New PlayStation VR Preorder Stock Sells Out in Minutes [UPDATE]

"Summer wave" of new units sell through rapidly.

[UPDATE] GameStop sold through its entire allocation of PlayStation VR preorder units "within minutes" of becoming available at 7 AM PT, a representative told GameSpot. Sony has said there will be no more units available for preorder anywhere; you can buy one when they go on sale in October.

The original story is below.

Looking to preorder PlayStation VR headset ahead of launch in October? Good news, as Sony today announced that there will be a "summer wave" of devices available to preorder at GameStop, starting tomorrow, June 30, at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET.

Supply is "limited," Sony said in a PlayStation Blog post. Additionally, this will be the last time Sony opens preorders. "If you miss out, we will have product available in retail stores nationwide at launch," the company explained.

No Caption Provided

If you're interested, you'll want to bookmark this GameStop page. It's unclear, however, if the standalone headset ($400) or the Launch Bundle ($500) or both will be available. We'll report back in the morning with more details about supply and availability.

As announced previously, the Launch Bundle (pictured above) comes the virtual reality device itself, as well as a PlayStation Camera, which is required to use the virtual reality headset.

Also in the package are two Move controllers and a PlayStation Worlds game disc. This includes five games: The London Heist, Into the Deep (working title), The Luge, Danger Ball, and Scavenger's Odyssey.

If you miss out on this upcoming preorder wave, your next shot to buy PS VR will be when the device goes on sale starting on October 13. Recently, however, Sony warned that there will likely be shortages.

"We have growing confidence that we'll be supply constrained with this product, but we'll do our very best to meet demand," PlayStation president Andrew House said earlier this month. "Virtual reality is a medium that's in its infancy. With such a nascent, very new form of storytelling, it's difficult to predict what user uptake is going to be."

In other recent news about virtual reality, a movie depicting the story of Jesus Christ is coming to devices such as PS VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.

I pre-ordered my core PSVR a few months ago,and I cannot wait for Oct 13th. I really want to see what wacked out stuff the Japanese developers will come up with for VR. There is supposed to be a Hatusme Miku VR concert in production. I am hoping for No Man Sky VR, and i am looking forward to Adrift, Eve, ST Bridge Crew, Battle Front X-Wing ( not sure how long this is but looks fun), Rigs (Im not good at shooters), and I am hoping for some nice relaxing environments just to sit in and listen to music (winter is long, dark, and cold in Canada.). Is there a Gamespot group yet for PS VR would love to play with some Gamespot or Giantbomb users in VR on the 13th.

Man I can't wait. I might be more excited for vr movies than games. Just sucks I'm likely going to have to camp out at a store to get one.

It's great they sold so many for the future of VR, however if they have low retention it may do more damage than anything.

"With such a nascent, very new form of storytelling, it's difficult to predict what user uptake is going to be."

So the shortage is due to Sony not wanting to produce too many? Hmmm...

@csward: Its a $4-500 add on, of course its low production. They want to hit the sweet spot where there's hardly any extra that way they don't get stuck setting on a ton of expensive inventory.

@csward: yeah sounds like it. They don't wanna just have a bunch sitting on shelves that no one wants. They'd have to eat that loss. Something like the Disney infinity problem. Over produced and undersold.

@ALLIAMOS: VR cable lolPeeC = $2000 every 6 month, upgrade in 8 years console life cycle = $40000, Occlus= $600, Vive = $800, $200 a mouse, $250 a keyboard, total $450000+ for low quality VR early access trash that will never release. PeeC gaming online = play with hackers and 34 total online population pre game... yeah wise investment decsion, and nice try pretending PeeC gaming still exist.

@ALLIAMOS: Hasn't ps4 been $349 for quite a while now?... and for me it'll be $400 for psvr since I have the other required stuff. Why are pc gamers so adamant about getting others to buy a PC? Is there a shortage of players or something?

@Alphaj9: and high end keyboard and mouse, plus a good 4k screen can set you back easily on those 400usd, most PC users cant understand that not everyone wants to deal with the whole having a pc thing. some of us look for inserting a cd and play right there for a while, i've owned videogames all my life, but now im an adult, got things to do and gaming altho its still a big part of my life, i simply dont got enought time to commit to a high end pc.

@ALLIAMOS: Why would you buy 3 PS4 systems exactly? And who buys there PS Plus Subs 5 years at a time? And calling a $1000 gaming PC great is more than puffing a little, it's a lie as your going to need a top card, processor, ect. to play VR games. Sorry guy, this is a VERY biased comparison...

@ALLIAMOS: Huh? No no no, this is completely wrong comparision. Why you are comparing 3 consoles VR and PSN subscritpion against cost of one PC? it does not make sense.

Option 1. PS4 400 + PSVR 500 + 5 year plan 250 = 1150 vs 1000

Option 2 PS4 S 400 + PSVR 500 + 5 years plan 250 = 1150 vs 1000

Now

PC cost 1000 + Oculus Rift 599 + PC Monitor 299 = 1898 vs 1150

PC = FREE Online, Cheap games. If you on average buy 10 games a year this annual cost of $312 [if you pre order at special price] you can also buy super cheap during STEAM sales.

PS4 = cost of 10 games. = 625.30

so annual game cost 625 for PS4 and 312 for PC.

PC Saving $313 a year x 5 years = $1565 Saving. Take initial cost difference off and you are saving $817 by going with PC.

Not for nothing but all these people rushing to buy this new tech are sheep. Honestly people need to show Sony that they need to make games and guarantee they are going to stick with this VR shit. I want to see a list of 15 games before I commit to a pre order. Sony can put a piece of shit on sale and it will sell out in minutes. I have a very logical news flash for everyone. Just because its Sony made doesnt mean its going to be good. Basically all these people are telling Sony its ok to lie and shit all over us. Also are these pre orders for the OG PS4? Did everyone not read that this VR isnt going to run that great on OG PS4??? Where is this Neo? or did Sony go back to its lab with a pen and a pad now that MS gave its specs. LOL

@skiggy34: Wow... fanboy much? Did you not watch the E3 conference? 50 titles will be out by the end of the year and over 200 in production. And VR isn't all about just gaming. MS is desperately trying to jump on board with VR as one of the reasons for scorpio. And Sony has said how many times now that the ps4 will run psvr. Neo might improve graphics, but the frame rate has a minimum of 60 either way.

If u don't have a good enough pc, and only a ps4...then this is alright alternative but compared to the vive and rift. It's really a gimped version of VR. 500 bucks is pretty steep when the rift only cost 600 and is way better.

@joshrmeyer: 600 dollar rift comes with everything it has to offer currently. If u want to to include the touch controllers then, the price will be higher. But that's not the point, if u have a good enough pc, then rather then spend 500 on gimped version of vr, save up some more and shoot for the vive and the rift.

PSVR is already getting a bad rep, from its dated hand controls, and bad tracking camera, and it's low fps, which is directly linked to nausea, which was big story for people trying out res evil 7 on psvr at e3, a majority got sick and nauseas.

It's fine if u only have ps4, and it ur only option but if u have the patients, don't second guess get the vive or rift.

@the-games-masta: Honestly so do I. Oculus and Vive have been out for months now and I rarely hear anyone even talk about it anymore. Sony is going to hype up this VR crap and you watch after 6 month it will be just like PS Move. I wish people wouldnt pre order this because Sony needs to feel like they did back when PS3 launched. LOST....... Seriously! I love my PS consoles and my Ps4 is ok but Sony thinks who the hell they are when people are rushing to get th elatest and greatest from Sony they know they have you all by the balls and that nothing they do wrong will bother you. I want this tech to succeed but I also want Sony to work for it a bit like MS successfully did with Xbox.

@skiggy34: The only way the tech will succeed is if people buy it... not just psvr, but at least one of the VR systems. When the numbers are high, you can bet developers will be making more and more games for it. I'm guessing the move peripheral for ps3 didn't sell well, hence the lack of support for it.

@joshrmeyer: "the only thing that will kill vr, is bad vr" oculus Co founder.

If psvr gives vr gaming bad rep, it will hurt more than just Sony, it might make consumers second guess if VR is ready and not a gimmick.
