The Story of Jesus Is Coming to VR Headsets

What will VR transubstantiation look like?

Virtual reality headsets are available to the public and many teams have begun working on projects to take advantage of the new hardware. Several interesting and strange creations have already been announced, such as a virtual tour of Chernobyl, so it seems like it was bound to happen: there's a virtual reality movie of Jesus Christ's life in the works.

As reported by Variety, Autumn Productions and VRWERX have been working on the film since October 2015, and it's scheduled for release this Christmas. It's called, unsurprisingly, Jesus VR--The Story of Christ, and it was filmed entirely in 360-degree 4K video. It was also shot at the same village in Italy that Mel Gibson's 2004 film The Passion of the Christ was filmed at. A couple people who worked on Passion are also working on Jesus VR.

The film is supposed to give viewers an immersive experience of Jesus's entire life from birth to crucifixion. Director David Hansen explained in a statement, "The viewers truly feel they are there with Jesus and his disciples. This is the most powerful story of all time and virtual reality is the perfect way to tell it."

It's coming to most VR platforms--Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Google Cardboard, and Samsung Gear VR. No price has been set for it yet.
