New Ready Player One Trailer Features Overwatch And Street Fighter Cameos

A new trailer for Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg's big-screen adaptation of Ernest Cline's popular novel, has been released. As with the first teaser, the video is littered with references to pop culture, and video games are represented by Tracer from Overwatch and Street Fighter's Chun-Li.

They appear very briefly, hidden among the many fictional characters running into battle at the one-minute 59 second mark. Ryu, another Street Fighter character, can also be seen wandering down the freeway right at the start of the trailer. Beyond the video game characters, there's plenty of other recognizable pop culture icons to keep a look out for. Check out the trailer above.

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan as lead character Wade Watts, a teenager that enters a virtual reality world called Oasis in an attempt to find three "Easter Eggs." These are left by Oasis' eccentric creator, and whoever finds them will receive a life-changing amount of money as well as control of the virtual world itself.

Spielberg previously admitted that while Ready Player One will stay true the novel's reliance on nostalgia for the 1980s, there would be one major omission. "I've cut most of my movies out," he said. "Except for [Back to the Future's] DeLorean and a couple of other things that I had something to do with. I cut a lot of my own references out.

"I was very happy to see there was enough without me that made the '80s a great time to grow up. I think one of the reasons I decided to make the movie was that it brought me back to the '80s and lets me do anything I want. Except with my own movies."

Of course, as indicated by the inclusion of Overwatch's Tracer, the movie is also drawing on more recent sources for its pop culture reference.

Ready Player One hits theaters on March 30, 2018. It was originally scheduled to be released at the end of 2017 but was moved to avoid a clash with Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The movie also stars Olivia Cook, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, TJ Miller, and Ben Mendelsohn.
