because there's no reason to buy last year's game if there's a new one out already. If you're relying on yearly sequels then of course you have to make sure to maximize profits in the first year as you can't expect much after that.

I was thinking the same, for sure it will be an 18 in Europe. Kids shouldn't be getting it for Christmas anyway in theory.

Having said that I know lots of parents that get kids CoD for Christmas

Been gaming since the 2600, still can't figure out why they think the summer is such a terrible season. Even as an adult with a family, I find myself having more time to enjoy gaming during this time of year, as well as bit more free cash.

@FallenOneX: They figure it's a bad season because a lot of people are doing outdoorsy things rather than staying inside and playing, as opposed to seasons with crap weather where you prefer to stay inside. They also figured that people are less willing to spend in the summer when they have to pay for vacations/outings/etc, as opposed to autumn/winter when there is a very "buy everything" mentality (especially around the holidays).

@sellingthings: Exactly!!! At least 2.5 hours of my time are freed up to play games a day (if I watch that many episodic shows live). No Agent Carter this Summer means more time for gaming.
