Game Of Thrones Creator Says A Spinoff May Happen

"I think HBO might well do one."

For a while now, it's been known that HBO is exploring the possibility of a Game of Thrones spinoff. In January, HBO executive Casey Bloys said the company would be foolish not to think about it. Now, series co-creator David Benioff has suggested that the likelihood of a spinoff happening is strong.

"We all had dinner last night, and we were all saying we should go do different things," Benioff said, as reported by BuzzFeed (via GamesRadar). "The characters who maybe will survive--there's always going to be this temptation to keep doing it… to do the spinoff show or do the sequel show and everything. And I think HBO might well do one."

Now Playing: Game of Thrones - Season 7 Teaser Trailer

He added that he would be excited to watch a Game of Thrones spinoff, which he said could be "great." Given his previous comments, it's unlikely that he would be involved, though he does have some ideas.

"I think it's better for them to get new blood in with new visions," Benioff said, potentially referencing new behind-the-scenes talent.

Last year, Benioff and DB Weiss, the Game of Thrones creators, said the world of Westeros is ripe with storytelling opportunities.

"One of the great things about what [George R.R. Martin] did is he didn't just build a story; he built a world with so many characters and such a rich, detailed history behind it," the pair explained at the time. "There are a lot of different ways you could go with it; we just really haven't had time to really think through the details of it because we're so focused on getting the show made."

Benioff said last September that he and Weiss are going to walk away from Game of Thrones after Season 8.

Season 7, which contains seven episodes, premieres on July 16. The eighth and final season will contain six episodes, though there is no word yet on when they will air.

In other news, it's been revealed that Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has a cameo in Season 7, as does singer Ed Sheeran and MLB pitcher Noah Syndergaard.
