Looks Like Cyberpunk 2077 Dev May Bring An Unspecified RPG To E3 2018

Are we finally going to see more of Cyberpunk 2077?

More evidence has come to light that The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red may be gearing up to make some kind of announcement at E3 2018 next month.

The developer, which has already confirmed it will attend E3, is listed on the event's website under the "RPG" category. Based on the listing, it appears the studio has an RPG for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC to talk about during the year's biggest gaming show. You can see a screen capture of the listing below.

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Dev May Bring An Unspecified RPG To E3 2018 - GS News Update

No Caption Provided

This is far from a confirmation that CD Projekt Red will finally show more of Cyberpunk 2077 at E3 this year, but there is some reason to believe the studio might. Earlier this year, the game's Twitter account came back to life after four years of silence. If it's not Cyberpunk 2077 that gets shown off at E3, it could be CD Projekt Red's other AAA RPG that is due to launch in the 2017-2021 window. CD Projekt Red has remained tight-lipped about Cyberpunk 2077, and the studio has said absolutely nothing about this other game.

It is also possible that CD Projekt Red will talk more about Gwent: The Witcher Card Game during E3. At this point, the studio has said nothing at all about its plans for the show outside of confirming that it will attend.

Although platforms for Cyberpunk 2077 have not yet been announced, the studio has said it will "probably" come to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. While you wait for news about Cyberpunk 2077, you can check out GameSpot's new feature, "Why Cyberpunk 2077 Is So Important To The Genre And Modern Society."

E3 2018 runs June 12-14, but briefings from Microsoft, Sony, and others are scheduled for earlier in the week. GameSpot will be on the ground in Los Angeles all week to bring you all the big news and analysis from the show as it unfolds.

I knew this was an Eddie article because he calls CDPR "Cyberpunk 2077 dev" instead of their name which everyone knows.

Could just be a place holder for Cyberpunk. Then again, I've heard rumors of a game in the Witcher universe where you can make your own character.

Man, as much as I love CDPR, and as much as I love gwent, can we all agree that the gwent thing was/is the biggest troll in E3 history?

CDPR: We'll show an RPG.

Internet: OMGOMGOMGCYBERPUNK!

CDPR: Gwent!

Just plain mean. But wouldn't be surprised if they did it again.

I just can't wait to see what kind of game it is. I hear rumours about it maybe being FPS with rpg elements. Others say it's like Witcher. I'm sooooooo ready for E3.

@Jimbowesker: TW1 you can play on the weakest laptop. Do it, if you're considering yourself TW fan. No remasters/remakes.

@Vojtass: I have actually thought of this already but sadly, my PC won't hold up for a game when I have trouble just surfing the web with it. But thanks for the advice and I do consider myself a true Witcher fan thru and thru. But not everyone enjoys or is able to play games on PC. Console version or nothing for me.

@Jimbowesker: Then you aren't true fan of IP, if you refuse to play because of such trivial things. If your laptop can't handle TW1 (or web surfing), it must be a real fossil. Maybe you should consider buying new one?

I think what's really going to be a talking point in the coming months is whether or not this new IP will still be making it's debut on current gen consoles or the next crop. If I was a betting Ninja (which I'm not.) I would guess they will be using a strategy similar to GTA5 or The Last of Us.

@videogameninja: I'm not convinced there will be an incompatible "next gen" console from either player anytime in the foreseeable future. Why would they? Consoles only worked that way before because most of the hardware was custom ASICs and that simply isnt financially viable anymore. Even massive vendors like apple are at best licensing an architecture and using that (their custom chips are still ARM chips made by the same foundries that make everyone else stuff).

The current consoles are all x86 based (the switch is ARM+Nvidia based) and using AMD GPUs.

The question is, what does that extra hardware buy the gamer? Higher refresh rates? Not much use to 90% of console gamers yet (most TVs are more or less limited to 60hz regardless what they say in marketing, at least for now). 4k? 4k is pretty computationally expensive at the moment, requiring 700$ worth of GPU to hold 60fps. 2-4 years from now we might be able to hold 4k@60fps for 250-300$ in GPU power, we will see. VR? Sony has already released a VR headset that functions with the ps4pro so its unlikely they would market a new console and a new headset for the console so quickly but they might. Regardless VR is still pretty niche and still requires a pretty expensive setup for a top end experience that will really drive acceptance IMO. So any brand new console with a tiny game library will really need something special to bring players to the table (Nintendo has that with their first party software and their mobile/not mobile device). Going with just pure hardware I dont really see the jump most people would expect as being financially viable (and I just recently moved from a gtx 970 and 1st gen i7 to a 1080ti and 8th gen i7 and it took buying a 144hz monitor to really *feel* the difference in the upgrade).

So at this point I dont see any real technical or market reason for a console manufacturer to build a new console that destroys compatibility with the previous one. Since it's already been proven an effective strategy I expect both MS and Sony to stick with the new PC style of upgrade in their console family's. Even if they decide to call it a PS5 I still expect it to be an x86 design with a AMD or Nvidia GPU (because no one else makes them as fast or as cheaply as those two players do right now) and I expect it to be fully backward compatible with the PS4.

Plus, Bethesda has proven you dont even need to have a new console come out to sell the same game two or three times! You can just keep repackaging it (skyrim anyone?).

@flatovercrest: Yes, if the next console isn't backwards compatible with the current gen then whoever designed it did so purposely and maliciously.
