Kinect preorders 'very low' - UK retailer

ShopTo calls for Microsoft to finalize motion-sensing peripheral at lower than widely rumored price, says customers aren't biting at current cost.

Microsoft confirmed a November 4 launch for its Kinect motion-sensing camera peripheral at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, but it didn't nail down a price for the device. Despite the lack of official word, US retailers began taking preorders for Kinect at $150, and while Microsoft declined to make the number official, it opened up its own preorders at the same price point. Now one retailer is saying that price is too high, and preorders have suffered as a result.

ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.
ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.

In an interview with Eurogamer, ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolletta told the site the number of Kinect preorders the retail chain has received is "very low." As for the pricing, ShopTo currently offers the Kinect for €153.75 ($188), while the executive pointed out that a Wii can be had for just a little more. ShopTo's online site is currently sold out of Nintendo's hardware, but the Wii Sports Resort bundle ordinarily sells for €166 ($203).

"It's too high," Cipolletta said of the Kinect price. "We believe that with this current economy it should be around £70 ($105)."

When Kinect arrives, Microsoft expects 15 games to launch alongside the device. First-party offerings include Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, and Kinect Sports. A number of third parties are also on board, developing such titles as EA Sports Active 2, Konami's DanceMasters, and Sega's Sonic Freeriders. Publishers have also promised postlaunch support, such as a Star Wars game from LucasArts, Q?'s Child of Eden, and THQ's UFC Trainer.

Hasn't MS learned anything from Sony when they released the PS3 at $600?---esp. in this economy? You gotta take a hit, hope it sells, and back it up with great games. If it does well, they'll make their money back in no time. At this rate, good luck trying to get this Kinect off the ground and running.

@DeadMonk28 Well, if I wanted to read only headlines, I would probably be better off reading tabloids. Still, do please ignore the rants of the ill-informed and crass though; most of them are not worth reading, much less replied to in a harsh manner, though informing them of certain matters that they had yet to know is of course a good thing to do. As for Microsoft announcing a firm price, 1Up has << LINK REMOVED >> that such info would not be had until Gamescom in August. The postponement is, as he implied, for the purposes of forecasting and marketing. However, considering << LINK REMOVED >> within Microsoft and its business partners concerning Natal-now-known-as-Kinect, I would take such a statement with several pinches of salt. If you ask me, Microsoft sure is doing a good job of trolling us with placeholder prices such that quite many are hissing and foaming at the mouth and sticking their tongues out so much that they risk dehydration.

Well they wanted you to Pre-order without knowing the final price like you are going to do that? £100 MAX and I would want software with it, for the price they are asking, I would demand that bone chip they removed put back in. You thought they would of learned about cutting corners with the RROD, but alas no. Should of just put out the remodled 360 and put the kinect camera, with the next gen console. That is going to be annouced in a couple of years anyway. The camera would have been cheeper to produce and it would not be a add on.

If they want more preorders then they will have to up the advertising. Nintendo made sure that the whole world was talking about the Wii and it was backed up by a heavy marketing campaign, events, sponsorship, etc. The problems I can see are the fact that the majority of current 360 owners are gamers who aren't really interested in motion control. The non-gaming crowd are being careful with their money right now and to expect them to buy a 360 with Kinect is going to be a very tough sale. Sony seem to have the right idea in that the Move controller seems to be targetted more to the gaming userbase due to its support of some proper gamers games. I guess only time will tell.

Not really surprising. $150 is a pretty expensive leap of faith in these economic conditions. I suspect most consumers will wait for reviews, feedback, and fine-tuning before they even consider opening their wallets. Never mind the fact that most homes already have a Wii which offers a similar service that is cheap, safe, and familiar.

duh, it shouldnt have taken them this long to realize that any periphrial that costs $150 probably wont be scooped up by millions of people, in fact this sounds a bit familiar, hd dvd drive anyone. they should release kinect bundled with the new xbox.

1 of the reasons the uk orders are so low is because that late in the year no-one will be spending hardly anything as the government announced an increase in VAT for january 3rd along with a load of tax increases people will be wary of that. So expensive items like kinect won't be high on the list of things to get, ive heard quite a few people worrying about how much money they're going to have when things change or if they're smart enough they've already worked out how much they're getting shafted by these tax changes so they definatly won't be buying it

I don't get pre-orders this far out. Why would someone want to invest x amount of dollars 4 months before it is released?

Am I crazy or was much of the more promising elements of Kinect (Star Wars, Projact Gotham, Video Chat even Milo last year) seem staged? As in they don't actually work yet, and the demos were all acting...?

well said, BLuFAIc0n and supersonikk seriously, Microsoft. if you want us to buy kinect, you need good launch titles to boot. then you can slap that hefty 150 price tag on us and expect us to look the other way when we go purchase it. Also, make more exclusive IP's. PS3's definitely beat you in that area.

It just go,s to show microsoft trying to cash in again, by holding back on the official price untill the figures for pre-orders have been filed. There for they can charge whatever price they like, as long as pre-orders are high thats what there plan is. Now all they have done is shoot themselves in the foot. By not having a lower confirmed price.

I was gonna get me a 360 slim with Kinect but I seen reviews that it overheats if playing for long time man what kind of crap is that I guess I'll stick with my PS3 and Wii. On weekends I usually run my consoles all day man if 360 can't handle that than forget it I'll wait may they'll fix that problem

Good, I really hope this fails. The kinect looks like the trash I assumed it would look like. Literally everything is casual. Soccer moms playing white river rafting, some bro dancing, etc. I'll be getting the move, begrudgingly, for the same reason I got a wii, light gun shooters. Everything else will likely fail. I really wouldn't get the move either, but the Dead Space LE comes with extraction. I mean how can I pass that up?

yep IMHO Microsoft is way off with the pricing on this... The Playstation Move Camera and Controller pre-order price is £50 - shouldn't they be trying to compete, it's just a perhipheral at the end of the day?

It's funny how everyone was excited for 'Project Natal' until this year's E3. The games really let the technology down, and if it doesn't have good enough launch numbers, then who will want to develop for it? Sorry, I can't see Kinect being a success.

Umm its cause they want 150 for a camera that plays party games... and all we have seen is party games... even from the 3rd party publishers... I want to see them use it to play an FPS then I might start thinking about how it can be used differently. Cause at the moment it simply looks like all it can do is play party games.
