No, You Don't Need to Pay for Xbox Live on Windows 10

It might not come as much of a surprise, but Microsoft has now officially confirmed that you will not need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access online multiplayer when the service comes to PC via Windows 10 later this year.

An Xbox Live Gold subscription ($60/year) is required on Xbox 360 and Xbox One to play games online and to take part in some sales and other promotions.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb confirmed the news this week. On Twitter, Hryb said: "Not charging. Xbox Live Gold will not be required for online multiplayer gaming using our service on Windows 10 PCs and Phones."

Xbox Live for Windows 10 was announced during a January Microsoft event. Many of the Xbox Live features already available Xbox, including chat, friends lists, and the Activity feed, will also be available on PC. In fact, some PC gamers can already try out these features, provided they are part of the Microsoft Insider testing program.

When it launches later this year, Xbox Live for Windows 10 will also support Xbox-to-PC streaming, cross-platform play with Xbox One, and GameDVR. Windows 10 is set to launch sometime this fall, though a specific launch date has not yet been announced.

Xbox one isn't useless. It's still a 1/3 of a price of a gaming rig. there's lots of ppl that don't want to pay $1500+ to play games. You'll just be able to play your games on both formats with the same license and play cross platform if you choose. The PC version will have better graphics, but the console version will still work.

<< LINK REMOVED >> you don't have to spend $1500 to play games on s PC. you can get a $400 $500 to play games on medium settings. and still look as good as on console. if you don't know how to build one. Look into someone that can help build it for you.

The last one, although there's no info that all XOne exclusive will come to PC, you'll most likely have to use one of their proprietary Xbox apps (basically DRM) in order to play these game. Kinda like GFWL, and I'm not going back to that again.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> No, that's not likely at all. Is there a non-proprietary app anyway? Unlike the Steam DRM, it's integrated into the OS so won't really require you start a program.like Steam.

How do you know it's not likely? There are hints of that all over this article. If me adding the word "proprietary" upsets you, I'm sorry. There's Steam, there's Origin, Uplay, and I would really hate to open yet another crap DRM software in order to play a game. If it's integrated in the OS, which I doubt (it's probably pre-installed, or not even), that doesn't mean you don't have to open it in order to play the game. But you couldn't figure that out by yourself, you don't know how processes work, do you? What did you even want to point out? That you're a Microsoft fanboy and that you hate Steam?

You still need an XBOne to stream games, and it is streaming FROM an XBOne only.

The SC2 custom game I just played reaffirmed my belief that, despite being the best gaming platform in a lot of ways, PC is home to the absolute worst community of gamers.

In a console game it's actually possible to go online and have fun!

as the man said you're generalising, I find it far more the case on my PS4 than my PC. I rarely play a game on console where I don't have to mute some 12 year old kid that's in love with the sound of his voice, I can't remember the last time I had that problem on PC. The PC community generally consists of an older crowd, because gaming PC's aren't cheap, as console only gamers like to point out.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, the PC crowd is generally older, and it may be for that reason that I find it to be so much more hostile and less fun to play with.

I'll gladly endure a 12 year old's ranting about how he's slept with my mother over PC players who go ballistic when they perceive that I'm not performing up to their standards. << LINK REMOVED >> put it best, PC tend to act like "wannabe esport pros".

It's sorta like if you're playing a recreational sport that's supposed to be just for fun, but other players ruin it with their aggressive, win-at-all-costs attitude.

I wasn't generalizing I was speaking from my experience. The PC community is older but they act the most childish by far, since everyone thinks they some wannabe esport pro.

It's the reasons I don't play mobas. I like the game but the community is so garbage it ruins the game for me.

I game on PC and console, but I mostly plat rts games on PC.

<< LINK REMOVED >> COD players are an abundance regardless of platform.

Besides I've played all 4 of the platforms and only on a Nintendo are you allowed to play non-competitive. Whereas on the PC,PS4, X1 gamers are not there to hold your hand.

Don't expect warm welcomes in a FPS game regardless of platform if your terrible, that's just a fact.

I dunno I find the PC crowd the most toxic, then the playstation crowd and then the xbox live ppl. It's different from game to game though definitely.

I love all these people who can't read going on about how you basically never have to get an Xbox One now. The whole idea is you can only do this if you HAVE an Xbox One. Derp.

Why would they stop making consoles? There's still a market for them. What you are going to say goodbye to is underpowered consoles, especially after all the 1080p/less powerful system stuff that fave Sony a huge lead in sales. There's plenty of ppl that would buy a prefab gaming rig in the $700 range I'm sure of it. No it wouldn't be marketed to the hardcore master race crowd, but it would sell to ppl that don't like building pcs or don't want to, or console gamers looking to ease into PC gaming which is pretty much all there is once windows 10 drops.

Console gamers that like xbox will buy the box anyway however for anyone else o the fence or for me as a "hybrid gamer" really, after this is implemented I'll just end my gold subscription and go all pc and ps4 (and maybe wii u). It'll render my xbox one completely useless.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> There is no need for steam today really. There are plenty of alternatives. The reason steam is popular is because steam actually is good.

I hope they are invested though on pc as they have tried before with GFWL wich was god awful, didn't offer anything not already available on other services and inferior to steam in every possible way. And they never improved or updated it past what was it... 2009 or so.
If it is an alternative to steam that is a good thing for both steam and xbox. Competition is good.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> And streaming from xbox to pc will still render my xbox completely useless (except to play the few exclusives that won't go to pc) as it is something I'll never do. The major perk of consoles is to sit on the couch, using the big screen and soundsystem. If I want to game on my pc I'll actually use my much more powerful pc instead of using weaker hardware to deliver my gaming to a more uncomfortable area of my house. That makes no sense at all.
And we have multiple tv's so someone else wanting to watch tv is not an issue for me.
Streaming from pc to the xbox is a much better option if it could manage that at full HD/60fps. Because then I could combine the use of an open vastly more powerful platform with the comfort of livingroom gaming without the hassle of having a huge tower and desk in the livingroom.

I hope MS implement that function as both Valve and Nvidia is coming out with streaming tech for gaming from pc to tv. That would be another use for the xbox for "hybrid gamers".
As for the few exclusives that won't go to pc I can still play those without gold and if there is any of them I want to play online I can just buy a month for that game.

I don't care what your reasoning for not using said options is, it absolutely does not make the Xbox useless. For one, it eliminates the need to pay for Xbox Live if you choose to play your Xbox games via stream to your computer, that alone is a great thing.

Just another big reason why not to get the xbox 900p trash system.. LOL.. Love how ms is constantly trying to phase out their own failure of a system. First they put their exclusives on pc the btter platform, then they make it cross party chat and play so us pc people can massacre the few xboners left, then they give us xbox live free.. LOL.. if that is not a sign that the company wants to kill off their own system I got no idea what will be. At least nintendo has stuck with their failu..

Because steam OS is free and windows cost's quite a lot unless it's OEM, and if you're only planning on using it in a console to play games on, it does the job.
