Microsoft Says It's Not Shutting Down Games for Windows Live

Reports of GFWL’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

No Caption Provided

Many developers have been ditching Microsoft’s Games for Windows Live service in favor of Valve’s Steamworks since last year, when Microsoft confirmed it will retire its PC Marketplace. DiRT 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, and even Ms. ‘Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel, a Microsoft owned studio, are all using Steamworks now to manage achievements, multiplayer and other features.

But contrary to rumors, Microsoft insists that it is not shutting down Games For Windows Live on July 1, 2014.

“We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service,” Microsoft said in a statement to Game Informer. “As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.”

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said earlier this month that he thinks Microsoft needs to “up” its gaming presence on Windows, but stressed that Microsoft doesn't plan to compete directly with Steam. Microsoft also didn’t mention Windows and PC gaming during its E3 2014 press conference. “It's a retail show, it's a console show, so it didn't really feel like the right place for us to talk about Windows,” Spencer explained. “But Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft's success."

People need to get off their high horse here. Yes GFWL is a terrible service, but the fact MS are still supporting it is a good thing, solely for the reason that there are games out there that would simply be useless if GFWL went away.

I'm happy that MS have finally broke their silence on the matter. We can now all move onto better things.

@justanumber Microsoft should have patched those games so they function without their wretched service, like any digital platform is morally obligated to do when it shuts down

But nobody wants it. We have no reason to have respect for microsoft all they have done is not listen to the fans, give us bottom of barrel releases and a terrible drm ridden service.

They just don't care at all.

@justanumber They wouldn't be useless. GFWL has no effect in-game. They could quite easily release a patch for every game on their system, that dummies the paul.dll, tricking the game into thinking it doesn't need it.

@justanumber That's not supporting, that's merely leaving it running in fear of backlash. They can shove it where the sun don't shine.

@Torico Even so, that doesn't change the fact the games can now function as intended and wouldn't do if GFWL was shutdown.

They're keeping it running because certain games still rely on it. I know it's funny to be cynical, especially towards Microsoft, but in this case you only look like a fool.

Uplay has to be the next to go. I don't understand how they can justify using BOTH Steam and Uplay. You have to enter two services to start a video game. That doesn't make sense to me.

This makes me think, maybe i should get the new Witcher game though GOG.com, DRM free, direct from the publisher, what could be better?

@biggest_loser it's because to connect to Ubisoft's online games (they pretty much all have online functions as well) you need to have a uPlay account. It's like an MMO launcher.

Removing uPlay would probably require a complete retooling of the online infrastructure that they have in their games.

Thanks MS for saving this service as some games were not going to get support away from this and thus die. Glad that is now over with for now.

Dont get why everyone is so against them not shutting it down.
This doesnt mean they are gonna use it on new games. hence the shutdown of the marketplace, they will just leave it up so people who buy these games can still play them :)

Im relieved, now i dont have to rush in to play the ones i got

@jer_1 Do you realize many other game services you buy from out there also have DRM? You can't put up with one more? Heck MS is doing people a fav here as some games were going to die completely without GFWL.

@devilzzz2014 @jer_1 This is bad DRM. StarForce died, SecuROM died for the most part, this can die too. All the games they sold are already cracked so it's not as if they'd suddenly be turning the games over to pirates by disabling the DRM.

PR doublespeak at a time they are desperate to make Xbox One gains and want to avoid negative headlines with Microsoft and gaming in the title, on account of of console buyers that may assume it has something to do with Xbox. Microsoft officially killed GFWL when the marketplace was closed and no more games could be purchased through it. That's why the "Microsoft is still committed to PC gaming" line in this new press statement is bull$hit.

Its been on life support ever since they closed the marketplace, and they simply realized now that it costs them nothing to keep the servers up a little while longer relative to the negative press it helps them avoid. The bad news is it gives more time to procrastinating developers from hurrying up and moving their titles to Steamworks.

MS is simply kicking the can down the road.

@Bowser05 @yetanotherus3r The games I had most trouble with were GTA IV, which dropped my previous offline gamertag, and Bioshock 2, which required a specific version of GFWL to operate - newer version wouldn't have it complaining about some fatal error (they patched it afterwards, but for a while I had to downgrade, cancel auto-updates, and avoid playing anything else in fear it may break my precarious setup).

I'm fine with it being still aroud, I guess, if that means I can still download and (attempt to) play the games I have there. Unfortunately that's only DIRT, since I'm locked out of anything else due to the parental control bug-thing, but god help us if they keep bundling retail games with it!

@Bowser05 @roler42 They broke when they released it. I have lost count of the number of times I lost games progress because two games used different versions of GFWL, plus the time they erased my gamertag entirely (and all of its progresses) because hey, you can't have an offline profile anymore.

Adding insult to injury, I've been locked out of it for some parental control bs. I've called support so many times that the support guy assigned to my case gave me his direct line, and after nearly a month of trying to figure out what was wrong with he just told me there was no hope and I needed to make a new account.

So, yeah, I guess I'm on team "GFWL burn in hell!"

@yetanotherus3r Wow that sucks really bad. I'm sorry to hear that. That being said, your experience and mine are quite different. I've played Bioshock 2, Arkham Asylum, Age of Empires 3 and a couple other games on there (can't remember the other 2) and I've never had any of those problems. All my games played perfectly fine. So I'm sure you can understand why I have no issues with it still being around.
