First No Man's Sky Update Detailed, Early Copy Players Recommended to Delete Saves

Hello Games says early players need to delete saves before installing or miss out on features.

No Man's Sky developer Hello Games has revealed what the game's first patch will include. Posting on the game's official website, studio founder Sean Murray said anyone who played the game prior to installing this patch will need to delete their save. Although the game will continue to function without the patch, these players will "miss out on new content and experiences" if they don't update.

"We highly recommend deleting your save if you have played before updating your game (we won’t do this in future, but it’s a day zero update)," the post says.

Now Playing: GS News Update: No Man's Sky Day One Update Detailed!

According to Murray, servers will be wiped on Sunday (August 7) and then again on Monday (August 8). The update will be available on Monday (August 9) for reviewers once it exits submission. The general public playing on PC and PS4 will be able to download and patch their game at launch.

It looks like Hello Games has introduced a number of new features to the game, including three paths players can follow, changes to the way terrain generation works, and tweaked combat mechanics. Additionally, the size of the game's galaxies are now ten times larger. The exploit that allowed early players to complete the game in around 30 hours has also been removed.

Looking ahead, Murray said Hello Games is working on introducing "the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters."

He added: "Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually. This universe we’ve built is a pretty large canvas, we’ve got a lot of ideas. This is the type of game we want to be."

Here's the full patch notes, courtesy of Hello Games.

Beware these notes contain some spoilers.

  • The Three Paths--there are now new, unique "paths" you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience.
  • The Universe--we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.
  • Diversity--Creatures are now more diverse in terms of ecology and densities on planets.
  • Planets--we've added dead moons, low atmosphere and extreme hazardous planets. Extreme hazards include blizzards and dust storms.
  • Atmosphere--space, night time and day skies are now 4x more varied due to new atmospheric system, which refracts light more accurately to allow for more intense sunsets.
  • Planet rotation--play testing has made it obvious people are struggling to adjust to this during play so its effects have been reduced further.
  • Terrain generation--caves up to 128m tall are now possible. Geometric anomalies have been added. Underwater erosion now leads to more interesting sea beds.
  • Ship diversity--a wider variety of ships appear per star system, and are available to purchase. Cargo and installed technology now vary more, and ships have more unique attributes.
  • Inventory--ship inventories now store five times more resources per slot. Suit inventories now store 2.5 times more per slot. This encourages exploration and gives freedom from the beginning. We're probably going to increase this even further in the next update, for people in the latter game phases, and will allow greater trading potential.
  • Trading--trading is deeper. Star systems and planets each have their own wants and needs, based off a galactic economy. Observing these is the key to successful trading. We still working on adjusting this based on how everyone plays, but all trading values have been re-balanced across the galaxy, giving a greater depth. A bunch of trade exploits were uncovered and have been removed
  • Feeding--creatures now have their own diet, based on planet and climate. Feeding them correctly will yield different results per species, such as mining for you, protecting the player, becoming pets, alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources.
  • Survival--recharging hazard protection requires rare resources, making shielding shards useful again. Storms can be deadly. Hazard protection and suit upgrades have been added. Liquids are often more dangerous.
  • Graphical effects--Lighting and texture resolution have been improved. Shadow quality has doubled. Temporal AA didn’t make it in time, but it's so close.
  • Balancing--several hundred upgrades have had stat changes (mainly exo-suit and ship, but also weapon), new upgrades have been added.
  • Combat--Auto Aim and weapon aim has been completely rewritten to feel more gentle in general, but stickier when you need it. Sentinels now alert each other, if they haven't been dealt with quickly. Quad and Walker AI is now much more challenging, even I struggle with them without a powered up weapon.
  • Space Combat--advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.
  • Exploits--infinite warp cell exploit and rare goods trading exploit among other removed. People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can't stop themselves.
  • Stability--foundations for buildings on super large planets. Resolved several low repro crashes, in particular when player warped further than 256 light years in one session (was only possible due to warp cell exploit above).
  • Space Stations--interiors are now more varied, bars, trade rooms and hydroponic labs have been added.
  • Networking--Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision. Star systems discovered by other players appear during Galactic Map flight.
  • Ship scanning--scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans.
  • Flying over terrain--pop-in and shadow artifacts have been reduced. Generation speed has been increased two fold (planets with large bodies of water will be targeted in next update)
  • Writing--The Atlas path has been rewritten by James Swallow (writer on Deus Ex) and me. I think it speaks to the over-arching theme of player freedom more clearly now. Early mission text has been rewritten to allow for multiple endings.

No Man's Sky's release date has been confirmed as August 9 for PS4 and August 12 for PC. One person managed to get a leaked copy of No Man's Sky and claims to have "beaten" the game in about 35 hours.

Basically...keep your saves and avoid our update and it'll be possible to beat the game in 30hrs. Accept the patch and your chances of reaching the center of the universe will be nearly impossible lol

Save the update please xD

@ShadowStyleB: I did, but I don't think you did. The update eliminates the "exploit" that allows gamers to complete the game in 30 hours...does it not? Alrighty then lol So wtf are you talking about?

@louixiii: LOL. You said it would be impossible to reach the center. It isn't impossible just going to take longer than those that got it early and got to the center. Now if you meant it will be impossible to do it in 30 then yes you are correct but that isn't how your post is worded.

@ShadowStyleB: Okay...since you didn't know was purposely over exaggerating, this means that it's probably going to take closer to 300 hrs to complete the game's main objective. With my work schedule, it'll take forever and a day and I don't want to play a game that takes forever to complete which is why I'll pass. 30...I can deal with. 300...that's a movie lol

Sounds like they rewrote huge elements of the game at the last minute...that seems odd and unsettling, but I cant help but admit the updates all sound good.

@zerohournow: the game gone gold on july 7th. They have like a month to update the game. Most of these were just the features that wasnt ready in time for the print.

@zerohournow: It's not like Skyrim or Bioshock where features have to be built by hand for months or years on end. Everything in the game is built in layers that is tweaked until it fits into the rest of the system.

@pongley: BS. It's an open world game any element can hugely impact the game and must be tested properly. Last minute changes like these can have terrible impact in the game.

So if I'm reading this right, they are getting rid of the exploit that allowed the leakers to reach the center of the galaxy in 30 hrs. and increasing galaxy size by up to 10x? That means conservatively it will probably now take 50-60 hours to reach the center? That's awesome! Hopefully they will keep doing large free updates like this for a while. I haven't pre-ordered for PC yet, but I think that's what I will be doing tonight!

@MarcRecon: Like most devs don't patch exploits? They just got the benefit of leakers showing it to them BEFORE launch rather than hearing about it after. It's clearly not just for that though or did you not read the patch notes?

@jayskoon93: There is plenty of gameplay on youtube now. It's pretty cool. You can even upgrade weapons to deform/blast holes in the landscape to create shelters and tunnels and there are underground cave systems you can explore for miles on some planets.

You can even explore space stations on foot and meet aliens to talk to/trade with , learn languages(The better you get at learning words of their language , the better your conversations will go) albeit slowly by finding monoliths on planet surfaces which unlock 1 word of their language.

The game reminds me alot of the freedom of those early games in that you to do what you want such as Mercenary.

I watched the live stream on youtube yesterday and today...my eyes nearly fell out...what an amazing piece of work there. The guy flies to a star system, chooses a planet, lands, finds some strange structure from unknown origins with a sealed entrance, he uses weapons to gain access, security systems come online, he goes in, takes precious resources, gets into ship, takes off into space, barely out of space things are so silent and peaceful again, until all kinds of alarms ring and player is interdicted by pirate ships that want to take the precious loot, player barely survives the attack, searches for closest space station, lands, refines resources, uses it to add enhancements on ship WHICH CHANGE HOW SHIP LOOKS, he takes off to a moon of that planet, moon is full of life, he discovers peaceful and aggressive creatures, names them, takes resources, beautiful scenery all together, he spends a good amount of time there, takes off again, flies to a more distant planet, witnesses a massive battle between pirates and traders, chooses to help traders, gets great experience and reputation gains, lands at the trading station....then continues to explore planets, create new ships, finds black holes, every place completely different than the other, so much to do in so many places.... And that sound man, coming at the right time with the right music !!! I pre-ordered it immediately, loved what I saw, NOTHING out there that is the same, totally innovative game, the first of its kind.

@phili878: Yes , it's quite amazing. The only thing i haven't seen as yet is if the PC version has as much graphical pop in as the PS4. It can be jarring in some locations where you see animals and some landscape suddenly fade in but it may not be like that on the PC. Who knows?

I don't have a copy , i am just going by what has been shown so far.

However for everything it offers it's hard to say it's too expensive to try out anyway. What is 60 bux or so for infinite freedom to explore.

@deviltaz35: that is probably a rendering issue based on CD/Disc type games that require a lot of graphics to load. That is a performance issue. For instance, Xenoblade Chronicles X for Wii U...Disc/CD version is similar, but additional data packs were made available by monolith/nintendo to download (like 5 Gigs !!), in order to make that disappear. I therefore recommend, since it is small in size, for PS4 users, if they are able to, to download the full version and not play it off a disc. Then again, we get used to it so even for disc users, no stress. Also, who knows, maybe the same will happen on PC, too bad we have not seen much there yet.

@gotrekfabian: It's much tougher to play though due the physics. No Man's sky is deliberately made to be fun and engaging and not having you need to train for a ship licence in order to get anywhere :).

Love Elite, but sometimes you just want to chill out and relax and explore.

Hello Games says "People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can't stop themselves."

I say that someone from HG should secretly thank the guy that paid $1000 to play early and found those exploits. Had they not been found out until after release, we'd all be reading the article titled "No Man's Sky Broken" by this time next week. The only thing I can compare it to is Destiny bugs that people were using, and gaming sites were posting articles on how to do it while also warning you that Bungie would be fixing the problem soon so get it while you can.

PS4 or PC? My concern with the PS4 version is how much pop in there will be....... Draw distance is important to me, especially in a game like this.

@whatsazerg: PC version may or may not have the same pop-in.

I think it has less to do with pushing the PS4's hardware limits, and more with how the game's algorithms can only generate things within a certain distance of the player, or can only generate things at a certain speed as the player moves. If you're quickly flying over the surface of a planet, the edge of the generated world has to "catch up" with you.

A good example is that this happens in Minecraft, regardless of how fast your PC is.

@Spartan_418: I have no interest in minecraft but i didn't know that thanks :) . Depending on how this turns out this could cause an implosion in overall game sales as people will just keep playing this. We could see a case where no more games are purchased besides this one for at least 6 months :).

I would be very happy if that is the case as way too many games get released in too short a window now. It would be great to actually play something of quality that is to a certain extent infinite. Love the idea just hope the execution pays off.

@whatsazerg: I wish I had pre-ordered on PC to be honest. I pre-ordered NMS before I got a new gaming PC, then realized how much better PC gaming is (after decades of console gaming). I get pretty bad controller latency regardless of the TV I am using. Some games are worse than others (especially competitive online games), but it is consistent in every game. I have had two different PS4s to fix this issue and it has not. For beauty, I am sure you already know the answer. After seeing 70+fps, I have a hard time going back (but I have noticed no noticeable difference between 70-ish and 80, 90, 100). If I could get a refund and pick it up on PC I would do so in a heart beat.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Are you going to use the ship you get with the preorder to get a head start or are you going to play it the slow way :) . Just curious.

I have never really had this much interest in a game for as long as i can remember. Was watching an hour of it on the phone last night when i should have been asleep. It is sort of mesmerising all that exploration yet the graphics actually look quite good despite the scale of the game.

Yet i still haven't preordered it as i don't know whether to get it for PS4 or PC or both.

@deviltaz35: I don't really no what I am going do it.

That being said with these types of games I usually get very OCD and it ends up taking me a long time to move forward.

Fallout 4 for example... Every new settlement I found I ended up scrapping ever little piece I could in the area that was marked. So I'd imagine I would end up looking around each planet I land on for a awkward amount of time more than the average person.

I hope its good, because they hype is off the scale... I only pre-ordered im going to buy it day one anyway so may as well get the pre-order bonus.

I recommend managing your expectations though... This game REEKS of grinding for hours for no reason what so ever.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Fair enough and you may have a point about grinding :) . At least now there is a bar on space stations.
