Marvel's Avengers Leak Reveals Details Before E3 2019; More Coming At Square Enix Press Conference

Avengers reassemble.

People are very excited, but almost nothing is known about Square Enix's upcoming Marvel's Avengers game. After an unusually long wait following the initial announcement, we will finally be learning all about the game during E3 2019. Square Enix confirmed that its press conference on Monday, June 10 will be home to the official unveiling of the game, and it will also be discussed further in an E3 Coliseum panel a day later. Thanks to a mistaken listing for that panel on the E3 Coliseum website, the first real details on what to expect from the game have leaked. Here's what we know.

As is usually the case when this sort of thing happens, those Avengers details have now been removed from the site, but not before they were spotted online. The description for the Marvel's Avengers Showcase once read, according to PC Gamer, "Embrace your powers and join key members of the development team at Crystal Dynamics and the creative team at Marvel Games as they talk exclusively about the upcoming Marvel's Avengers. This is the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay. Moderated by Andrea Rene, assemble in teams up to four players, master extraordinary abilities, customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat."

Now, the showcase's description has been trimmed down to read, "Join Crystal Dynamics and Marvel Games for a Panel about Marvel's The Avengers."

Virtually everything mentioned in the now-removed description is news to us: four-player co-op and the ability to customize your character, in particular stand out as clarifying details. There's also the mention of "continuous" gameplay that could be interpreted as plans for ongoing, games-as-a-service-style support, although that's purely speculation at this point.

Announced via a January 2017 teaser trailer (seen above) as The Avengers Project, Marvel's Avengers will finally have an official reveal during Square Enix's E3 2019 press conference, scheduled for June 10 at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET (2 AM BST / 11 AM AET on June 11).

There's very little information about the game currently available, although we do know Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and Deus Ex studio Eidos Montreal are behind it. The original teaser seemed to imply the game's story would focus on the Avengers reassembling after the "time of heroes" has long since passed.

In the teaser trailer, we see Captain America's vibranium shield, Iron Man's repulsor gauntlet, Thor's Mjolnir hammer, and Bruce Banner's cracked glasses--suggesting the game could focus on the first team of Avengers (though nothing pointing to the other two original Avengers, Ant-Man/Giant-Man and Wasp is shown). Because of how damaged the shield, gauntlet, hammer, and glasses in the trailer are, the video could also be hinting that Marvel's Avengers takes place in the aftermath of the original team's defeat and see the rise of a new generation of heroes. In my opinion, making an enjoyable Avengers game should be one of the easiest things to do. It's such a license, that you can't go wrong with it--unless, of course, the people who are involved are incompetent.

All the heroes has their powers, abilities, strengths and weaknesses clearly defined over the course of dozens of movies, hundreds of comic books and what not.

How can they not make a great game?

By trying out too many things and focusing way too much on "always online money grabbing" shit.

I'm hoping to see a new set of heroes making it an unanticipated function, I might like that.

Really hope it's similar to marvel alliance 3 just for all console. They way it should be because it's the right thing to do. Unlike Nintendo Square Enix is will it in both console where it matters and not having only 1 system that is weaker. It will look so much better.

@shamatuu257: There was no Marvel Alliance 3, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 was great, but 2 was quite crappy.

@shamatuu257: Are you talking the same Square Enix who did "the right thing" by signing a timed exclusivity deal for "Rise of the Tomb Raider" with Microsoft?

@zmanbarzel: And would you have enjoyed the game more if it had release on PC 1 year sooner? I will rather play the game when it's all patched from all the gamebreaking bugs. I do like the feeling when there is something new in the game after every patch, but if it's just bug fixing and what not, I don't really care when I'm going to get to play it, rather it be later than too soon. Would you have liked Anthem to be developed few years more or are you still okay what it is now?

@maitkarro: Anthem was developed for so long yet it's still a mess. These days time isn't the big problem. It's more about multihundred people trying to work together in multiple studios while somewhere down the line someone comes up with his ideas and says let's cut that, that and that and add this, this and this.

About MUA3... eek. XML2 and MUA are in my top 10 ever, and I liked MUA2 enough to wish for MUA3 right away. But this looks like Marvel vs Capcom Infinity all over again. Looks like a Wii game, gameplay seems to have evolved none and the script and roster of characters is a total question. If they have Doc Ock, Silver Surfer, Blade, Sandman, Nova, Surtur, Dormammu etc. etc. etc. with a sensible script there's a chance, but right now this could just as well be a weaker version of first MUA1, which nailed the concept of evil team having a scheme against a super set of heroes. MUA3 shouldn't just match it, it should go way beyond. The real question is whether the Square game will beat it or no.

@shamatuu257: Honestly, it's sounds more like an arena horde game a la ME3/Andromeda's multiplayer. The multiplayer part, anyway. The core singleplayer campaign will probably just be practice for the multiplayer.

@Barighm: for me it sounded more like the twisted promise that was Anthem 2 months before release. "Look you can play solo too look look please pre-order!"

I hope this will be a game I can play online for a long time. I miss Marvel Heroes, and MAU3 looks fun, but might not have the depth I'm looking for.

@ebola9717: I agree, I would miss Marvel Heroes a lot., But I prefer how the gameplay for MUA3 looks. So hopefully it will be like Marvel Heroes but with gameplay like MUA3. 3rd person instead of Isometric.

@alex33x: Give me a really good looking Avengers game with 4 players, loot, and a 3rd person camera, and I'll play it forever. Like Marvel Phantasy Star Online.

@JackNief: The fact that Square Enix is showcasing this in front of the Final Fantasy VII remake leads me to believe they have quite a bit of confidence in it.

Just make X-Men Legends 3 for god's sake! The last good marvel game I played was MAA and it died.

@Barighm: Well no, because even the first MUA wasn't Legends 3, which is where my righteous discontent comes from. It's like Bioware and their Old Republic. This kind of catfishing must end!
