DICE Admits Star Wars Battlefront's Walker Assault Mode Is Unbalanced

"Yeah, it's too tough."

DICE has acknowledged that Star Wars Battlefront's Walker Assault mode is not very well balanced, favoring the Imperials side over the Rebels, and has pledged to address this for the final game.

Writing on Twitter, one fan claimed he never won a Walker Assault match as the Rebel side during the beta. He asked, "Does this mean I suck?" DICE community manager Matthew Everett replied, "Nope! It's a balancing issue within the beta."

Lead multiplayer designer Dennis Brännvall added: "Yeah, it's too tough. We'll make changes based on the feedback and data. Asymmetric modes are tricky and risky but potentially awesome, that's why we want beta test help."

In the 40-player Walker Assault mode, the Rebel side tries to destroy two Empire AT-ATs by securing outposts to call in Y-wing bombers. Empire forces, meanwhile, try to keep the Rebels from activating the command posts. It would appear the Rebels have the tougher job.

DICE has not said how specifically it will change Walker Assault to make it more fair and balanced.

Battlefront's beta ended on October 13; it attracted 9 million players across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, representing the largest beta in EA's history.

In other recent news, EA has announced that Battlefront is getting four expansion packs that you can buy through the game's $50 DLC pass. In addition, three new multiplayer modes have been revealed.

The Battlefront release date is locked in for November 17, about a month before JJ Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens hits theaters. DICE is developing tie-in DLC that will be free for all Battlefront players, but people who preorder will get to play before everyone else.

Did you think Walker Assault was unfair for the Rebel side? Let us know in the comments below.

Um my friend and I one almost every time as the rebels once we figured out how to best build up y-wings and damage the AT-ATs along with how to farm vehicle turrets and where to lay them down so they won't get destroyed. And that was just the two us out of 20.... dice has already said that this will fixed once the game is released because the beta only let you get to lvl 5. At higher levels rebels get to spawn with rocket launchers so if your whole team has rockets card on AT-AT goes down in one y-wing round easy. it should be damn near impossible for rebels to win, go watch the movie. The rebels had to flee because the Empire easily over ran their puny defenses even without an orbital strike due to the shield generator, Game is just gonna be a broken garbage,

"Does this mean I suck?" yes, yes it does.

It was unbalanced, but it wasn't as if it was impossible. I defiantly won as the imperials more than the rebels, but I had my fair share of rebel wins. Plus in the movie the rebels were at a disadvantage it felt authentic.

The spawn system needs reworked most of all. When you only have two people spawning on each other, you have to rely heavily on the other person capability to stay alive or else you've got a hefty run back to the action. On top of that, the generic spawns are placed in areas that are accessible to the other side and can be camped really bad.

I don't think it's very unbalanced. There's just a bit more of a learning curve for the Rebels. I saw the Rebels win quite often and at an increasing rate over the course of the beta as people learned the tricks. First and foremost is to save the orbital strike for when the walker's shields are down. That will take 75% of their hit points. Few people knew this early in the beta. Second, snow speeders can trip up the walkers. I almost took out 2 walkers by myself in a speeder, but I just ran out of time by a second or two.

I thought it was supposed to be a hard battle for the Rebels, Just like in the movie. Isn't that why it was sorta unbalanced in the first place?

The only thing I found a bit grating was having orbital strikes. Is that Rebel Shield Generator just for show? The whole point of it was that the Empire had to walk under it hence the AT-ATs etc. Yes I'm a 45 year old SW geek who bought into ot back in '77.

Those that state it looks rushed obvious haven't played it or already had a negative mindset. As betas go, this was pretty damn stable. Remember Battlefield 4 at the start?

After the first couple of days I started to win as rebels about 30% of the time. Its a challenge, yes, but if stupid CoD addicts aren't playing and the whole team PLAY THE OBJECTIVE you win.

Taking down walkers in the final stage is also pretty easy even with full shields. Simply learn how to fly one of the two snowspeeders available and harpoon the legs, exactly like in the film when they've been hit with the Y-wings. If you get it right its an immediate kill of a walker and you needn't bother shooting it.

Everybody stop moaning, accept the challenge and get on with it. You definately feel a great reward winning as Rebels than Empire in that mode because of it.

At the start of the beta I definitely thought it was too hard for the rebels, but that turned out to be largely because people were still learning the strategy for this game mode, and not playing the objective.

Later I realised that as long as your team plays the uplinks properly there are many ways to take down the AT-AT quickly and easily, e.g. 2 x orbital strikes will kill it from full health, so will 1 successful tow cable, and a few fighters hitting it in strafing runs seriously damage it.

It is too reliant on strong teamwork on the rebel side that's for sure, but small tweaks would do it. IMO reducing the AT-AT health slightly would be good, allowing infantry to do more damage to it, speeding up the Y-Wing launch slightly, and a good one a friend pointed out would be to prevent imperials using the rebel turrets against them, sure destroy them, but using them is a bit OTT.

@Gloridel: I agree, the last five times I played the beta the Rebels won!

As well as what you said, people learned the how to tow cable AT-AT's with the landspeeders which meant the Rebels could have a terrible round, not damaging the walkers at all previously, and still win!

Also people not shooting the walkers when the are invulnerable (which happens a lot for some reason) extends efforts to capture uplinks.

I'm not so sure it would continue being unbalanced as people learn how to play as the rebels.

Whatever happened to the wrapping the legs up with the plane like in the game play trailer? The balancing felt off, but it also feels like it's an objective mode and nobody cares about objectives. They just shoot and get shot.

Well, I wouldn't call it unbalanced, it's just there are different objectives for each side. Imperials simply needed to kick-ass and kill opponents. Rebels, you actually have to do objectives instead of just killing the enemy.

The objectives on Rebels wasn't hard, it was just hardly anyone followed it. At the start anyway, towards the end I got quite a few Rebel wins once it was familiar to people.

Honestly if you think the rebels can not win and the empire has the advantage then just skip to like 4 mins in this video and see how its one sided towards the rebels. If you just play correctly youcan win as the rebels every time. I won more than like 75% of my battles as the rebels https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4-PkkFVkvPE

I think actually, if the rebels worked together, its quite balanced since they should concentrate their fire on the walkers when the walkers are vulnerable, and the rebel fighters should tangle the walker's legs. My team (rebel) almost lost in one match, and they imperials have way better players, almost 50 percent health on both walkers in the last bomber strike. But our team won because everyone concentrated on one walker and another fighter tangled the other walker's legs, giving that true rebel victory.

I think it was great. In the movie the rebels were in a lot of trouble which they should have been. They were beaten back to a frozen planet and spread across the Galaxy. I think it's realistic. If the rebels play the way they are supposed to and accept losses but defend the uplinks and us the resources they have it is very much a possibility to win with teamwork! Loved it.

"DICE has not said how specifically it will change Walker Assault to make it more fair and balanced."

All they have to do is slant it. 25 Rebels/15 Imperials (maybe even 30/10). Imperial hardware is badass; that's the point. That's why the Rebels had to be covert and/or fight the guerrilla numbers game in whatever battle they were in.

I think the mode should just get rid of the space ships. even the A Wings. make them power turrets or something that the rebels have to hold, and the whole time they are 'active' they chip away at the AT-ATs health. the whole you *might* hold these stations and if you do you *might* do some damage with some A Wings is total BS.

How to win as the Imperials: Kill rebels and command the skies; gg

How to win as the Rebels: kill Imperials at spawn locations ( use mountain as cover and advantage point), control the skies and use X-Wing to destroy AT-STs, find an orbital strike and keep till the Y-Wings come in. This will do more than 70% damage. There will always be an orbital strike pick up on the first and third rounds. Use X-Wing and A-Wing ( A-Wing will usually do considerably more damage) on AT-ATs when the time comes. On the second round, camp on the mountain on the outside uplink. Spawn kill imperials coming up from the sides, use A-Wing to kill AT-STs. If doing well, one AT-AT should be dead by the end of the 2nd round and the other should be about half. Finally on the third round, find that orbital strike, wait for the Y-Wings, then win. Or get into a snow speeder. YES! They suk at taking down the Tie Interceptors! Thats why you use the speed boost to fly around the map and dodge, then use the other ability which causes the enemy to be unable to target you! Wow. Very easy to survive now. It's a game of cat N mouse. When Y-Wings come in, slow ur speed, and promptly hit the L1 and R1 buttons to start tow cable. then easily control the R stick to stay in the little box that signifies a correct go around. The box will get smaller every turn around the AT-AT, but there are only 4 turns. EZ WIN GG Best game ever as Rebels.

I was doing this easily every game as Rebels and probably won about 60% to 70% of the time. This mode is in no way any shape or form too hard for the rebels to win. Is it easier for the imperials to win? Yes. Its more simpler. But it is also easy for the Rebels to win. I loved playing Rebels bcuz it was more of a challenge and every win was very rewarding. This game mode could use a few tweaks, but all in all, I say it was a balanced game mode. Thx for reading! :)

Oh, and if u still say the Walker Assault mode is a huge disadvantage to the Rebels, then you were probably the 3 and 30 guy on my team. U R trash. get gud boi.

@twin_oblivions: I finally realized this after playing 5 times as the rebels. I was going like 5-25 and getting mowed down by the imperials. Then I realized I should be doing objectives and started winning as the rebels. However, if the game gets to phase 3 the advantage of the imperial improves significantly even more than before from what I observed because there is no place for the rebels to hide. It is a barren wasteland for the imperials to wreck havoc. It finally felt good figuring out how to win as a the rebels it definitely needs teamwork. Cheers!

It's the largest Beta in EA's history because it was free for anyone to try on the PS4, XBone and PC. None of that pre-order and you get an access code to the Beta shenanigan.

Unbalanced ? I wonder have you guys watch the Empire Strikes Back ? remember there Rebels was Losing and Empire was winning it's realistic so ? You must be the best for making miracles to win as Rebel. They did a casual FPS and then that looks they gonna make the game more shallow

@orhange: Doesn't matter if it was cannon, I mean you never Saw Luke with a Green Lightsaber fighting Vader on the surface of Hoth. If one team has to work harder than the other in order to win, The game isn't fun. It'll lose its longterm appeal really quickly.

Beside if the game didn't have the Star Wars Brand attached to is, you wouldn't be making such a pathetic excuse.

idk, i felt there was a tradeoff. Imperials definitely had tactical advantage, but Rebels could potentially end the match in the first phase if you have 5-6 people who know what they are doing. i would caution them against overbalancing in favor of Rebels in final product... too many times i saw Rebels run past the objective, wasting A-wings by doing attack runs on the AT-ATs the whole time, people sitting there shooting at the AT-ATs with their blasters the whole time (neither does anything unless walker is vulnerable lol), refusing to push out (you respawn in 2 seconds, and most of the objectives are closer to Rebel spawn points; your KDR doesnt matter), wasting Orbital Strikes to kill 1-2 guys instead of saving for walkers (1 orbital strike shaves off like 30% of a walker's health), wasting imploder grenades when AT-AT is about to come vulnerable (if its about time to start damaging the walker, the imploder will do decent damage to it), etc.

my point is this, most rebels, like most imperial teammates, have only played the game for a day or two. this favored imperials because your only objective is deactivate the big icon on your screen and kill people, as opposed to making sure you had a handful of people staying on each objective, a handful of people who knew how to use the 'aircraft' in terms of objective, a handful of people who knew to save orbital strikes for AT-AT, etc. i think once the actual game has been out for a month, you will see Rebels ending the match alot in second and even first phase. hell, by the last day, half of my matches were Rebel victories.

the only thing i will say was a problem was Imperial spawn camping. not only can Imperials go into Rebel spawn, two guys can preemptively go to the next set of objectives and set up a spawn camp there. i'm guilty of doing it, and it keeps rebels off objective for a solid minute, and minutes count in terms of extra Y-wings.

The biggest problems have noticed is the vehicles, this fighters spawn at imperial spawn points, x wings spawn at imperial spawn points, notice the problem here? There are two possible start locations and BOTH have a tai fighter within 20 feet, the X-wing spawns are closer to the Empire spawns than the rebel spawns, and this just get WORSE as the way points start moving back. All the A-wings but ONE spawn BEHIND enemy spawns, so you literally have to get through like 15 imperials to get to them. Then FINALLY when speeders drop, they ate USELESS for anything other than tow cabling AT-ATs. So you have to play keep away with the three+ interceptors for sometimes 5 to 10 minutes and a-wings stop spawning so you have NO backup.

I only played 2 matches in this mode so that's why I didn't experience this issue. The other mode worked just fine though no balance issues with the pod dropping mode which I played around 25 to 30 times.
