Dutch developer Abstraction Games handling port of top-down action game for Sony platforms; will be Cross-Buy title.

Hotline Miami is coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita this spring, developer Dennaton Games and publisher Devolver Digital announced today. Dutch developer Abstraction Games will port the game to its new platforms under the guidance of Dennaton Games.

No Caption Provided

The game will launch as a Cross-Buy title for PS3 and PS Vita, allowing users to play it on both platforms with one purchase. Other Cross-Buy titles include PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault.

Hotline Miami for PC sold over 300,000 units and was pirated at "extraordinary levels." A sequel is in development.

I just bought this game the other day, the soundtrack is brilliant. The art style is great and shows a surprising amount of detail for what they have to work with. This is the first game in a long time that I have downloaded and put the soundtrack on my phone. I love what they have done here, this game has so much character.

This is exactly what Vita needs - more indie/arcade games for Vita. I do not care for AAA console game ports or spin offs for Vita. I will by Vita the moment Mark of the Ninja, Renegade Ops, Kill Team or any similar game will be available.

PS! Sony - make Vita a lucrative development platform for small developers. I would love to see some DoubleFine's smaller games on Vita.

The game is amazing. I will most likely buy it again once it comes out. Playing this on the go would be amazing, and who can argue against Cross-Buy? Best idea in a while from a console company.

@Geminon Are you sure? Or are you mistaking it with Retro City Rampage?

If that's the case, let me tell you that the only things both games share is the pixelated retro graphics and the violence. Hotline Miami is a MUCH superior game. Retro City is just retro gamer fan service and doesn't stand on its own beyond constant nostalgic references. Hotline Miami is its own beast, with gameplay that has no parallel in ANY era. The retro look is just a means to an end.

@debryson The game runs on any controller not just the 360 controller specifically. The 360 controller is also natively supported for PC outside from the actual Xbox 360.

@debryson Message Microsoft. I'm pretty sure it would be a smash hit on XBLA. But Microsoft has to be interested in publishing it. Don't ask here or the developers, demand it to the ones with the power to actually publish it. I'll bet my whole game collection that the PSN port is happening because Sony guys approached the devs after seeing the game's critical acclaim in 2012.

5 years ago, a friend from college who was a terrible programmer made a game similar to this because it was all he was capable of programming. When did beginners programming tutorials become award winning games?

@metroidhunterx Someone with little programming knowledge can make a platforming game, that doesn't make it Super Mario Brothers.

Programming and game design are not the same things.

This is a great game and deserves any awards it gets.

@Toysoldier34 @metroidhunterx You've misinterpreted my point, so I'll simplify it.

Little effort was put into the design and development, as it is a copy/pasted tutorial labeled as a commercial game rather than a best effort from an independent developer. It's interesting that you say anyone can program a platform game, but that doesn't make it Super Mario Bros. Hotline Miami is similarly what one should consider a poor attempt at re-creating already existing, much better games in a top-down environment.

@Toysoldier34 A game's complexity in code is not the determining factor in what makes a game great or not. You might want to re-think what you wrote as it makes absolutely no sense to judge a game by that.

Just beat this last night with all the puzzle pieces and it was one of the fun I've had with a game under $10 in quite a while. I'll definitely give these cats more of my dough when this hits the PS3 and I encourage others to do so as well.

@Memories0fBlood Same here. Even if it isn't cross-buy I'll get it again on the Vita since it seems to fit that console better. I'm also expecting the port to have better controls than the PC version - none of the control schemes there was ideal and wholly intuitive.

@firehawk998 I wish there was an Indie Game College somewhere with postgraduated teachers who would make all freshman play Hotline Miami, slap them in the face twice and yell "NO, NOT A FUCKING DERIVATIVE 2D PLATFORMER YOU COCKSUCKER! LOOK! THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE! RETRO LOOK, YES, BUT ***NEW GAMEPLAY***!"

@Grovilis I have played the game many times on PC both using mouse and keyboard and a PS3 controller and the game was fine with both. I prefer the mouse and keyboard but I wasn't extremely hindered with a controller. My main problem was that it would register a button press twice in one press. So when I used a trigger to pick up a weapon it would sometimes throw the weapon as I picked it up, though that could be more refined easily.

One advantage tot he controller especially for non PC gamers is the ability to hold the joystick in one direction and know that you will attack in that direction as the mouse cursor can get lost in lots of action.

Though when using guns it is harder to be accurate because you cannot simply put the cursor over an enemy and shoot.

@Grovilis It works at least as well with the controller as with the mouse/keyboard, just with different strengths. I mean, actually none of the schemes is ideal. M/k seems better at aiming (no surprise there) but controller makes movement easier, which is crucial in a game where you may need to move very swiftly not to die at the last moment in your Nth attempt. I ended up playing to completion on the controller as I tried to avoid using guns most of the time anyway (they're noisy and all, as we know).

If the Vita/PSN version manages to somehow change how aiming/targeting is done and achieve a solution that's more intuitive than just trying to point to a general direction, it will outstrip both control schemes on the PC version by a mile. It can't just reproduce the Xbox controller scheme anyway as this scheme uses the R3 button to lock on targets, and the Vita sticks are not "pressable". Let's see how it comes out.

@Grovilis Gamepad support was added to the PC version and it actually controls extremely well that way. I was pleasantly surprised. It will be great on the Vita and PS3.

I actually played through the whole thing on PC with a PS3 pad, and it works really well - kind of like the PS1 / PS2 ports of Smash TV, or Geometry Wars. The only issues I found were that the keybindings were a little dodgy and that it caused horrible slowdown after a couple of levels, both PC-specific issues really.

"pirated at exordianry levels" when will this nonsense stop. Have you idiots SEEN a torret tracker? in the last 5 years the 360 has had EVERY game uploaded there weeks in advance of other systems. Console piracy is MASSIVE

@highlanderjimd Correction: ****Xbox 360**** piracy is massive.

The PS3 can be cracked now, but constant system updates made the whole process way more complicated and involved after time, and piracy in the console doesn't reach 10% of the levels seen on the PC or the Xbox. And that's despite both consoles having basically the same user base size.

If most torrent sites and hackers/crackers were based in the US you could say the piracy levels are biased, but that's not the case. The truth of the matter is that the Xbox is WAY easier to crack.

@highlanderjimd the thing is, the developer applauded the pirating, but hated because he did not get paid. i have never pirated a game, but i have a cd (and bought them later) but for many developers, they have said pirating has helped spark the popularity of the games. hell, i played starcraft on a pirated disc, and i am still looking for a legit copy because i LOVE that game.
