Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.
2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

I wouldn't be surprised in Dance Central is pushing the Kinect. I'm interested, only I don't want to shell out $200 for the game and the device. Now if Kinect bombs one day, I'll be sure to grab it out of the clearance bin.

The Kinect seems to be popular because, well, you have to give credit -- Microsoft actually brought something new to the table, instead of imitating. In other words, the full body camera is a little more innovative than bringing another hand wand to the market. Love it or hate it, it is certainly innovative.

I think Kinect just has more hype behind it than PS3's Move, and more people are interested in the hands free ability to game. I think both peripherals are neat, but I'm a little more interested in Kinect. I will probably get one before the end of the year and I'm glad to see it selling well, as long as they don't give up on the great games that got them where they are now.

If they truly make 94$ off of each kinnect sold then at 2.5 million sold they would come out with 235 million in profits, just hardware.

While this is an interesting concept, only casual gamers will benefit from this add-on. I would never want to play a FPS or basically anything other then sports games and a few puzzle games. This is not something I would ever buy because it is a 150 add on and I have a Wii. Majority of PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will not buy the motion controls stuff because most have a wii, and have the other system to play hardcore games. Haha hope no one gets that stupid animal game for Kinect, looks dumb as hell, about as dumb as that Japanese chair racing game for PS3.

If they keep reporting that Kinect only costs $56 to make and the other $94 is just a premium..someone's gonna get sued!

It's fine if Kinect is not your thing, but making fun of others who like it is just immature. It's optional so you don't have to get it.

@AncientDozer Yes, you're right. If Kinect sells the targeted 5 million, that puts the percentage of Xbox owners with Kinect at what? Less than 10%? I didn't say that to antagonize or annoy, I was just saying it because it was true. If people have fun with Kinect, then rock on :P I have nothing against the add on, I just don't know anyone with it.

@nightdrifter05 yeah that's why when ever I am at a best buy, Target, wallmart, kmart, toys r us, or meijers kinect is out and there minimum of 10 moves on the.selves I have pictures for proof. Move has barley sold here in the states. I would be supprised if move has sold 300,000 here.

I would like to reiterate that the definition of hardcore is not "sits in the dark all day" if anything the kinect users are more hardcore than the people ripping it, as they are actually trying something new and unfamiliar to everyone instead of ragging on things they've never tried.

To those saying Kinect is sealing the deal against the Sony Move then you're way off. Move sold 2.5 million in a month in just the US and UK. The Kinect sale's are worldwide total's including giveaways and promotions. Then you also have to fact the like .5 million difference in the 2 sale wise for the 1st month is about what you can expect when the 360 has about 5-6 million more consoles available on the market. I also don't know how many of you work in the game industry or own a shop if any of you do but I've already been told by Sony they are anticipating a HUGE increase in sale's this month and it may limit the amount each store can get since they want to keep the big suppliers stock up. But they are anticipating to have a complete sellout where they will only be able to produce enough units to keep up with the amount sold.

Congrats to Microsoft. Despite all the motion hate, I see potential in Kinect. Hopefully, Microsoft will use it to the fullest and not waste this opportunity.

Too bad none of the kinect games will ever play as good as any wii game. You can't beat the original motion gaming system.

Most of the 360's I see for sale are the Kinect bundles, Or it's the dumb 4gb model. When I buy a new 360 to replace the system I have already I'll be looking for a 250gb model. I was just talking about Kinect and Move with a friend and she was saying both are direct rips on Nintendo......She's right lol

Ah... You may be implying that game-makers may not be able to go around this. If you have thought about this, then they would have too, yet I doubt that they would just give up there.

Game-makers, if they had worked with the Xbox 360 for years, will know that they are reaching the limit of what they can do with a game system that has a fixed architecture. If they stay with conventional controls, they are going to hit a ceiling of sophistication (of sorts) with the games that they can make.

If I am a commercial game-maker, I would see the Kinect as a way to produce games that seem "new". It's a matter of finding the most efficient and least troublesome gestures that can replace conventional controls and fine-tuning how the Kinect recognizes these gestures - no need to overhaul the rest of a shooter game, RPG or a platformer.

Well, you've got to hand it Microsoft in this case. Even if we hardcore gamers don't (and shouldn't) give a rip about the Kinect, they're well on their way to sealing the deal against Sony's Nintendo-esque control scheme.

I'd believe a million sold the first month but unless its from a NPD report; I'm callin shenanigans on this one. 2.5 million is too crazy for this thing even if its worldwide.

I think people don't understand that Kinect isn't trying to be everything to everybody. Hardcore games will most likely stay far away from Kinect, as well they should, it's just not the right tool for the job, but that doesn't mean it isn't an amazing casual experience. If all you ever ever do is sit in a room by yourself and play games Kinect isn't for you, but get a group of people together and it shines. The Kinect and hardcore gaming can co-exist. I for one am happy I can break out some videogames for people who don't have a K/D ratio in COD and wouldn't know a guard cancel from a shmup.

@ Gelugon_baat "If Microsoft can dish out US$500 million just to promote the Kinect, why would it not dish out more to entice game-makers?" Because it's MS. They are the same ones that tried to make everyone change to Vista, then released Windows 7. They can afford to entice a few companies (Square-Enix, Take-Two) but not everyone. Even EA has taken a stance now, Mass Effect anyone???

@Sonic_pt They are making money on the software and new console bundles too. The 500 million dollar marketing is for 1 year at the very least, if it was 500 million dollar marketing only for this year, your grandmother would know what Kinect was by now. Seriously, i don't watch that much TV, but Kinect has less commercial than games like Halo and Cod. And those have like 40 million budgets tops.

@Gelugon_baat Unless Kinect comes out with a peripheral with an analog stick for it, then no, you're never going to see RPGs, shooters, or platforming games on Kinect. It will be greatly discouraged plus clumsy to hold a 360 controller while trying to do motion gestures. And Kinect itself can't support movement through a game world.

This depresses me. Now game developers will be focusing more on casuals on Xbox than hardcore gamers. This is the problem when anything goes mainstream. I liked it more when gaming was a 'nerdy' thing to do.

@inferno394
Someone please tell me how I will play role playing games, shooters, and platforming games on kinect?
Launch or close-to-launch titles are all titles to either test the market or test the game-makers' capability with making games for new devices - or at least devices with new SDKs. The launch titles for the Kinect supposedly look like HD versions of Wii games because these are the easiest and quickest 'ideas' that game-makers can come up with for now.

The Kinect may not have any hand-held device that the game genres that you mentioned have traditionally needed, but this is just a matter of controls - I don't see how designing for the Kinect will change the actual fundamentals of these game genres, e.g. a persistent list of statistics for the player character for RPGs.

Just because there aren't any games of such genres for the Kinect now doesn't mean there won't be any. Microsoft is counting on the Kinect to sustain << LINK REMOVED >>; I more than suspect Microsoft is encouraging game-makers to design games of "core" genres for the camera.

If Microsoft can dish out US$500 million just to promote the Kinect, why would it not dish out more to entice game-makers?

In the end, I think Kinect and Move are just a craze. Granted, I could be wrong, but i think it will die down and most likely be short lived till next year or so. The reason i say this is because 1) Move and Kinect still have some bugs and no games and 2) Most families already have Wiis, which is who motion gaming seems to be geared towards.
