Dragon Age golden, hitting PS3 Nov. 3

BioWare's dark fantasy RPG marches on factory; Sony edition to launch alongside its PC, 360 brethren in North America, but will still trail in EU.

Over five years after it was first announced, Dragon Age Origins has gone gold. Today's announcement came over a year after Electronic Arts dated the role-playing game for the first quarter of 2009. It was subsequently delayed until October 20 before being pushed back yet again to November 3 on the PC and Xbox 360.

Dragon Age: Origins is working its magic in the factory.
Dragon Age: Origins is working its magic in the factory.

With an ambiguous "November launch" window, the PlayStation 3 version of Dragon Age was set to trail the other versions. However, today in a live chat session held by Sony this morning, BioWare cofounder and EA role-playing game chief Ray Muzyka announced that the PS3 edition would launch alongside its 360 and PC siblings on November 3. Muzyka also confirmed the game's PlayStation Trophies would correspond to the Xbox Live achievements found in the 360 version.

Unfortunately for European gamers, BioWare still plans on releasing the PS3 edition of Dragon Age: Origins after the PC and 360 versions launch November 6. "[We're] still working on the EU release timing for PS3," said Muzyka. "We'll have an announcement on that shortly--[it's] still planned for some time a bit later in November."

Dragon Age: Origins is described by BioWare as a "dark heroic fantasy role-playing game." It will be rated M for Mature for language, partial nudity, sexual content, intense violence and blood, although Muzyka said the gore can be toned down by the viscera-adverse.

Billed as a spiritual successor to the classic Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins will be jam-packed with BioWare's signature plot-altering choices and moral shades of gray. It will offer players six origin stories based on their character's social station and race: dwarf noble, dwarf commoner, city elf, Dalish elf, human noble, or mage. Those separate stories will tie into a larger narrative about the Grey Wardens, a mysterious order of knights guarding civilization from an ancient evil. The game will feature 60 to 80 hours of gameplay, with the first installment in two years of downloadable content expansions available at launch.

In terms of gameplay, Dragon Age: Origins will let players control four party members at a time to take advantage of their various melee, ranged, and magic combat abilities. For details on how combat works, check out GameSpot's latest preview of the game.

Can't wait for the PC release. Hopefully it will be almost perfectly optimized since we were delayed so long! :P

It will be interesting to see just how it all plays out. There has been a lot of hype directed towards this game and it has a lot to live up to when comparing it to Baldur's Gate. Just two weeks to go.

@ Humorguy_basic umm not exactly. Though it is true that the game was almost finished on the PC earlier this year, Bioware said that they would still like to make some improvements in the game. Though it is true that the game was delayed in order to be released alongside the console versions bioware stated that they added 70+ quests over the time of delay. 70+ QUESTS! imagine how many hours of gameplay that adds, plus they had A LOT of time to polish and refine the game, something that seems to be lacking in the gaming industry now-a-days

Lets just hope that the PS3 version of Dragon Age is better than the PS3 version of Fallout. \ \ I will be getting it for 360 but it is better for everyone that it gets launched on all platforms on the same day.

Seems Gamespot care more about the PS3 being delayed by about 3 weeks than back in March when it it was announced the 'finished' PC version would be delayed SIX MONTHS!!!! Every day now, I see Gamespot articles treating PC gamers as second class citizens!

I'd think I'd buy the PC version before even considering the PS3. Remember this is a PC developed game (done in April) that's been ported to the 360 and PS3. Its obvious where it's going to play the best...

Why are Dragon Age and Demon's Souls even being compared? That's stupid! It's like comparing Diablo and Baldur's Gate; Call of Duty and GTAIV; Supreme Commander and Pikmin! Seriously, if you're thinking "lololool X is teh better rpg!!!1" you fail.

I am still quite underwhelmed by the actual in-game footage that I am seeing. While the pre-rendered cutscenes are gorgeous and artful, the actual in-game graphics and presentation seems to be lacking for a 2009 video game, especially one of this magnitude. As much as I anticipate this game, I am reserving judgment until its November 3 release. As you know if you have been following my posts on Gamespot, that I am single, middle-aged man living in my own residence. I have money, security, comfort, stability, anything a man physically needs, except for friends. It's such a lonesome life, and I turn to video games to ease my pain. I look forward to a wife that will never come.

guys what the hell?!?! keep your opnions for your self. Demon souls is a really great exclusive for the Ps3, and i find it stupid to compare it to dragon age because DS is a hardhardcore game and dragon age is a RPG @Vasot if you dont like demon souls others do @sick09 thats your opnion and it works better for you, i respect your opnion but i might lose respect to you if you think youtr opnion is World-wide

@Anshanlord I have Demon's Souls and I can't stop playing it. I also have Dragon Age Origins on pre-order as well. In my neighborhood though, no one has Demon's Souls as an option to rent. It is harder than anything I've seen released in recent memory though. But nothing as hard as some make it sound to be. But as to which to get first is a tough call. I don't believe either have a demo to play anyways so, I would say which ever game has even the slightest bit more interest from you is the one to get first. @Vasot How is Demon's Souls not a real RPG? What is it that you don't like about it?

Games like Dragons Age are best played with a PC. PC provides better graphics from the consoles and a mouse is a better option from a gamepad @anshanlord...forget demons souls it is not a real rpg anyway and it is overhyped by the fanboys. Keep your money for Dragon age :)

Yeah, definitely looking forward to this one! Baldur's Gate was a fantastic series and this one is looking good. Neverwinter Nights was also pretty good, though, as other mentioned, sort of static and cut-and-paste.

I'll get it of course but I'm only cautiously optimistic. If it's anything like Neverwinter Nights' cookie-cutter plot and setting, then I'm done with their fantasy rpgs. I want to adventure in a world, not a movie set.

Sircyrus This game was developed solely for the PC market up until EA bought Bioware. Meaning this was going to be PC exclusive game. When EA bought Bioware they decided to make the game multi platform release. Bioware was getting ready to release this game on toward the beginning of this year for PC but EA decided to hold the game back to be released side by side with its console counterparts. By the way This game has been in development for a very long time for PC I think like 5 years. There is no need to wait for a review dude reserve your copy now I'm telling you. This is going to be the second game I have bought all year due to being very broke. I am getting this game regardless of how much I hate EA. My advice get the PC version If you have nice hardware I am.

@Frostnut Sacred 2 was created around the consoles, not the PC. That's just yet another example of a multiplatform game where the PC ended up with the short stick. Whether the PC gets the shaft again with Dragon Age is yet to be seen, but with the game being held back for the console releases, it can be assumed that it was designed for PC first, then consoles. Meaning it wont be a rushed port on the PC with poor optimization. Also, the isometric view is only on the PC. The consoles will be locked to gameplay more like KOTOR, whereas the PC will have the option of also using the Baldur's Gate style isometric view and tactics. Meaning point+click to move, choose other character, point+click, so it's more tactical controls whereas the consoles will be stuck to one character a time. Whether or not that makes it better is going to depend on someones gameplay preference. No one knows what will be the best version yet, or if one will exist. Anyone who says one is better than the other at this point is talking out of their rear end.

Personally, I don't care if it's the "spiritual successor" to anything. As long as the story blows my mind and the gameplay rocks, I'm happy. :D

Soon we'll know if it deserves to be referred to as "The spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate 2". The emphasis on blood has be concerned, as does the sex and blood Marilyn Manson gameplay video. It seems like they're marketing it to the wrong type of gamer if they've made a game like BG2.

Time for yet another epic journey from BioWare. A game that you know you will get hours upon hours and nearly endless replay value out of instead of beating it in 2-3 days and shelving it. Indeed, it is always quite special when a new BioWare game rolls around and make no mistake, Dragon Age is a behemoth. It is their largest game to date.
