Earlier this year, Nintendo asked fans what characters they most wanted to see in the next Smash Bros., and it looks like the votes are in: Cloud from Final Fantasy VII is the game's latest confirmed fighter.

During a Nintendo Direct presentation today, Nintendo not only revealed the character, but also showed off his moves, limit breaks, and a new stage based on Final Fantasy VII's Midgar area.

Cloud will come with different costumes that reflect character design changes through both the games and movies featuring him. However, it's not clear if there will be a design based on his blocky, original PS1 appearance.

The Midgar stage that he brings with him features a massive Mako reactor in the background. And, similar to Smash's Pokemon stages, the stage will feature cameos from Final Fantasy VII's summons that will wreak havoc on the players.

The announcement is notable because it also means that, eventually, Nintendo will make a Cloud Amiibo.

In addition, new Final Fantasy-themed costumes modeled after the series' Chocobo character are coming to the game.

The last character revealed for Super Smash Bros. was Ryu from the Street Fighter series, another longtime crossover favorite.

While today's Nintendo Direct featured a lot of new info, you'll be able to get an even deeper dive next month. The next Smash Bros.-focused Direct is scheduled for December.
