Microsoft Says It's Not Shutting Down Games for Windows Live

Reports of GFWL’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Many developers have been ditching Microsoft’s Games for Windows Live service in favor of Valve’s Steamworks since last year, when Microsoft confirmed it will retire its PC Marketplace. DiRT 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, and even Ms. ‘Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel, a Microsoft owned studio, are all using Steamworks now to manage achievements, multiplayer and other features.

But contrary to rumors, Microsoft insists that it is not shutting down Games For Windows Live on July 1, 2014.

“We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service,” Microsoft said in a statement to Game Informer. “As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.”

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said earlier this month that he thinks Microsoft needs to “up” its gaming presence on Windows, but stressed that Microsoft doesn't plan to compete directly with Steam. Microsoft also didn’t mention Windows and PC gaming during its E3 2014 press conference. “It's a retail show, it's a console show, so it didn't really feel like the right place for us to talk about Windows,” Spencer explained. “But Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft's success."

Well that's too bad, because I doubt they are going to make it less of a pain in the ass. That "service" that they call GFWL is quite a disservice.

I'd rather it survive until all games are ported to Steamworks, pulling the plug while other games rely on the service is bad business for everybody. It probably doesn't cost MS huge amounts of money to keep the service running as is so I don't get the furore of it being so horrible to maintain the current situation for a little while longer.

@nutcrackr I'm sure MS doesn't care about bad press, especially from PC gamers. But I genuinely believe that if you are going to make a failed attempt at an online service/DRM, and you are going to shut it down, than you should actively help developers in porting to another system.

So not a single gamer loses any game or any progress. Because if they do, that's MS responsibility, it's their DRM, it's their mess.

Instead of what they did now: "Oh, hey devs. We'll be shutting GFWL down next summer. Do with your game what you want, but if you want people to still be able to play it, you'd best remove GFWL from it. Bye !!"

"When did we say that? We never said that, ever. We never wanted to make Xbox One always online, we never wanted to stop used games, we always intended to bring a kinect-less Xbox One, Windows 8 is totally not a tablet os, we'll always support GFWL, forever and ever... and ever..."

I was so hoping for Dark Souls to go Steamworks, but now it appears that's not going to happen.

There are actually people within Microsoft's vast labyrinthine bureaucracy who believe that Games For Windows Live provides a valuable service for gamers.

Just sit back for a minute and let this sink in for a while.

@bouchart We'll seeing as how when GFWL goes down we won't be able to play the games that still use it like Dirt 2, GTA IV, Red Faction and Dark Souls, yeah, it does provide some kind of value to PC gamers...

I doubt it, they probably just haven't decided how they'll officially pull the plug on it and either way MS is known for how it supports its software for a really long time.

@DrKill09 That's not microsofts fault. They only abandoned the service and left gamers and developers in the cold because PC gamers weren't willing to pay a subscription to pay online like Xbox gamers do.

Poor microsoft :(

I never had problems with this service (unlike Origin and Uplay). Although, maybe it's because I already had a 360 and was used to the interface. I think it's a good move for them to not try to compete with Steam and probably just use its service for its own development studios.

MS just doesn't understand that a closed console environment doesn't work in an open PC environment. The more you try to control and wall off the PC world the more unhappy PC people get. Console people love living in a walled garden. PC people want to have acres of freedom. Games for Windows Live was doomed from the start because its something nobody wanted or asked for. It was MS's twisted idea of somehow morphing the PC into an XBOX and it didn't work.

@xcollector Unfortunately, you just described Steam. MS simply arrived too late with their PC walled garden because Valve already had one in place.

You know....the next time I see Microsoft and PC in the same sentence, I want to hear about a new game for PC to be released. Getting tired of them talking, and no walking. Bout's to fetch my brick...

@UnstoppableKARL For fairness sake, project spark and that indie game about a forest are coming over.

Although, to be truthful, the only game I really want from Microsoft is an Age of Empires 4.
