Dragon Age golden, hitting PS3 Nov. 3

BioWare's dark fantasy RPG marches on factory; Sony edition to launch alongside its PC, 360 brethren in North America, but will still trail in EU.

Over five years after it was first announced, Dragon Age Origins has gone gold. Today's announcement came over a year after Electronic Arts dated the role-playing game for the first quarter of 2009. It was subsequently delayed until October 20 before being pushed back yet again to November 3 on the PC and Xbox 360.

Dragon Age: Origins is working its magic in the factory.
Dragon Age: Origins is working its magic in the factory.

With an ambiguous "November launch" window, the PlayStation 3 version of Dragon Age was set to trail the other versions. However, today in a live chat session held by Sony this morning, BioWare cofounder and EA role-playing game chief Ray Muzyka announced that the PS3 edition would launch alongside its 360 and PC siblings on November 3. Muzyka also confirmed the game's PlayStation Trophies would correspond to the Xbox Live achievements found in the 360 version.

Unfortunately for European gamers, BioWare still plans on releasing the PS3 edition of Dragon Age: Origins after the PC and 360 versions launch November 6. "[We're] still working on the EU release timing for PS3," said Muzyka. "We'll have an announcement on that shortly--[it's] still planned for some time a bit later in November."

Dragon Age: Origins is described by BioWare as a "dark heroic fantasy role-playing game." It will be rated M for Mature for language, partial nudity, sexual content, intense violence and blood, although Muzyka said the gore can be toned down by the viscera-adverse.

Billed as a spiritual successor to the classic Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins will be jam-packed with BioWare's signature plot-altering choices and moral shades of gray. It will offer players six origin stories based on their character's social station and race: dwarf noble, dwarf commoner, city elf, Dalish elf, human noble, or mage. Those separate stories will tie into a larger narrative about the Grey Wardens, a mysterious order of knights guarding civilization from an ancient evil. The game will feature 60 to 80 hours of gameplay, with the first installment in two years of downloadable content expansions available at launch.

In terms of gameplay, Dragon Age: Origins will let players control four party members at a time to take advantage of their various melee, ranged, and magic combat abilities. For details on how combat works, check out GameSpot's latest preview of the game.

Can't wait to play it! Then we shall see if it is truly a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate.

I still won't be getting the PS3 version. I will stick with the PC or 360 version. Mainly because this company does not have a history of developing games for the PS3. They have made numerous games for the PC and 360.

Well, hooray for PS3 owners. Nice to see a company put in some overtime to fix an inequity between the consoles. (Hopefully it is fully ready on launch day.) This news is a great counter to all the third party exclusive crap that just leads to screaming fanboys on all sides.

I wanted to get the collectors edition, but they aren't taking pre-orders for it anymore. Maybe I can get it at Best Buy or Fry's Electronics. I'm going to try both places on Nov 3rd. At least I'll get to play Forza 3 next week. That's something to look forward to.

I just hope it runs well. Bioware makes great games but they tend to suffer from frame rate issues.

I am so happy about this. I was really worried since it released the same week as ACII and that would overwhelm a casual gamer such as myself.

@joelgau I agree with you 100%. Comparing Dragon Age with Demon's Souls is like comparing Diablo to Baldur's Gate. Great games both, and both are RPGs, but entirely different beasts... Personally, I'm stoked for Dragon Age. The Baldur's Gate series was one of my most favorite RPG franchise ever, and to date the one that really did D&D justice imo. I'm glad to see Bioware make their return to their fantasy roots...

Gamespot showed how the game would play on the PS3. They had an "On the Spot" video this week about this. It looks like it runs smoothly and has nice graphics. Demon's Souls is awesome but this is a different game. It is like apples and oranges. Get both and you won't be disappointed.

This is great news. Just hope it doesn't turn out like the PS3 version of Borderlands. I'll just give it a week at least anyway

I hope it won't suck! Damn! I thought I'll have more chance to check if DAO doesn't live up to its hype or not. Never mind, I live in EU so it might be released in 20th November as like it was before. I'll check the review and ask people in NA about the PS3 version first so that I could decide whether or not to cancel my pre-order of the game. :( Come to think of it, I still profit. I have a lot of games I have yet played so I could kill some time before DAO arrives. :P

Magic my foot... probably the same way Bethesda speeds up PS3 development: by rushing out a half-assed port. Regardless, with them inflating the price of the game by selling pieces of it separately on launch day, I'll just stick with Demon's Souls... which is probably a far better game to begin with, if Mass Effect was any indication.
