Microsoft Says It's Not Shutting Down Games for Windows Live

Reports of GFWL’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Many developers have been ditching Microsoft’s Games for Windows Live service in favor of Valve’s Steamworks since last year, when Microsoft confirmed it will retire its PC Marketplace. DiRT 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, and even Ms. ‘Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel, a Microsoft owned studio, are all using Steamworks now to manage achievements, multiplayer and other features.

But contrary to rumors, Microsoft insists that it is not shutting down Games For Windows Live on July 1, 2014.

“We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service,” Microsoft said in a statement to Game Informer. “As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.”

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said earlier this month that he thinks Microsoft needs to “up” its gaming presence on Windows, but stressed that Microsoft doesn't plan to compete directly with Steam. Microsoft also didn’t mention Windows and PC gaming during its E3 2014 press conference. “It's a retail show, it's a console show, so it didn't really feel like the right place for us to talk about Windows,” Spencer explained. “But Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft's success."

@brouhahaduty @Niner0 Because I find it amusing that a game service as bad as GFWL has survived this long. I also assumed that it had gone down the drain when all of the games I played dropped it in favor of steam (which actually was unfortunate for me in the case of Arkham City, in which I lost my save games...).

This is bad news. GFWL needs to die in a fire. I don't care if it takes all the games that use it with it, it just needs to die. also that article for dirt 3 is from Nov 2013.codemasters have not said crap about removing it from dirt 3 since than. I wish they would just hurry up and remove it and then remove it from dirt 2 since that is just a better game then put it back up on steam. hell I bought dirt 1 after i played dirt 2 because I wanted more dirt games. I'm sure there are new PC gamers that would do the same with all the old dirt games as well if they even bothered to put them up on steam again.

@Death_Masta187 I'm pretty sure they took the first Dirt off of Steam because it wasn't working correctly with Windows 7 or Windows 8 (don't remember which) and they didn't want to sell something that wouldn't work for a portion of players. Dunno why they removed Dirt 2. You can still get it on Greenmangaming I believe with a Steam key included. At least you could just a month or two ago.

@Squire_Ramza Well that's not exactly an unpopular position to take but if you just built one why would you even need to use it? Unless you're playing Dark Souls I don't know what other game you'd be playing that uses that client.

Microsoft, just kill it already! You will be actually doing us a lot of favor by completely killing this horrible service, so all the games go to Steamworks.

It's insane how the same week everyone is willing to open their wallets to be destroyed by Steam DRM filled games, everyone wants this DRM to die, for what reason? So a whole bunch of games go offline and are unplayable? Great idea... Let it live for a few more years just to keep the games that use it alive, you can't expect every GFWL game to go to Steam and some (like Street Fighter 4) actually got worse when they made the switch. Besides, they'll just have to move the Steam versions of the game when Steam dies...

I think they should make a new client. Something that can actually compete with Steam (or come close to at least). Being the rich and powerful company that Microsoft is, it shouldn't be hard work as long as they're actually willing to contribute to PC gaming.

Or of course, they could just make and port more of their exclusives for PC and that would be good enough as well.

@SaintJimmmy Right. That's why PC games are filled with DRM, while consoles aren't, with the obvious exception of requiring the disc (physical copies). We don't own our games anymore on the PC. We do on consoles.

@Jawehawk-DK @SaintJimmmy @deathstream Pretty much. The DRM nonsense that Steam has ingrained in PC has pushed me completely away from the platform outside of GOG and similar services.

What Steam fanboys don't understand is that it would be disastrous for the PC space, which has already become a raw deal, if Steam were to become a monopoly as they so fervently wish. Do they HONESTLY think their precious Steam sales would continue when customers are robbed of choice? Do they HONESTLY think that Valve wouldn't get lazy and stop caring? They're pushing Steam Machines not because they're afraid of Microsoft closing Windows, but because they want to consolidate their power in the PC space. It's why they've left consoles entirely - they can't deal with not being able to push everyone else around.

And to those who think Steam being the only choice ISN'T a bad thing, why not ask console developers who had to endure Nintendo's oppression as the Mario Machine blackballed retailers and 3rd parties who even looked at the Master System how fun that monopoly was.

More than any year previously, the PC was a forerunner at E3. This was the perfect year to talk about gaming on Windows. My thought is that Microsoft had too much to "fix" with the Xbox One this year. They couldn't take the risk (or any risk for that matter) by talking about stuff that might get them bad press if things weren't received as well as hoped. Microsoft felt it was better to make the PC fans wait.

PC really deserves to be a big part of E3 in the same way as the consoles. It's sad it has to continue to take a back seat so Microsoft can situate their console.

Microsoft is going to have to come at this hard and correct. Steam machines are coming next year. Steam is growing year over year. PC, in general has gotten a huge boost from cheaper hardware and easy configurations. If Microsoft waits too long, they will, once again, find them selves out of place and time.

Finally, Microsoft came out and said what I thought they always would. This is a good thing for us that still want to play games that use GFWL, in spite of the crappy service. It's not really a 180. The official statement has always been that the service would continue to support existing games. That didn't stop many sites from reporting it as fact based on a blurb that appeared for five minutes on the AoE site.

That said, Microsoft chose to stay silent in the midst of all the rumors. All they had to do was deny the rumor, but they didn't. I think that was done purposely, so that devs would move their games off the platform. That means fewer resources MS has to dedicate to keep the service running.

Make no mistake, GFWL is dead in terms of new games. No games have used it for the last couple of years (give or take), including those published by Microsoft. So, you don't have to worry about that. I think everything has gone according to plan in regards to GFWL, and they are currently figuring out what they want to do on PC in the future.

The problem with this approach is that MS has lost all credibility in the PC online service space. No dev would choose to use their service again. This leads me to believe (hope) that there will be no replacement for GFWL. MS will likely use Steamworks as they have for recent releases and remakes. The alternative is to focus their efforts around Windows 8, but that sounds like the old Microsoft. The mandate these days is to make money on the platforms people use, and on the PC that's Steam. If they really want to show support for the PC, they should release XBox exclusives like Halo and Gears of War on Steam. That would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

@superjenius Well I can understand the new stuff being X-box one only.

Be nice to have Gears 1 -4 halo collection (with sneak peaks of GOW 5 and Halo 5 and say only on X-BOX ONE), Kameo, etc, etc. They could also pay someone who knows how to convert consoles games properly like the chap that does the Dark Souls PC mods etc rather than the over the priced lazy programmers that give us appalling Ports (I think these guys must spend 95% of there time in the pub and rest of time converting these poor ports). Then they would have no excuse and let people get a free upgrade to X-BOX one version if they purchased it on 360 or only charge £2 for the upgrade.

MS would make millions selling all the old games on PC.

@an_advert

Well, we don't know that FROM would've used any kind of different matchmaking if the game had gone steam-works. It could've still taken ages for other player's IP's to 'drip' into your pool. They'd have to add some kind of matchmaking server to fix that, and I very much doubt they'd go that far.

VAC if implemented would be inferior to the existing PvP Watchdog which gives your more info and control over banning cheaters from your session.

And because of the way steam handles player to player messaging, the game would get more anonymous. One of the things I miss in Ds2 are those delicious GFWL rage mails and cordial exchanges with strangers.

So IMO its not all bad news GFWL is sticking around, I'm surprised it took them this long to clarify this point, as the rumors of the shutdown have become gospel since that one little line appeared on the age of empires online support site proposing a July 1st termination.
