GameSpot Editors' Top 10 Lists

It's a personal choice.

So far, you've seen all of our official choices for 2013's best games according to platform categories. But before we unveil the one game that we've chosen as our overall GameSpot Game of the Year (that's happening on December 19), we're asking all of our editors to list their personal favorites for 2013.* After all, GameSpot isn't a hive mind, and our editors aren't working in a Borg-like collective. We're actually a bunch of individuals with our own personal tastes and opinions, some of which differ wildly from one another. So come check out what our editors have chosen as their individual top 10 games for the year. You may be surprised at some of the choices.

*For personal top 10s, GameSpot editors were able to choose any game that had a release in 2013--this includes games that were released on different platforms this year but that were initially made available at some other, earlier time (such as Spelunky). This was less strict than our criteria for the official Game of the Year awards, which dictated that only games that were first released between January and the end of November 2013 were eligible.

I like seeing the editors' picks but, honestly, I'm really missing the genre awards. I know it's rough sometimes figuring out what games fit in what genres but that's where you really get to compare apples against apples. Well, OK, at least your comparing citrus to citrus anyway.

Yet one more person to shamelessly plant one's own top ten in a publicly viewable page with high traffic. :P

I have no problem with that either - I just happen to have the whim to poke. ;)

But the latter kind - those I would poke - HARD. >:D

Just came from Good Old Games. Da cheapness is too much. I am going to get the Indies mentioned in these lists. 5 bucks for Spelunky and 1€ for my GOTY: System Shock 2. (hey first time playing it)

P.S. If you're poking around on GOG, look up Sacrifice. Great fun. There's an excellent guide to the game somewhere in the deep sub-basements here at Gamespot, too.

If you do pick up Sacrifice, do be warned that your usual imagination of fantastical creatures would be greatly challenged by that game.

It's one of my favorite games of the year, but not my favorite; it had two important disappointing aspects to me, but with that said, I already have it on PS3, and I just bought it again on 360... The game I'm talking about is Bioshock Infinite. It was fourteen dollars, and unlike the PS3 version, supports Dolby Digital, so I'm glad about that.

Just so for anyone that happens to having some cynical thoughts about these lists appearing, you may want to be reminded that in recent years, some "concerned" people had been demanding more from the staffers about what goes into the decisions for their division-endorsed "Game of The Year" awards. These demands were made with the usual excuses of "demanding transparency" and such of course.

The lists are more than likely intended to show that the decisions were made with common ground among their personal preferences.

Of course, if you want to scoff at the lists anyway and write them off as the egotistical expressions of persons who exploit their editorial positions to publish their "biased preferences", go ahead - just don't be caught making a "Top Ten" list yourself and publishing it anywhere publicly viewable. ;)

Is there a legit reason why there is no list from Johnny? Is he just a TV personality with no gaming credibility?

Wow, I'm really surprised that not a single editor listed anywhere in their top 10's (on top of it not being nominated for PC GotY) Europa Universalis 4. Especially considering it's been getting lauded as the best strategy game of the year and even got a 9 here on Gamespot.

Where's the complex strategy game love Gamespot?

Hey, I like complex stuff too - but I, for one, happen to realize that complex strategy games are not for everyone and are very, very niche.

@BuBsay

I am not bewildered. There had been plenty of other games with higher profile than Europa Universalis IV. :/

By the way, if I recall, it was Daniel Shannon who reviewed it for GameSpot - he's not a staffer, much less an editor. (He is a freelancer by the way.)

<< LINK REMOVED >>I kinda feel the same way. Granted, I haven't played a good chunk of the games the editors here have played, but at the same time I can tell how much more niche my gaming tastes are compared to theirs. Many of their picks (like Infinite or Tomb Raider, for example) were okay, but didn't really capture me. Heck, I'm not sure I could really pick 10 new games I absolutely loved enough to be worth a 'top ten'. I've been spending too much time playing older games.

Going by these lists it's gonna be between Last of Us and Zelda (would've also included GTA V but it already lost to LoU on PS3).

Anyway, I loved this new feature of personal lists from the editors, if the idea was to drop the Special Achievement awards in favor of this, I'm ok with it. I do miss the special achievement awards, but this was actually more interesting and entertaining to read (imo). Certainly WAY more interesting than the platform awards... :/

Legitimately surprised at the exclusion of Pikmin 3. I absolutely loved that game, and I still play the multiplayer.

Props to Jess for The Swapper though, that game is rad.

I'm kind of surprised/disappointed that Europa Universalis IV didn't get a nod on anyone's top 10 list for the year.

Admittedly, it is a grand strategy game, but it is/was very very good.

I haven't gotten to play every 2013 game I've wanted to play yet, but this would probably be my top 5 as of right now:

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

4. Pokemon X/Y

3. Fire Emblem: Awakening

2. BioShock Infinite

1. The Last of Us

What about games from December? Or are they included for "next year's" games? And what about December of last year?

I like seeing the variety of opinions. From this side, it can sometimes seem like GameSpot folks are all gushing over the same set of games, but that obviously isn't true. It's looking like a real battle for GOTY between Link and TLOU.

I can only assume that Mark and Randolph were the only ones to play Rayman Legends. Amazed that it's not on the vast majority of top ten lists. Top five easily for me.

Curiously, everyone seemed to like the games that sold the most. Hence why they sold the most. Not to mention all the great reviews they got on many a website. Curious thing that.

Only Jess included 'The Swapper' though. She wins the competition.
