Microsoft Says It's Not Shutting Down Games for Windows Live

Reports of GFWL’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

No Caption Provided

Many developers have been ditching Microsoft’s Games for Windows Live service in favor of Valve’s Steamworks since last year, when Microsoft confirmed it will retire its PC Marketplace. DiRT 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, and even Ms. ‘Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel, a Microsoft owned studio, are all using Steamworks now to manage achievements, multiplayer and other features.

But contrary to rumors, Microsoft insists that it is not shutting down Games For Windows Live on July 1, 2014.

“We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service,” Microsoft said in a statement to Game Informer. “As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.”

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said earlier this month that he thinks Microsoft needs to “up” its gaming presence on Windows, but stressed that Microsoft doesn't plan to compete directly with Steam. Microsoft also didn’t mention Windows and PC gaming during its E3 2014 press conference. “It's a retail show, it's a console show, so it didn't really feel like the right place for us to talk about Windows,” Spencer explained. “But Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft's success."

That's a shame seeing as nobody likes GFWL and pretty much everyone wanted it to shut down so that developers would port most of their games to Steamworks.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype Nobody likes GFWL? For your information I love GFWL and I love it a hell of a lot more than that Steam rubbish.

Aw look, how cute - he misquoted Samuel Clemens in the subtitle. How clever. That misquote has literally never been done 100000000000000000000 times before.

I doubt they are ever implementing GFWL in any new games, you tools. This will just mean the service continues to exist and show your GFWL profile as part of your XBL profile.

There was never anything wrong with GFWL, it was just whiny Steam fanboys that need to complain about anything other than Steam. They remain ignorant to the fact that Steam is DRM itself, and it's the worst kind, always-on DRM. If you keep Steam offline for a couple of weeks, it will lock you out of your games because it requires a check-in after that time period. If there's one thing many PC gamers are, it's hypocrites, massive hypocrites.

I'm glad I can keep playing Dark Souls now since Namco Bandai didn't want to do any extra work and convert it.

@DragonessAthena Forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't Dark Souls on PC require being signed into GfWL to be able to save it?

@DragonessAthena Cuz Steam is non invasive DRM that functions in a store setting that makes sense. But then they add UPlay and GFWL on top of it, for pretty much no reason other than to screw legal gamers further. Why do I have to make two accounts to play a game I bought for single player? Why do I have to register with M$? I hate that company and M$ sure as heck didn't make Batman Arkham Asylum or have anything to do with it.

@DragonessAthena Exactly. It's been that way for 11 years. Some games literally will not let you play offline because they will insist on checking for an update once offline for more than a week - like Rome TW 2.

@DragonessAthena GFWL ruined all game that I have with it. I prefer to have full control of my games (GOG for example). DRM sucks in every aspect.

@DragonessAthena GFWL is junk. And if you think otherwise, then you haven't had to use it very much. Constant login issues, disables saving if you can't sign in to their servers, frequently drops/kicks you mid game for no apparent reason, its crash prone, adds an unnecessary layer of DRM to Steam (which is DRM, yes), as well as a multitude of other technical issues too.

@funkyzoom @bernard978 Why all the Steam hate?

I can play my games online whenever I want. I now share my 100+ library with my really good friend in NZ and vice-versa, I can change my username whenever I want (why is that a problem for you?).

The sales are quite amazing, the games valve make are amazing - DOTA, TF2, CS(support is awesome). I don't like being a 'fan-boy' but Valve seems like a pretty amazing company to me

Huh? You mean you're able to change your Steam user-name? Last time I checked (a year ago), it was not possible. Same goes for the region locking. Is this a country specific thing? i mean...do they only allow users of certain countries to change their user names or share their games outside their country?

I agree that Valve is an amazing game developer and also did a lot to uplift PC gaming through Steam, when consoles were attempting to flush out PC gaming. But I lost a bit of respect for Valve when they abandoned the Half-life franchise after ending the last game on a cliff-hanger. Of course, they aren't obliged to make more Half-Life games. But I think they at least owe to provide loyal Half-Life fans with a graphic novel or something to conclude Half-Life's amazing story.

@funkyzoom @xlord121 Valve is the type of company that cares a little too much about its consumers.

They never abandoned the half-life franchise, the simply want to make it as revolutionary as when it was first introduced.

Their attempt to make every entry into every series an absolute 10/10 means that it takes ages before a new main entry comes out.

Also, I live in Australia so maybe they consider Aus + NZ the same region or something haha.I haven't tried game sharing with any other countries but I always thought it would work.

Well based on Microsoft's history with PC + the fact that they haven't shown even the slightest hint of actual support for the PC

I just assumed GFWL shut down because I can't remember the last time GFWL Marketplace client used to download bought contents actually opened properly - it always gives an error message when signing in. It's amazing that MS can screw up a client that runs on their own OS

Hey this is great news for me! I was so close to getting 100% on the achievements for Batman AC. When Windows Live was closing down it was going to delete the saved game file and I would lose it all. But now its not. Well I hope it's not. It didn't actually state anything.

Why do people make it sound like it was so much worse than it was, at least it wasn't intrusive like Steam is.

@bernard978 "So much worse than it was" Excuse me ?

-GFWL charged you to play online

-GFWL was abandoned by MS in a terrible and buggy state because people wouldn't pay a subscription.

-They left gamers and developers using GFWL in the cold

-GFWL was not launched in so many countries, making lots of games that use GFWL unplayable for people there

-GFWL caused crashes, disconnects, bugs, making peoples games not work

Comparing GFWL to Steam is like comparing Hitler to Jesus

@bernard978

I'm beginning to get really irritated with Steam now. It imposes too many restrictions like region locks and inability to change username. The interface seems really intimidating for some reason. Steam sales now are not what they used to be. And worst of all, Steam doesn't give refunds.

I don't understand why people hate Origin so much. It doesn't have any of the problems which i mentioned above, regarding Steam. I'm not an EA 'fanboy', but I gotta admit that in general, right now Origin is better than Steam in all aspects except for the games library. Don't have much experience with GWFL, although I haven't really found it to be as horrible as people make it out to be.

Steam isn't perfect (I wish Valve would make companies remove all 3rd party DRM. Steam is sufficient), but it's the best one out there... at least for newer games. For older stuff, GOG is king.

@bernard978 It's super intrusive. It has a terrible patching system. The saves are encrypted. Many regions can't buy games with GFWL (I know a fair bit of Europe can't). It LOVES to break randomly. I haven't had too much issue with it personally but I have friends who can't even play games with it just because it refuses to work. It's arguably the worst DRM ever made right next to Starforce.

When they said they wanted to up their gaming presence on PC, I thought they meant releasing more PC games developed by Microsoft Studios... not keeping a service that just about everybody hates, alive.

These companies really do think their consumers are stupid (though some of them are I suppose): Merely saying "We will support you" isn't the same as actually supporting us. It requires actions.
